    Tom, this is such an excellent breakdown of the joints and what they SHOULD do on moguls. And I’ll tell you, it’s the COMPLETE opposite of what I’ve been told to do during ski lessons! I was curling up and taking all of the dice to my lower back. I can’t wait to give this a try on the slopes this winter! ⛷

    hi im a mogul coach for Squaw Valley. the info is outstanding. lots of times we say eyes up head up straight back etc.. but your breakdown of the body mechanics make huge sense and i will try to bring that to my coaching because i have some arheletes who are still hunched over and dont ski tall yet thanks

    For years we have been taught to keep the back rounded in an effort to engage the abs, and this may work just fine for recreational skiing on greens and blues. When we ski in varied terrain we actually need to maintain a strong upper body skeleton. Your demos show this very well.

    Great information and brilliant skiing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Take no notice of any critical comments on this page as those people are either trolling or have no knowledge of skiing moguls. Thanks again and would love to see more of your mogul skiing.

    I thanked you in 2017 when I found this detailed drill. This video was the catalyst for my improvement in the moguls and essentially helped me to become a much better all round skier. Today I was organizing my ski conditioning links folder and watched it again. I have seen several teachers address this more recently. Everyone has a different spin on it and of course so do I. I am glad I did because my thinking about how to stay over my skis or recover from my weight moving back had me focusing more on pulling my feet back after absorbing. The body mechanics here are right on and it's been a great refresher. I will spend more time practicing the alignment and knee drop before I hit the slopes again, so thanks again! (and for all the other videos too!!)

    Excellent job !! ... one of the best I have seen on how your body should work in order to ski with performance !! Great explanation on alignment / work in the gym to ski on the snow ! At the end of the day, skiing is trying to get balance against gravity and uneven terrain !!

    I didn't understand a single bit until I practice on the moguls for a few more weekends. I still cannot say I get all your points. Thanks a lot for sharing!!

      emax - That is par for the course! This explanation is extremely sophisticated. It will take me awhile to integrate for sure( and I have taught skiing for over 20 years). I have worked on some of the same ideas in walking, running, standing and sitting, for the last three years! I still am discovering new distinctions in movement patterns. You did well to at least try to understand and practice these new movements and postures . Keep at it, and you will learn more and more!

    This video is awsome mate really helpful, Im 51 now but was freestyle ski team member in the 80s for years and at that time copped a bad back injury. I have compressed 2 disks either side of a lower vertebrae, L4 or 5 i think, which is also partially compressed so as you can imagine a lifetime of back probs. In recent years its gotten really bad and i re injured it last year working. Its now not only pinching the siatic nerve but also pinching off vital main blood supply to my legs so now at this stage i can only walk a short distance and am in extreme pain not from nerves, my excersizes seem to be helping with the siatica, but pain from muscle oxygen starvation if i try to do anything athletic i get the leg muscle pain that normally takes ages. Being an ex team member and avid skier I feel like a cripple. Ive been to the best sports and ski specific doctor i could find in Sydney here and he hasnt been able to help me but slowly just using careful excersize im improving but still have this blood flow prob to legs well more specifically oxygen supply to legs so they burm out in seconds.
    This video is amazing ive never heard anyone ever talk about core alignment like that and how if your pelvis doesnt rotate you load your lower back, thats exactly what ive done since i was 15 i am tall aswell and have a rounded bad back anyway. I cant wait to implement your fundimentals into my body movement and mechanics im sure it will unload my back heaps maybe even to the point of restoring blood flow to legs. The only thing that has helped had big positive effect so far is swimming doing some laps seems to stretch and excersize it and its much better after. If you have some suggestions for rehab excersizes for me to increase blood flow to legs please id love to hear from you. Aside from the spine injury atm scan shows a small node sort of in the little hole in the pelvis where the siatic nerve and artery passes through wich also may be impeding the movement of said nerve and artery back and forth when hip rotates .oops raved on a bit here but am exited about these fundimentals ive just learnt thanks again for the awsome video ive subscribed ,,,

    Good instruction- I bend forward too much at the waist. Bone spurs in the knee from arthritis don't allow me to bend much past 100 degrees, so I think I do some compensating, but still think I can improve my position in moguls. Thanks

    Man this is great information, thank you! When the pelvic bone is tilted forward does this create a curvature of the spine in the lower back? Meaning the load of the mogul impact in the spine not evenly carried? What would differ say in not tilting pelvic bone forward but lifting chest and head. Hope I don't come across as being critical, just curious. Thanks I cant wait to get the mountain and play with this.Some tips for dynamic mediums would be cool :)Cheers!

    Working myself on mastering moguls. 54 y/o female with SI joint issues-currently working on rehab to reduce chronic back pain from driving/sitting in office. Is the movement you describe like doing a hip hinge? Bending at the hips to push pubic bone down and squat, then squeezing butt cheeks to extend and lift? This is an exercise I am doing to modify how I bend to pick things up to keep strain off of the low back. Thoughts? I do like how you break everything down. Those verbal cues are helpful. I am also a PSIA Level 1 Instructor working on my Level 2 Certification.

    I just changed to twin tip centre mount skis to work on my jumps more ...but now I seem to catch the back outer edge on moguls constantly . Think it will just take time to get used to new position.

      Make sure your downhill ski crests the mogul top before turning.

  • @andresfernandezm2070

    Overly complex explanation of something much more simple, just imagine you have a ski pole that enters thru the top of your helmet and out thru your a-hole, if you have a strait back you can only absorb the impact of the bump with your legs. There!

  • @bryonfiske392

    the guy is clueless
    see tips launch off top of each mogul that means absorption is late

    • @CECS1
      @CECS1 8 лет назад +1

      +bryon fiske I see an effective retraction movement to keep the COM over the base of support, and a quite and stable core that faces down the fall line....not sure where you are seeing a "late" reaction, if indeed he was late, there would be a serious throwing and deflection in a new and absurd direction uncontrolled

    • @CECS1
      @CECS1 8 лет назад

      +bryon fiske Perhaps at 10:30 he could be more proactive in driving the tips down into the snow, possibly his COM was a bit delayed in being carried down the hill.
      I do also see the upper body absorbing slightly more than the lower body, but overall a very strong use of flexion and extension to manage pressure and directional control

    • @phillyskidog1
      @phillyskidog1 7 лет назад +1

      His late reaction would be the fact he is bobbing his upper body and head once he hits the "trough" of the mogul. This guys back and neck will be sore AF if he skied like this for any extended period of time. He is also not driving his tips down the back of the mogul as affectively as he could making it look like he is bouncing his way through the moguls. Watch any World cup mogul comp to see how moguls should be skied, not a guy who talks about how to ski them and only shows a 15 second clip of himself not skiing them as he preaches. My credentials: 5 years active competitor, 2 years coaching, 20 years judging

      phillyskidog1 I agree to much on the back of the skis. Not out over the front letting the skis carve and turn. His techniques seems to bent over. Has way to much upper body movement.
