Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog absolutely reignited the colorful fire of great German Films! Wenders adaptation of Hysmiths; ‘Ripleys Game’ is by far the best in existence and the most pure retelling. European films of the 1970’s and early 1980’s are incomparable.
I agree with Le popou. A fascinating movie. Based upon the great Author Patricia Highsmith. Although not being one of her best novels, Wenders managed to Direct it into a Masterwork. Both Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper played it showing how good they could be. Though it is Hopper the one who carries on with the weight of almost the whole movie. Some scenes left its footprints on my mind, as the ones with Hopper in Hamburg, or the one with the Wolkswagen rambling thru the beach. Surely the main character never brought the Beatles back to Hamburg, nor did he even tried. But the mere idea lied in my mind until nowadays. Such is the power of this singular movie. A cult one, and a passionating one, also. 🎦💖💎👍
I saw a still shot in the Bourdain documentary Road Runner and the face looked familiar and I realized it was Bruno Ganz even though I only knew him from Downfall and Manchurian Candidate when he was much older. Did a google picture search for Bruno Ganz scene on train... and voila, I am going to go look for and watch this movie now. RIP Tony, thanks for turning me on to a movie that looks promising...
To Bruno Ganz as Hitler: Ganz gave by no means a Hitler parody. Traudl Jung, Hitlers longtime secretary, who stayed in the bunker to the very little end, together with other Hitler servants like his chauffeuer gave a pretty detailed description of the last days and Hitlers behaviour. Hitler had exactly these outbursts and frantic crying as portrayed by Ganz; the shaking of the hand, the dreams of imaginary forces he believed to command etc. So THIS IS NOTHING ELSE BUT A WORLD CLASS FANTASTIC performance by Bruno Ganz! - people who criticize him for that should do their homework before.
It is a masterpiece without a doubt. Melville's Le Samourai and Le Cercle rouge must've had a great influence on Wenders. The underground and the train sequences prove that. It's brilliant how the pictures and the atmosphere show resemblance and in the meantime the characters are totally different because Jeff Costello uses the Paris underground as a professional to remain invisible or get rid of the police while Jonathan is the antithesis of a criminal, so nervous, conspicuous and close to be exposed.
@kudashaeYes. I prefer his early films. His road movie called Im Lauf der Zeit (the English title is Kings of the road) is very touching. I recommend it in case you haven't seen it. His critically most acclaimed works in his prime aren't too close to my taste, either.
This one starts off well, but it gets sillier and more inconsequential as it goes on. It's the kind of film that hipster critics love (you can't dislike a movie with Nicholas Ray and Sam Fuller in small parts), but that audiences can't wait to be finished with, so that they can go home, get a drink and maybe a bite to eat, and go to bed. "Wim Wenders clearly is in love with the cinema!" the critics will say. Yeah, maybe he is, but even Wenders can't make a good movie from a rotten out-of-control screenplay.
The first woman to get off the train looks a lot like Patricia Highsmith. I doubt she would do a cameo like that. Perhaps it was a little joke from Wenders.
That movie I've studied extensively when I was a film student a long time ago. It's one of the most fascinating movies I've seen.
Le Poupou how so?
Explain more please, just seen this film and it indeed was quite interesting. Also very interested in film myself...

That train sequence is one of the funniest and most Suspenseful sequences I have seen in cinema

Your comment gets more silly and inconsequential as it goes on and I suspect your entire life will too.

the song in the background sounds so familiar... what is it?
It is the ost from Jurgen Knieper.

Yup, what happened to Bruno Ganz all those years later? Certainly "filled out", ahem, just barely believable as a chunky Hitler.
Dennis Hopper??? NEVER MIND!👎🏿
hahaha im reaction was the complete opposite. Dennis Hopper?! Hell yes!
Lovely piece of Yank propaganda.
why you think it's yank propaganda..what's actually "propangated"?
Yank propaganda directed by a German and based on a book written by a Brit. Very astute of you.
