A lot of people are so focused on what they think Superman should be that they ignore what the neck-snapping scene was actually supposed to mean. The entire movie was set up telling how this alien is rejected at every moment of his life and feels like he doesn't belong, no matter how hard he tries to help people. Then, when he actually finds his own people, he is forced to choose between them or the humans, who have done nothing but push him around. Miraculously, he chooses to protect the humans, but at the cost of the Kryptonians' lives. With all the Kryptonians sucked to the Phantom Zone, Zodd is literally the last one of his kind, and yet again, Superman chooses to protect the humans. The neck-snapping is jarring and it's easy for us to judge Kal based on our preconceptions of what Superman is supposed to be. But if you just take the scene at face value, solely in the context of the movie, you can see why this scene was tragic. Superman screaming, "DON'T DO THIS! STOP! STOP!!" is not a forceful command. He's pleading with Zodd to stop because the last thing Kal-el wants is to kill the only other Kryptonian. People criticize the scream at the end too for being over-dramatic, but if you look at it this way, that scream makes perfect sense. He had to kill the last of his kind for people who never loved him all because of what, morality? That's a tough pill to swallow even for someone who is bulletproof and can fly.
syd bohne Bro when you said “Kal has no true home” 😓 😞 Wow. This was awesome to read. Brought up a lot of things that I didn’t think about. One of the reasons I love Spiderman 2 ( my favorite superhero movie), is the fact that he’s all alone. He gets fired from his job, slipping up in school, his aunt finds out Peter actually killed his uncle, Mary Jane hates him. He literally gives up being Spiderman to have a real life. Then he realizes he has to be Spiderman, no matter the sacrifice. Kal is actually in a worse situation, like you stated. People of earth hate him and want to control him, and the last of his true people, who he’s been searching for his whole life, want to destroy him. It’s heartbreaking. Amazing movie. Amazing analysis Syd 👏🏼
i still think the yell after he kills zod is the greatest pure emotional acting moment in henry's career. The sheer pain of knowing he is now the last of his kind after killing zod, expressed perfectly.
i believe it's less of him being sad he's the last of his kind, and having made the active choice to end a life. that's the first in the DCEU. he upholds the ideal that no one needs die, and he won't take a life.
“If you love these people so much, you can Mourn for them” That must have truly hurt him, to no what he had to do. To kill, but not just that, but most likely ending the race with only him being the last. Somewhere inside of him, he had really lost the battle.

Watching Zod in the Flash gives a whole new meaning to these scenes. This was an inexperienced Superman, fighting against a skilled warrior that trained his entire life. Looking back at what happened between general Zod and Supergirl, Kal El deserves his flowers for putting an end to Zod.
The only thing that helped Superman defeat Zod was all the years he had been exposed to the sun. And Superman just straight-up overpowered Zod. While Kara just got out of prison in less than a day.
I’d say it was a very close call between Superman and Zod. Keep in mind that Kal El had been on Earth for decades. Zod just needed mere hours to adjust. During the final fight it’s evident that Zod was becoming more powerful as the fight went on. Superman managed to kill Zod because he gave up, he lost his entire sense of purpose and had nothing to live for. He could’ve killed that family instantly but choose not to, giving Kal El the opportunity to put him out of his misery. I promise you, if Zod was on Earth for a week before he confronted Kal El, this would’ve been very problematic and it might have been too late to stop him. A well struck performance by Michael Shannon, Zod truly is one of the greatest villains of all time, that upheld his threat “Watch this world suffer the consequences”.
@@stark6050he means he's been under the yellow sun for longer and had more time to adjust while Kara was stuck in prison and drained of her powers, yes, Kara absorbs some yellow sun, but she never got the same 30 odd years of exposure that Clark did growing up on Earth

@@rickpeterson8825 the battle against Thanos is amazing. It’s a matter of opinion, personally the super man fight just feels like there is more at stake for me and I think it’s completely due to the soundtrack and the way the camera follows them as they fight.
Kal's scream at the end is what made this scene amazing to me. You can tell that he really didn't want to kill Zod knowing that he was the only other person in the universe that came from the same planet
@Ders snek in me boots But at that point and beyond, Kal had no clue of his cousin's existence, and still doesn't. As far as he understands it, he's the last of his species, and he caused it through his own hands (literally at that), and has to face the reality of it without having anyone who actually understands what's it like to be the last of your kind (until Martian Manhunter came onto the scene, that is), and therefore, probably feels alone in a certain sense despite having people who genuinely care and love him.
There’s a vid about the last existing bird of an extinct species, as it cries for a partner or even friend to respond it only receives silence. God have mercy for the last bastard of our kind for we are the first and most likely final truly intelligent species.
And the fact too Clark also had never killed at that point, even when he had used his powers to help others before donning the Superman costume. And the fac t he _HAD_ to kill Zod shook him deep down, since he didn't want to, but was left with no choice.
All I can say is "Good luck James! You're gonna need it" this movie is a masterpiece from start to finish. Don't care what anyone says. THIS was the Superman movie I always wanted. Just wish Zack got the chance to finish his story.
I feel asleep in the movie theatre watching Man of Steel. It's too slow, it's too dark for a Superman movie (would have worked for a graphic novel but not a movie) and the final fight between Zod and Superman is too short.
His idea of making a movie in which Superman begins in a world where heroes already exist does not convince me very much, Snyder managed to perfectly show the impact that a being like Superman would have in a world where beings like that are not common at all and that was barely the beginning.

@Abdelrahman Eldesouki i did. The boys fights aren't that realistic but invincible fight sure it was. I think they are on the same level but I think that zod vs superman was way more realistic because it was live action. It was literally a real simulation of what would happen if two gods fought in a city but omni-man and invincible fight was intense and real too
Michael Shannon is his name, he’s a very underrated actor, but he is an amazing one. that ‘Never’ was so believable in this scene, as if he truly would never stop
ZOD is a such a great villain character it's astonishing, not just in writing but IN ACTION too. Love how the whole fight progressively shows off Zod becoming more skilled with his powers, from heat vision to flight to x-ray vision and speed, and beyond (literally) Makes me realize that part where they reenter Earth was supposed to be suspenseful as if you don't know who's winning, they're equally powerful now. Also realizing now that Superman was trying to fly away with Zod in the end, but Zod grabbed and pulled him down by kneeling to kill those people. It's hard to tell cuz the shaky cam. This half of the fight shows how much of a monster Zod can be, and he had to be stopped IMMEDIATELY. Underrated
If you really think about it, General Zod's death shouldn't be your typical bad guy dies happy celebration, it's more a like a serious tragedy. Kal was extremely hurt by it, And the Music tells you exactly that.
Yeah. Taking the last member of your race's life shouldn't sit well (especially when you have no other choice). I think that goes over most hater's heads.
It's because General Zod was also once a dear friend of Kal El's father Jor El. Jor El begged Zod to see reason as well, that their world was dying and needed a savior not a warrior and that he just wanted his friend. It is tragic but it also proves an old addage that some warriors are so set in their ways they cannot see the greater good. Kryptonians were like humans once that is why Jor El chose Earth. A people that could grow and advance and become even more advanced and powerful than even Krypton itself once was.
And the fact that he had to kill the last living being of Krypton other than himself, too. He lost the only chance he had to really learn what Krypton, it's culture, people, history, and even his own family were like. He may have chosen humanity, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still feel alone among them. He's still an orphan from an entirely different and unknown *PLANET* as well as culture, left with very little knowledge of his origins, compared to just about any human adult alive.
@@BreitheNua I don't think that was the reason though, his father already told him what he needs to know. What its true is that he is sad that he had to kill for the first time and at the same time ending the last of his people.
So was Kara Zor el weaker than Kal el? I was kinda sad with how Kara just kept failing and won in literally no scenario even with name tag and wall hacks enabled by flash /:
One would argue she was spent in captivity and away from the sun when she got to Earth so she hadn’t developed any her abilities nor super strength allowing herself to be easily experimented on and tortured. So yes, she was significantly weaker than Kal El who grew up his entire life *in* the yellow sun, absorbing it.

It made me think on my latest rewatch, “Oh, Zod is Krypton’s Superman.” The culmination of their eugenicist, colonialist, xenophobic values; their Übermensch, with the power to destroy anything, any “heresy,” in his way.
The genuine shock and fear on Supermans face when Zod starts to float is just pure fucking artwork. This wasn't just a threat anymore, it was a real do or die danger that needed to be addressed. The first round starts out with "You're a monster Zod and I'm gonna stop you," then in the second round there are no words to be said. The threat went from a Tornado warning to a full on F5 twister. Clark knew what he had to do from then on. Stop. This. Monster. Now.
Very well said. Superman couldn't believe that the ability that took him years to do, was immediately been able to do by his enemy for ONE day only. He needs to kill the mofo or his going to adapt exponentially.
Still the best fight scene in any superhero movie and one of the best ever made. All the action is in camera with no quick edits and it still looks fantastic 10 years later. This is the only movie that showed what would happen if two gods actually fought in a city.
Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman vs Doomsday was better than this, from the same director. This fight had the potential to be amazing but it's way too short.
I love how this is the only movie I've seen in live action capable of transcripting the level of devastation a fight between these characters would be. Even the MCU falls short... The only memorable huge battle was the battle of New York, and even then it was kinda "safe". Here you see people dying, a city being totally destroyed, and absolute chaos... All because two "gods" are fighting each other.
Yes! I love the MCU, but this movie captures just how devastating being with superspeed and superstrength would be. MCU really makes Thor and Hulk look like they are tiptoing around even at their maddest.
@Kieron Campion Not when they got someone equally strong and fast fighting them. Holding back just gives that enemy more of a chance to inflict more destruction in the future. If he was fighting Luthor or another villain that doesn't match up to him in speed or strength, then he may have a chance to hold back. But here, this is all out, kill or be killed.
@Kieron Campion like cracking jokes while the whole city gets devastated? Oh yeah. Even if the collateral damage killed a few people there, had Zod won he would've proceed to extinguish the human race, every single human on the planet, out of pure anger and frustration.

In the comics, it is actually said or implied that Zod never manages to beat Superman because of either his limited exposure to the yellow Sun, achieving powers AS Superman but not as developed as his, or ( and this is my personal one) because of his age( in Superman/Batman -Apocalypse, Batman said that Kara metabolizes Sun radiation more efficiently, probably because she is younger than Kal-El), or a combo of both.

I don't understand why people hated this fight, it's 2 kryptonians fighting, basically Gods in battle. I'm surprised the entire city wasn't leveled to the ground.
The main issue with this fight is not them leveling the city. It’s Superman being apathetic to the people in danger while it’s being leveled. Every portrayal of Superman would have him saving people left and right while also fighting Zod. That is a pretty large over sight here. All they needed was him saving a few people while the buildings crumbled and it would have been a perfect fight. But they needed to set up B vS and if Superman had been saving people then Batman wouldn’t have hated him as much.
Do you really think Superman would have been able to save anyone in this fight if he let himself get distracted? Odds are he would just get the civilians killed in the crossfire, or Zod would kill them out of spite in the middle of the battle.
@@omegashinobi There’s nothing logical about any of these movies. I’m explaining to you and others what the major problem for so many people were with that scene. I love this movie and saw it multiple times upon its release. That one fight scene really soured a large number of people to the movie.
Because it has so many ridiculously stupid plot points. 1. the whole kryptonian act is so convoluted and silly. pregnancy is banned yet a famous scientist manages to hide his wife for the whole pregnancy? super duper skull with genetic code and it's just floating in some watery cavern? superman's mother peacefully waits for her death and is artfully consumed by ash and fire. 2. Zod is shot out to space as punishment... like what? is that standard procedure? is space full of frozen criminally condemned kryptonians? 3. superman isn't allowed to save his father. An old man got in, had the time to signal to clark not to come and then peacefully wait for his death and is artfully consumed by dust and wind. Clark could have walked in and got him out without ever revealing any super powers. (edit: and the fact that this guy who knows he has an invulnerable adoptive son, goes in regardless. If he thought he was going to be fine, then there is exactly 0 reason to not have clark do it because there's no way clark'd reveal any powers if old man kent could do it with his old human body). 4. All kryptonian outposts die out because krypton exploded...? so why would making another outpost on earth change anything, they literally say in the movie the outposts need krypton. They even took the terraforming machines from a dead planet that like earth, would fail without krypton for some reason. so on and so forth. He knew what Superman would choose and what it would force him to do. It left him with no option but to be merciless which is something the Kryptonians said they could do without hesitation. That anguished scream was Superman facing an awful truth.
People complaining about the destruction of Metropolis: Clark had never faced a threat of this magnitude before becoming Superman. The Kryptonians are his equals in strength, speed, and powers; going up against them is not like stopping a robbery or rescuing somebody falling from a tall building. Couple that with the fact that Zod’s actively trying to eliminate Kal and the human race, the only solution was to fight fire with fire. The Kryptonian invasion was meant to raise the stakes for Clark and the challenges he’d have to overcome in the future as Superman

I can understand why Superman screams at the end of the fight, since he just killed the last being of his kind besides him, and this is heavy, it's like killing the last member of your own family, besides you obviously
I think it was because he didn't want to take a live no matter how evil it was. he pleaded with him to stop, but Zod refused, in truth Zod was a product, an example of why krypton was doomed. he didn't care about the consequences of him reshaping earth, or how what it would do to the human race. He only thought of his people and had no moral restrictions!!
He screamed because he didn't have a choice, he knew that Zod was genetically created for the sole purpose of serving & defending krypton, Kal KNEW that no matter what, Zod would stop at nothing. On top of that, he needed to end it anyway because Zod kept getting stronger at a extremely fast rate, it wouldn't have been long before Zod would have been slaughtering Supes.
I say this as a superhero fan. If you go and read the comics, you will notice that the writers have gone to absurd lengths to ensure that superheroes never kill. The characters will always say stuff like “there’s always a choice” or “There’s always another way”. Then the characters will just pull the third option out of thin air. Two person who has godlike power fight each other, the one who wants to destroy and wants to protect and you expect there will be no casualties? Are you crazy? Even hulk vs abomination there are lots of casualties on Avengers age of ultron there are lots of casualties on Sokovia. You always Blame superman for the destruction and deaths and yet you didn't even have the brain to recognize the true villain which is Zod who cause it all, he is the one destroying the buildings killing the people and you expect superman to just save or carry people while zod is aggressively punching him imagine kid he is carrying a person with him and Zod is punching him! “The only one way this goes down is either you die or I die” that was kinda bad like first of all that’s 2 ways and like I don’t think it was necessary to say that anyway.
Personally I’m a Christopher Reeves man, mostly because me and my dad used to watch his movies when I was a kid, so I guess that’s why i didn’t like this movie as much
Gotta say, I actually loved this scene. Zod was broken completely. He was basically trying to get Superman to kill him because he had lost all purpose in life. He didn't want to kill senselessly or sadistically, but he literally had nothing left.
When they crash out from space, Zod clearly still have strenght to fight but let it go. He just push his death a bit faster by force Superman to make a choice which Zod knew clearly what he gonna pick.
You sir need to be pinned and hearted by this channel, because you are absolutely rights, can you imagine if you were in the same position, being bred to be a savior to a deceased planet only for it to never return?

@@vicatturri2547i dont think clark was superman for much time
@vicatturri2547 I don't know though. We saw her charging herself up. I think overall Superman is just a much more powerful being than her
I’d say it was a very close call between Superman and Zod.

I'm surprised the entire city wasn't leveled to the ground.
kryptonians.
kryptonite is their weakness.
Critics and some of Snyder's haters wanted a copy paste of Christopher reeves superman and they cannot accept that Snyder made the difference
Seriously, how on fucking earth was this masterpiece so underrated is beyond me
Ahead of it's time.
It's visually engaging, but it's woefully lacking in substance and is full of contradictions. It's not a bad movie, but what I can't stand is the insanity of MoS/BvS/watchmen fans that feel compelled to strawman people who dislike those movies and praise things that are incredibly mundane.

Pedro Rodriguez III you said right here bro.

That's exactly the reason I don't like this movie. Zod's death scene would have been perfect if Superman was actively trying to save people which makes his internal conflict better. Zod represents what people think of Superman, but he should be trying to prove that such omnipotence can be used for good. Zod being killed would be what seals it, but instead he fucks around killing thousands of people for the sake of the fight and the random family just seems like the most basic of tools for tension. immortal gods punching each other, killing innocents and then Superman saves a random family because he good and the other baddie.
