RUclips user cisumetihW recently posted 3 tracks from this, but they're in black & white and even as the uploader stated, the quality is not that good. So here's a copy I put together from clips that were once on RUclips, yet after a quick search, all appear to have since vanished apart from one (track 6) But I think people will appreciate that although the footage here is still far from dvd quality, it is in colour and I have synced it to a stereo audio source. I'm not sure if these clips made up the full TV broadcast but they're all I was ever able to find. So crank up the volume and enjoy the set...

Breathtaking performance. So tight and articulated. I've been an XTC fan since Oranges and Lemons debuted in 1989. And then I went backward and discovered what incredible song-smiths and rhythm-timbre-arrangement ground-breakers they were, And over time met people in the Boston area who went to the rare early live shows and exclaimed how tight and exciting they were live. This exemplifies that feeling, and it's 2D video! It's jumping off the screen. I wondered just now if some people in 1978 thought "oh they're quirky and talented and punkie but a little derivative or just can't put a finger on it. They're not the Sex Pistols or the Ramones or Blondie or the Cars. I don't think they'll be around in the 1980s." Not realizing what talented composers and arrangers they were, You can here how novel and intricate their early ideas were. I've heard White Music and liked it. This performance is the album turned up to 11.
That's what I love about people who know their music, when they discover a band that touches a nerve, they delve into their past discography and unearth a treasure of recordings and activities held in time for them to enjoy, which in turn seals and bonds their own personal connection to them forever, it's a great experience.. Really appreciate your comment Brian, although I'd have to say as a late teenager myself back then, I think the majority of us going to gigs and buying records knew bands like XTC would go far, they were just too good not to. Professional, tight, great twists and turns in their music, awesome songs, it all equals to a great band.. I like to think that America had their own version, another awesome band in a similar vein to XTC, and that's Devo. Both of these bands did, and continued to do very well across both sides of the pond, and rightly so...
It was a great era, th end of the 70's and starting 80's, best era for me, for a lot of bands, remember Disco was hammering everywhere... Bands like XTC, Joe Jackson, Police,Devo, Television, The Tubes, etc, etc. were refreshing! When Rock kicked Disco out!
I watched this the night it was originally on tv (and recorded it off the radio at the same time as it was simultaneously broadcast) and then listened to it again and again for months...thus began my love affair with XTC. Just fucking brilliant
I remember watching this in my mums living room , she had an old teak gramophone with amazing stereo sound , what a great era of new wave music of what XTC were head and shoulders above the rest ...
The only band that makes you work to like them. Once you do you are hooked.
XTC appreciators will remain ahead of the pack!
Gawd I love this BAND
Loved XTC ever since I heard Science Friction. It was played to me by the owner of a local record store (Flashback) and I bought it straight away. I'm a Swindon lad and saw them many times and was gutted when they stopped touring. Thanks for the effort.
This. Is. Awesome. Proof that from the very beginning XTC was one of the all-time great rock bands.
I can't imagine what I was thinking when I first
heard this. Crazy good 40 yrs later.
Oh my Lordy... What a kinetic and utterly spastic band they were in the early days. I've never seen/ heard "X Wires" live or their version of "Watchtower"--a ridiculous rarity! That this video exists at ALL is astounding. A big thumbs up to rp61productions!
Here's another version of Cross Wires, from 1977 - September - 3.

What a great show. The keyboards look like a home science project, but the sound works!
It's like they're on helium, kids!
I see what you did there, Go 2 the top of the class.. XD
Tight as you like. Sign of a good band.
Remember watching this on TV back in 1978. This typifies the great and powerful alternative music that was around in that era.
I come back to this again and again... great compilation. Manic opening which cannot be beat!!
Musicianship and magic combined. What a performance. Wonderfulness thanks for sharing this it is a tonic to the ridiculous modern non music of 2018.
Possibly the most underrated band ever. This video is a joy to listen to and watch. Quality. Thank you, uploader. :D
beautifully and breathtakingly on-the-edge-of-ragged but always just-about-in-line. The proper beating heart of new wave punk (sorry...'Pop') . No posing, just energy.

Perfectly summed up.100% agree with you.
Fantastic. Great sound quality and brings back happy memories and pride that something this great had come out of Swindon. That first XTC album is still my favourite
I'm spontaneously clapping after each song.
I love Colin's singing on 'x wires'
Excellent ! So much pocket! Man I wish I could have seen them...
Very Devo too. Saw both bands back in the day 👍
Man these boys made some great noise back in the day!
This is the xtc I first happened across playing in a London pub. Just totally blew me away.
Terrific. Never heard them till I saw them live, and I was hooked. Still am.
Tonethelone , said,
If anyone knows the Marx brothers, so farrrr ahead of their time in the black and white film industry , XTC do it by millions of light years in the music industry . Thank you Andy, Colin, Terry , Barry and of course Dave .
Saw them once @ Paradiso Amsterdam. One of the best shows i've ever seen.
Thanks for sharing this video ;-)
Thanks for taking the effort to post this. Love xtc
Unbelievable sound! Great sync. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome job! There's never enough from this band.
Thanks for the upload! I’m sure their kids and their generations to come are extremely grateful. 🙏
It's always cool to watch some old XTC . You did a pretty damn good job at it. Thanks for the upload !!
What an eXTCellent vid, they were simply incomparable in many respects! Thx 4 posting rp61!
The stereo sync is fantastic! Thanks so much for posting this early XTC with the original members, including Barry Andrews on keyboards. A great sound for the time.
Never got to see xtc. Should have been seeing them in 82 but you know what happened then!
So good to see these vids. Thanks for sharing with us all :-)
Great job, thanks for taking the effort to get this up. Fantastic sound!
Never thank enough. This is actually what I've been waiting to watch. Just realized again the early XTC is so much underrated in their long-time carrier.
Yes, together with PATTO the most underrated band, indeed
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks!
Wow, what a great syncing of audio for the best possible way to watch this. Fantastic to see the boys from Swndon in top youthful energatic form! Back in the days when musicians played instruments and performance wasn't a fashion statement. Super talented men. They truly changed my way of appreciating music in 1979 when I discovered them. I was the odd ball in highschool. Barry Andrews added so much in those first two albums. Terry Chambers is a maniac on drums. Colin cool and calmest. Andy young and beyond energetic shredding vocals and guitar.
I'd seen these before, but the audio quality is really outstanding here. Nice touch! Thank you for posting!
I saw XTC twice … almost. The first was in 1980 at the Santa Monica Civic with Oingo Boingo opening. The 2nd time was 1982 at the Hollywood Paladium. I forget who opened for them but as XTC were about to take the stage the air was electric! To this day it was the most unique and exciting moments I’ve ever experienced.
And then over the PA came the announcement “The Show Has Been Cancelled!”
And as far as I know wherever they played previous to that night was the last time XTC ever played live.
I’m sure someone can correct me on that if I’m wrong, but yeah, there’s a whole backstory as to why that happened that night.
What a great live band. I wish I’d seen them more.
"If that was pop, I wouldn't want to meet mum!" (Peter Cook)
your sync turned out great!
xtcellent, thanks. great work by the way...
Bought White Music with my school lunch money back all those years ago. I remember this gig when it happened. Thank you so much for sharing it. This is as strong now as it was back then. I think they ended the gig with Neon Shuffle. Loved Barry Andrews work on this.
Great work, much appreciated. Greatest band too!
They were great musicians
im swooning im fanning myself
When the Gods were young... I am not worthy. Thank you for the Post!
Brilliant...how about this...The Stone Roses had heard The Dukes Of Stratosphere & got John Leckie due to 25 OClock...eg XTC...however listen to Colins Bass line on All along the watch tower...Fools Gold... Bass line ...almost, I think you'll find!! Anyone else ever spotted this? Better speak to Mani.
Watchtower performance will go down as one of the great filmed performances of all time.
Fantastici. La loro versione di All Along the WatchTower è fantastica.
This is pretty amazing!❤
Oh you absolute gem for taking the time and effort to out this together.
that should have read 'put this together'. Crosswires came on and my typing went all wonky..
Rewatching this, damn! Andy is like a man-guitar machine :-o
NEW TOWN ANIMAL IN A FURNISHED CAGE is excellent...sad i never got to see them perform live
I saw them on this tour at Northampton, and was forever smitten.
Thank you for this.
Somewhere in a box, amongst many other boxes I have this on VHS.
I was always terrible at labeling and organisation, and still am, and with moving house a lot in the 1980s and 1990s , I don't know where things are in all those boxes in the loft!
it will take a Very very long time to watch all of my VHS from the 70s and 80s
Label organisation was the key back then if VHS archiving ;-) But in all seriousness, XTC fans would go nuts for a quality version of this to circulate, it kills me now to know that out there somewhere in someones loft, lay a VHS tape with not only THE ultimate version of this, but also possibly contains the last 2 tracks which are missing from this broadcast here :(Dance Band & Neon Shuffle):
POST YOUR VHSES PLEASE!
Great performance.
Brilliant Band I love this era in their career
Great, Great, Great, Great!!!!
These guys could play. Not heard these songs for years
Brilliant job - sure, maybe the video is a bit dodgy, but the audio is perfect! Thanks for this!
Hey hello !! loved ur comment on the XTC sight and sound of 1978 !! I also have said to all my friends that this group was Brilliant back when I was privileged to see them in 1978,79, & 80. I am an avid/cult follower of their music. All the material they laid out up til the Nonsuch album I have on vinyl and the singles as well.... you are the very first person that I have crosswires with that has ever Exclaimed BRILLIANT on the net & never anyone in person.. So, congrats to you with ur two words..."BRILLIANT JOB'... and to those who reads this come on board, have a listen... try out 'ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER'
A Brooke A Brooke. It's always nice to meet another fellow XTC fan! I got busy a few years back and compiled a pretty comprehensive collection of XTC material on DVD. It's 4 DVD's packed -- and then a 5th supplementary one that includes the S&S stuff, and a few other great clips. It's pretty cool, if you'd like a copy.
A Brooke Boy, timing is everything! There is a group on FB, XTC-Collectors -- where I mentioned I have this, and it is now getting weeded out. Just go to that thread and post that you're interested in a copy (I've already sent out 5 copies -- 25 DVD's -- and I'm burned out. You should end up with a copy eventually, you just need to post on that thread. :)
Barry Andrews keyboard
Brilliant
This Sight And Sound Concert Enabled XTC To Make " There Idiosyncratic Musical Pitch " Which " Thankfully Paid Off Handsomely " For Both The latter End Of The 70's And And " A Significant Part Of The Following Decade " !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
Awesome 👏
much has been written about Andy's inability to perform live after 1982. At least we have these great videos from early concerts, compiled by rp61 Productions and other cool people.
my favorite era of these guys. At the Hop fav.....................then Cuba and then ? everthing It is all great
The finest band ever to come out of the UK Sad i cant see the now, but I had my three gig exposure to them, and that is better than most
So glad they quickly grew out of this phase of their musical careers
Their later shows are really great but with Barry Andrews they were an entirely different band. They were more out of control like pop art and were very in tune with the punk energy. With Dave Gregory, they became much more controlled and musical. Andy stayed eccentric but they also changed popular music by writing very elaborate songs.
A treasure.
Loveley! Postpunk and new age with a big POP underlining. They where good then, and only got better...
Used to have this taped from the radio, back in the day, and Ma and Pa wouldn't have appreciated so didn't see on the telly, Barry Andrews was perfect for the period, but Dave Gregory really made the XTC sound that most People know and love.
The whole concert is available on CD in the Transistor Blast boxset. Actually, I think the audio in this very video is from there!
Now this is a Partridge family I can get behind :)
Nice **** awe when a wizz 12 , legend XTC
Super concert de xtc avec un excellent andy partridge
WOW !
I could watch Terry all day..
Back when...............(78?) I was hit with XTC JOE and the Clash. Each was great.
Rock 'n roll!
Knut Møgster no, never
Unos fenomenos XTC All Along The Watchtower 13:15
The day before my 9th birthday....we lived in Golders green
Reminds me of bebop. Love it.
Bennie Townsend I see “Statue of Liberty” naturally segued into “Out of Touch” by Bill Nelson’s Red Noise as thoroughly groovy too.
They gave pop rock the noise injection it so badly needed.
Too, too good. Smash n grab at the speed of light.
BIG!!!
Look at those kids, they are almost neon!
wa-wooh!
Radios in Bewegung!
THIS IS POP.
Hey....... Thanks. Never saw this. Where the hell do people get stuff?
kicks ass band
i am in pigs heaven................awesome!!!
ditto and likewise !
.... and after 1978 Bob Dylan starting performing this arrangement in preference of it over his own and Hendrix's.
Lovely to see the lads bouncing about like this. Tight as a duck's arse, I tell ya! And just a little demented. I'm too old ot dance to this now, bit better with The Dead. Thanks mate !
peoples life are changed by listening to this band or should be
