  • A few weeks ago I collaborated with Rowland Metalworks on instagram to make some of these EDC Marlin spikes / awl / ice pick so I decided id film the process for you all.

    Watching you make the handle reminded me that my Dad use to make all our Fire Poker’s. He worked in the engineering department at the same Colliery that I would end up working at. The handles were striped with thin layers of, Brass - Aluminium - Copper and thicker layers of Bakelite

    They are rather cool mate. Some trivia for ya, as you know in the navy they have whats known as Jack Speak, well small marlinspikes like these are called prickers. Random yes very lol

    Beautiful work, friend. Reminds me of the fountain pens my Dad made when I was a kid. He knew better than to give me things with a wicked pointy end like that awl.

    I used to work with an industrial food mixer so whenever I see someone use a lathe it sends an icy chill up my spine. On the plus side nice job.

      Plus i can actually stop this with my hand, its belt drive and the belt is really loose.

    Love the handle materials. I am a leather worker, and this awl would be great for my craft. Perhaps with a bit thinner taper point

      Cheers mate, i do them with a thinner shank for people who prefer it that way but definitely work perfectly for leather.

    With the amount of awls and spikes I've had to make over time, why in the world did I never think to use a drill to sand them down? uuuuuurgh.

    Beautiful workmanship. I would add a threaded end for ring toot use in longer handle but i like it as is. Great resin wood collection

      It’s similar to sanding mate just really fine so it buffs it up nicely before a final buff. I did a video on it on my Instagram.

    Wow, that came out awesome!! I think a silver or aluminium liner one either side of the blue insert in the handle would look really sweet. This looks great though. :)

      Thanks mate, no I went with stainless steel so it’s tough and won’t rust plus easy for end user to sharpen again

      @@DiesInEveryFilm on your FB page so when there is something worth showing I will put it there, being made from a worn out brake disc off a bike lol, but the steel will harden and is good enough to start with, besides I am skint so all being done on the cheap or free lol

    Not taking anything away from your work, which is exceptional; but why would you need an awl/icepick/marlin spike as an EDC? That shit would get you arrested where I come from 👍🇦🇺

      They are used by many people mate, carpenter will use them in work daily so need to EDC it and a mariner uses it to untie knots so will EDC one, i sell all over the globe and different countries have different laws so you need to think it caters to many not few.
