I was looking for an inexpensive alternative to carpeting or hardwood flooring. Brown Craft Paper or Brown Bag flooring did the trick!
Thanks for addressing the pet problem. My seniors totally ruined the living room and bedroom carpet, and it was embarrassing to have company. New carpet was out of the question, and wouldn't have lasted long during those years anyway. Glad to see this discussed. You have one of the most thorough tutorials I've seen.
I have been looking for an inexpensive fix for my daughter's room. Her carpet is old and very stained. I was looking at painting the plywood subfloor, but this really looks unique and beautiful. The only problem will be getting her out of the room that long - she LOVES her room. I think we will paint the walls too, before we remove the carpet and tackle the floor project. Thanks for posting this, I never would have imagined a paper bag floor!
I did my master bath less then 2 weeks ago. Ended up giving it about 14 coats of poly. No stain as I didn't wantvit any darker. Next time I won't remove the moldings . Ended up with white specks from the fallen plaster. Due to my OCD, I spent about 4 hours coloring in the flecks with a brown estee lauder brow pencil. When i regained my sanity I decided that the flecks added just another dimension to my already cool floors! On to the office this week!
I am so doing this! What a great inexpensive and beautiful alternative! I have super ugly carpet and have been wanting to tear it out but was waiting to get the money for laminate or wood flooring...going on my 3rd year waiting...so my vacation is in May and this is what I am going to do! Cant wait! Thanks for this :)
Thanks for visiting...the floor is no more slipery than a typical hard wood surface. I have this in my bedroom so there have only been a few small spills. The finish was SUPER glossy when I first did it. I have an 87lb dog who jumps from the bed onto the floor several times a day andthe finish, while less glossy is still in great shape. Oh! and our pup had one or two accidents since we did this and it was so easy to clean up. Good luck!
Having lived with this for a year now, I would say it works best in low traffic areas.
Kind of like a modern ersion of canvas flooring usedvin the 1800s. A smart and ecconomial idea.
wow this looks beautiful !It looks like leather almost ! Great tutorial !Thanks so much !
My brindle girl Crooky 2009-2017 RIP never made a mistake in the house, now my black boy has a few times only because he gets mad when I have to go to the store and leave him alone, never had this problem with him till she passed. Penske 2009-. Love them Greyhounds!
I got the paper in a huge roll at Home Depot. As far as making it look like a whole sheet - it was a real process as you will see in the video. It takes a whole lot of time and patience. Good luck!
looks so good! almost feels like your puppy did u a favor by getting rid of that carpet ;)
Wonderful!! This was the most informative video I’ve seen about these floors yet. Helpful hints about things I wouldn’t have thought of. Much appreciation for your patient, straight forward, thorough theaching!!! Ty
Thank you I appreciate your comment. I wish you the best of luck.
Good for you! It works best in bedrooms. A year later I am noticing the seems cracking a little bit here and there. I have a very big dog (87lbs) who pounces and stretches on it several times a day. If I could do it over I would have taken the time to fill the seams between the plywood that was layed out poorly. Ah well...It will be an inexpensive fix and patches just add to the look.
looks great! but it looks more like marble to me, which is also a good thing. great job!
Thanks so much on both accounts. Teo is the love of our lives : )
Hey Sara. How does the floors look 6 years later?? Im in the middle of reflooring my place and love this idea. Please let me know. Thank you.
Thank you! Your video is the best of all: clear - understandable - practical - and especially without much talk!
EISENKOPF 1954 you are very welcome
I have Greyhounds as well. I have had about 80 fosters go through our home. Belly Bands -- just saying.. Project looks great.
Carmen Gernhart - yup. Belly bands!
I second that! I have ONE dog that just never potty trained. He always has a belly band and I put a sanitary napkin on the inside.
Come to think of it a kitchen get a LOT more foot traffic than a bedroom. I would at least put scatter rug down and pick usp spills immediately. You also MAY have to repair the floor on occassion. Still, since the pattern is random repairs would be relatively easy to do.
You did a beautiful job, I've done 2 closets, next will be 3 large bedrooms. Love paper floors.
heidi smith thank you Heidi. It's not a long-term solution especially for high traffic areas or if you have pets but it gets you over the hump until you can afford something better. They really do look lovely.
@@SaraMaurnoRealtor It costs more money but a resin finish for floors in place of the poly and the floor would last as long as you want. Baccari (? I think that's the name) has resin that doesn't need to be blow torched. Very, very easy to work with. They have a non-slip version that is wonderful for floors.
Wow. I am In the middle of this doing half my house. I am exhausted by carpet removal and subfloor prep, which contributed to me freaking out over having to patch where there were bubbles or where I had not placed the pieces overlapping enough. Its looking beautiful, though. Since I live where I am doing this, I have been working it like a freeway closure: in phases and so that there are dry lanes you can walk through the project area. I am so thankful you posted the before and after. I'll make a video. Bless the "Leaky One." ❤
The double should flatten as it dries.
I did this several years back and it lasted about 3 years maybe 3 and a 1/2 years before I started seeing wear and tear. Since then I have carpeted the floor. It was an inexpensive and temporary fix. I wish you the best!
Water based poly is not toxic to breath. Perhpas you are thinking of the pil based poly which is really nasty to breath and smells terrible. You don't want to use oil based poly in the project anyway. Still it is always a good idea to work with the windwos open in a well ventalated room. Once the floor is dry - and it dires very quickly you have no need to worry at all. Good luck and let me know how it comes out!
Great job- loved how it turned out and that it will help solve the doggie problem!
I use plastic grocery bags. Have a stack of them ready. Open windows 4ventilation & work your way out of the room. Since you are working in small areas and working it in as you go along you DO NOT have to go back & rub it off. It is actually a pretty fast process. My husband & I worked in dandum. He smeared stain on a 2X2 ft area. I followed to rub it in-not too hard it will almost feel dry as you work it in) Put some good music on & get a rythmn going!
Doesn't matter what side you use as long as you stick to the side you picked. That's only if you want it to be consistent. One side is smoother than the other on the rolled paper.
What a great idea looks very nice and shiny
I am going to try this! So beautiful and cost effective!
Excellent video - very interesting and your home is so lovely!
Great look. But contain that greyhound. A large size crate or better yet a dog door to a secure outdoor kennel will help with house training. If they continue to soil it becomes a habit. It takes time and patience. The track life creates dogs not used to home life. Lots of Exercise is also key. Great job!
Old video and my greyt boy is long gone now. Once I did this floor I no longer had an issue with him. I think another pet had peed on the original floor. My boy adapted very well to home life was happy and free for many years after this video was made and I did not have to crate him. My new rescue was another story - crated her for different issues which have resolved - thank god.
Hummm!...Well I be darn!...How Creatively Interesting!...
Wow! I love it! Thanks for sharing!
Wow, what a nice floor! Thank you for sharing :)
I was wondering the same thing... we would have to walk on it with socks but I'm worried about our dog tromping around with her claws... I really love the look!
Darn - just saw this now . Sorry just saw this for some reason. You are correct. Not suited for high traffic area. I just recarpeted the floor. With my big dogs claws it started showing scratches after a couple years. Because I started with a lousy sub floor which expanded and contracted drastically it started to crack at the seams in the last year. It was never planned to be a permanent solution. lasted 5 years
Great video and thank you for posting this wonderful idea.
Beautiful floors! Its a lot of work!
Handsome Dog!!! Cool idea
I would recommend this floor on low traffic areas. Having lived with it for a year, I do notice some slight cracking that I should be able to repare where the plywood has expanded and contracted with the heat and cold in New England. Concrete would minimise that and yes I have seen people here on RUclips who have done it in basements. I would be VERy carefull about moisture and NOT do it if it is a high traffic area. DO NOT drag furniture over is and WILL scratch.
I brush the stain on and simultaineously rubbed it in gentle circles with plastic grocery bags. Since you can not go back in and wipe it off like you would wih a brushed on stain, gently rub the stain off as you rub it on - if that makes sense. Not sure how else to descibe it. It's not an exact science. Just make sure not to leave it wet or buddle as you go along. Do a 2ft X 2ft area and then move on working yourself out of the room from the furthest corner. post pics when you're done! : )
Tnx 4 replay. I hadn't realised this all started a wooping 10yrs ago.⭐️🌻🌟
I recycle plastic grocery bags for faux paintng treatments. They absorb less product than rags and are plentiful. In small 2-3 foot square areas apply the stain with a brush, then gently wipe the stain in circular motions with the plastic bags. You'll use many. Since you won't be going back to wipe the stain off the way you would on a furniture piece you are leaving a light coat which will penetrate the paper. Don't leave any puddles. Good luck! : )
I just love it!!!
Thank you
Wow just beautiful. Amazing!
Looks great!! I want to try this.
No there are folks online who have done this on cement floors. "Paper Floor: Basement Improvement Project" is one of them. I "DIY Flooring Repair Update" did it over tile in the bathroom too. I'd be really carefully with these types of flooring if you want it to last. Research is key - Good luck. : )
Yeah I thought that to and could not find the answer anywhere. I just took it slow and figured it out along the way. Lucky it turned out ok. : )
leave spots undone to step on, then do them when the other areas are dry.
sorry have to be honest it does not look like wood flooring, but I will agree that it's better than wall to wall carpeting. However with that said it's cost effective and clever
Yes it was not meant to look like wood floor. it's paper. A temporary solution for sure.
patricia Jansen - it looks like stone.... there are other techniques to make it look like wood
Looks to me more like brown slate or cork.
Do you tear the paper to get the affect of leather? Seems it would be easer to just roll it on from the; well, roll?
I LOVE it! Would love to see pics if possible.
sounds like you will have to do it in 2 parts so you can have access. one side. then the other.
👍Great idea,I'm going to do same.
great job
Do you do anything with the joints in the sub floor, fill and sand or does this hide them as well.
bipedalbob fill gaps
I walked on it with socks after 24 hours. However, I waited 5-7 days before I put heavy furniture on it. It needs time to sure or you'll pull up the floor when you try to move the furniture.
I could walk very lightly in socks in in 24 hours.but i didn't put ANY furniture on it for 7 days. It is best in a bedroom where you have low traffic and are barefoor or in slippers. I have a couple srtached that I will soon repair from my dog stretchng in the morning and digging his nails into it. But they will be easily fixable with a small brush and leftover poly. I would use scatter rugsin the kitchen area since it get high traffic. I also don't have to wash this nearly as much in the BR.
Can you explain how exactly you apply stain to the paper and remove the excess?
Where does the floor end and walk begin🤔? Painting the walls a solid color will make the floor stand out more. Floor looks Gr8!
Since it was a cheap and temporary solution I didn't really want the floors to stand out. I've also change this Room around including the color on the walls twice since this video was made. The walls are currently a warm white and there as well to wall carpeting.
No problem at all since it is completely covered by the thick brown paper.
Sorry...just seeing this today. I am sure it is just a matter of preference. I saw pics of floors that has larger sheets, but I liked the motled random look of the smaller pieces. Let me know if you decide to do it! : )
So you put glue on the floor, then put the paper on the floor right side up, then put more glue on the right side? But you don't glue anything to the paper so why put glue on it?
Hey that is a great idea!
I am hoping that you will see this question given that the video is older. I was wondering how you clean the floor? With water based poly I don't think you can mop, right? It is basically sweep and wipe up any liquids with a paper towel, ASAP? I ask because I am just finishing a remodel on a room that is 22 x 22 and I don't know what I want to do for permanent flooring and can't really afford it right now either. The floor boards were painted with Kilz because I originally planned to just paint them and live with them but then I saw this video and the idea of using white paper on rolls was intriguing. The room is going to be a craft room and sometime guest room. I will caulk the subflooring since several people in the comments have recommended doing that and it sounds form your responses that yours cracked because it wasn't caulked. I wonder what kind of caulk would be best? Any thoughts on that? I will have to do one half the room at a time since I have furniture on one half that I don't have any place to store but I think as long as I keep a straight edge in the middle where the two edges are going to meet then I shouldn't have trouble with the poly not going well over itself. The guys at the hardware store told me that if you put poly over dry poly it will lift the first poly up. I don't know if that is just if you haven't let it cure for 7 days or not. Anyway, thank you for the tutorial and if you have any ideas/answers to my questions I would appreciate the help.
Deborah
Hi ! Just seeing this - I used a damp mop on the floor. This is an old video so I don't have the floor any more. I would recommend not using a soppying web mop or letting spills sit for long. I don't know what would happen. This was a temp fix than lasted about 5 years. Would have been longer if not for our dog.
For about 40 bucks you could get a pole and applicator and do that room with 1 gallon of poly. Two coats! I sand the first coat with 400 paper.
Thank you for saying so. : )
thanks I thought it was like wood where you had to remove the excess and couldnt figure how you would do that without disturbing the floor
My pleasure! : )
Love it!!
Thanks - months later it's wearing well and the pup hasn't had one accident.
Neither really, but if I had to pick one - I guess it feels more like vinly. Yet is is warm under foot which surprised me. Maybe becasue of the subflooring. I like walking barefoot on it.
Beautiful
What kind of varnish would you add to the floor. I'm going do this on the walls too but need to know if I need ditterent type varnish for walls. Waterbase/ oil base. What would Your take on that be.?
Thank for brill idea.
Cheap but cheerful😉
Happy days.
One more thing will brown paper on walls keep the heat in better?
So sorry this is an old video and I don't often see comments. I used water based poly. It dried fast between coats so I was able to do many. Also was far less stinky.
Before I got cancer and learned about exactly what causes it and how to avoid it, I would’ve thought this is an incredible idea! And honestly, all of the glue and other chemicals that are in carpet and other types of flooring are just as bad. We are better off walking on dirt floors!
Wendy Vaughn Sorry to hear about your cancer. But since this is on the 2nd floor I would have to bring the dirt in.
I love white flagstone floors but can’t afford them. Is there a light colored paper that can be used? I would love to try this technique!
Why not try butcher's paper?
Sharon Peek Great idea! Thanks!
How is your floor doing? How do you n clean it? I was thinking of putting wood floors bit seen this and really liked it.

As a dog owner, THANKYOU for addressing the urine on floor issues.
How has this floor held up to 'accidents'?

Patchwork rug
Could I use this technique or with cloth over a small 1" sq. ceramic tile in a bathroom?
Very interesting. Not suited for high traffic areas I'm assuming?

I put kraft paper on stairs which are the only entrance to my home. It is holding up perfectly after 3 years. I used 7 coats of polyurethane.
I have done the paper floor in my bathroom and I'm planing to do it all over my house. I'm wondering what I'm going to do when my entire living room is wet with stain and poly. I can't get to my bedroom or bathroom without walking through my living room. Any advice?
I know there are other products out there for counter tops. I would not do this on a counter. It would scratch and would not stand up to standing water puddles etc.
I was curious how you put on the stain. Did you brush it on with a regular brush or did you wipe it on, or blot it etc? What did you use to put it on? I'm done with my utility room. Turned out great! However, Ididn't do the stain. I'm doing a jaccobean for my kitchen and want to make sure I do it right. Thanks!
great idea. never thought of using crafting paper for flooring.. is it long lasting? do you suggest it for basement concrete floor?
I'm thinking of doing this to my kitchen. Since it won't have any furniture put on it, how long before it can be walked on?
Hi- hey got the floor done pretty much, but I noticed the stain in some places looks a little blotchy and white in some places. Can I put two coats of stain on this? Would I have to sand in between? and how should I apply the second coat? Really appreciate your help :)
I would be careful about water spilling on this and setting for very long. It is a water based poly and would leave rings. Altough there is a product...somekind of torn wallpaper technique that has a textured look that gives a faux look of venitian plaster or even stone...I seem to remember it can be used on counter tops. You may want to do a search on that too.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO...
It turned out so Beautiful...
... Please Note: it's hard to READ the
words when they're moving... Great video
and Editing... but moving words make some
people dizzy...
Thank you for sharing this video...
Thanks this was quite a while ago and my first attempt. I agree it makes me dizzy too lol
I know this was was done a long time ago but >>> could you use brown paper bags, they are free with groceries and if you pack your own bags you can collect them faster or get others to give you theirs.
Why not?
Seems like a lot of work for a “temporary” solution. It looks like torn paper bags on the floor too. How would this resell?
It is torn paper bags on the floor. I didn't mind doing the work because it cost me about a 125 bucks. I need it to get the gross carpet up and had not decided what I was going to do yet. It gave me time to think about how I wanted to remodel the Room. As a realtor I'm aware of resale value and would not recommend this if you are thinking of selling your home. It got us through our dogs issues.
i saw how u put down the zinsser bin did this cause any problems with the floor being a different color in the places u painted it on the floor?
How does the floor hold up with large dog's toenails?
They would need to be trimmed and filed regularly. Even my little JRT has long tough spiky toenails. Which she doesn't like being touched by anyone but me!!!
Thanks. I'd love to do this in my guest bathroom. Any thoughts on that?
I would think the floor would be fine. 6-8 coats of poly urethane should do the trick. I’d try it. The seal should protect the floor from water damage ...
Yes I did 6-8 coats
I live in a mobile home..do you think I could do this method for my bedroom? Would the high heat and humidity of my area (Texas) cause issues with the polyurethane and its curing time? If I can even pull this off..should I wait till winter to attempt it? My room quite small if that matters.
This was a very interesting tutorial for the process. All other tutorials I saw only used polyurethane for laying down the paper not Mod Podge! Thanks for the video! Your room was just stunning at the end!
Since this reply is a while later, it will only be good for information for others. I am using Varthane for the finish in a high humidity and warm area. No problem with dry time or curing. With only 2 coats, the dog made a scratch, but I am going up to the recommended 7 coats at least.
I wonder what this would look like if you added color to the glue or poly. Or used colored paper...
Try it. Why not? I did stain the floor.
Just curious, is there a reason to use the small paintbrush on a pole as opposed to using a roller?
It's what I had handy
I tried using a roller and it just leaves bubbles. A painting pad on a long handle works best for large areas. A brush works also for small sections.
Oh..one more question..did you use a semi or high gloss poly? Thx
where do you get all the paper from and how did you get it to look like one whole sheet ?
Can I make a brown craft paper table top?
Whats the best tine to do this project?
how do you get the redwood minwax stain on
I'm wondering if it will work on a cement floor
Maybe better than wood because there's no shrinking or expanding.
Whould you have different advice if I were going to try this technique over a concrete subfloor?
Gene den Daas for concrete subfloor, put down a coat of poly to act as a vapor barrier and to fill the pores prior to laying down the paper "tiles"
should work better on concrete. It was never planned to be a permanent solution. lasted 5 years
Nature's miracle is really good to hide urine smells from the offender!! I was impressed!
Thank you! I did try it on this area but the wood had been saturated probably by a previous pet. I am using it now on a new rug in the Room and you are right, it is pretty impressive.
Does it feel like vinyl or cement?
