Cheers for the video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard about - Schallingora Information Investigation Scheme (google it)? It is an awesome one off guide for learning what you need to say to get hired in a job interview minus the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got great success with it.
Brilliant - also another tip about ‘smile like you’re loving this!’ I heard someone once describe the importance of smiling naturally.. and they held up their drivers license to the camera and said, “would you rather hire THIS person?’ - then she pulled it down and we saw her smile naturally and warmly, ‘or would you rather hire THIS person?’
I would also advise to turn the computer on and leave it running for at least 2 hours in case there are any updates, windows updates, firewall etc that require rebooting.
So when I was in corporate I frowned upon this, but now I would use video interviewing all the time. It saves me hassle and lets me vet people in advance.
GREAT tips, Andy! Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. :) Logitech 922 Webcam that Andy's using = plenty good. I have the same webcam. Set it up (software) prior to going "live" with it. Keep the built-in software filters to a minimum, as it will cause additional lag. Try to create the video lighting/color you want naturally, if at all possible. His tips for freeing up memory & speed to keeping your computer from lagging = priceless! Rewind. Listen again. Make notes. He breezed through several important things that many may not have considered before. AUDIO: Andy uses an Audio Technica condenser in front of him, but used to use a clip-on "lapel" condenser mic (he mentioned the wires hanging down, which are for in-ear monitoring of what's going on). Either works great, but if you listen to Andy's older videos compared to these.. the audio is much richer, fuller, louder, cleaner. Here's a cheap, affordable solution if your computer's mic isn't hitting on much. RUclipsrs swear by it. The Blue Snowball ICE = $50 on Amazon. You won't need a pop-filter or extras as long as your mouth is approx. 1 ft or more away from the mic. Well worth the investment. If you use a mic like this, make sure to TURN OFF the mic playing back through your speakers (or turn it way down, as to stop feedback). The only thing you want playing back through the speakers is the other person (the interviewer). Andy's SKYPE CALL practice = absolutely essential before a big web interview.

Andy, fantastic tips on how to do a video interview. These types of interviews are becoming so popular. They are pretty nerve wrecking too. I LOVE your flash cards btw!
@Professor Heather Austin - Nerve-wrecking indeed. Aren't the flash cards dandy? I had a little fun at Andy's expense over those in this (full) session, but actually think it's a great idea. Back to "roots" when it comes to retention. :) I hope you are doing well, also!
Great tips as usual. Job seekers really need to study up on your content!! I agree that the looking down can be distracting - and also when people aren't looking at the camera. Cheers!
Andrew thanks for the tips a lot of it is basic but I think a lot of times we forget the basics and all interviews In the current environment I've done over some kind of interactive web session thanks
A great video overall. Just a couple of additional thoughts: Although in this video you’ve used some lighting for your face, I would suggest not speaking in front of a window like this. Some cameras will actually try to autofocus on your background so the distance between where you are and what’s behind you should be quite short. An additional tip I would have included is for people to test their sound. I just did two room tests and found one to have a lot of echo. As well, I would not suggest a built in computer mic, as the sound quality may be horrible, especially a built in laptop mic.
Thanks man, this is super helpful. I have to record a 2 minute video answering to questions to send in after today for a game design company since I am a 3d Artist and I admit I am super nervous but so excited and wanting it.
I just did my first on-demand video conference (Montage). It literally took me about 10 hours to complete. I was able to re-record unlimited times so that was a life saver. It's very non personal. The only benefit I can see for this is for the hiring manager can view you anytime they want. It doesn't save money as it didn't cost anything for employers to interview in the first place. It does however eliminate the job seekers cost for travel and perhaps an outfit. It actually cost the company money to buy the software. I'm not a big fan of talking to yourself in your phone or laptop. A RUclips star I am not!
Any advice or tips on how to approach the increasingly popular "test project" that many companies are now giving during the interview process? (I.e. they send you real-world scenarios as a test to demonstrate your capability for the job.) Thanks!
At 13:25 mark: Does this also apply to darker complexion individuals? Or does wearing white/lighter colors still have a negative effect on the camera regardless of skin tone?
Great timing, Andy. Thanks SO much. So when you look at the camera and start talking, it feels a little unnatural because you see them in your peripheral vision, right? You're not actually looking AT the person...) Thanks again for being such a voice of calm during this "CV19" time. I wish you and your team (and everyone!) all the TP you need at your next trip to the store. :)
What's ailing my job search is peer sabotage. I recently went on an interview with the person I would be replacing. She was promoted to an EA to support the Senior VP which left her position open. At one point in the interview, she said, "wow, you do have a lot of experience"? I felt, I did a really good interview and she just confirmed it. After, getting the dear John no thank you email I started thinking about what I could have done wrong. My experience is where I should have been the Senior VP's EA not her and she got threatened. I have had this happen to me in the past too. So, corporations are not getting the best candidates at all and the peers have no interviewing skills whatsoever and hold all the power. It's very discouraging to me. Is there anyway around doing peer interviews? I think it's the hiring manager and HR being lazy. The issue is, how do I get a job when I have to interview with my peers?
Andrew, thank-you very must for providing such great content and tips. I utilized the eye contact tip today in a Video Interview and felt like it was a major contributing to getting an offer at the end of the interview. Thank-you again! Keep being great!
When you said "the telly" I thought you meant "the television", which is funny, because some of my family used to call the phone the "tele" (in Spanish) so I'm surprised I didn't make that connection!
Great video with great insights. I like to stand up rather than sit on chair. what is your advice? I can show more of my energy and personality if stand up. Thanks in advance.
I have 5 video interviews coming up where I will go to one of their corporate offices, but all the interviews will be done over video and they are back to back with a lunch break. I'm not sure what the set up will be - I assume it is ok for me to have notes even if they can see them? I will be the last to interview as other candidates interviewed in person - they were flown in but I couldn't do that as I was out of the country that week. Any tips for me besides what you said in your video? I will wear black or navy so thanks for that advice.
@@andylacivita indeed I much prefer face to face real in person interviews. Companies used to fly candidates into the office for interviews. Now they want to cut costs and save on the hiring process.
Let’s reframe. Imagine the job interviews that never took place because the two people were not in the same city/country. It takes some getting used to, but rather than look backwards, let’s look forwards.
Hi Andrew! I have a one-way interview I have to complete by a certain date. This is the first interview of this type I have ever done, and i'm not really sure how to go about it. I've done Skype interviews before, but the one-way interview is a new thing for me. I am supposed to use a link they provide and answers to timed questions that are recorded through video/audio. There are no people on the other end. Do you have any insight for this type of interview? Thank you very much! Dustin
Dustin, and I’m not being funny here, literally pretend you are explaining yourself to a person. These are terrible mediums to do this and I abhor when companies do this because an interview should be a two way street.
Thank you for the reply Andrew. Yes I thought this was a rather interesting way of interviewing as well, and i'm not a fan of it. However, on the other hand, I have another interview coming up that is a phone screen. I've always dealt with interviews that were only one round. So there was always just one interview, and then you get a call, that's it. This is the first phone screen interview I've had, meaning I will have round 2 or 3 interviews later on down the road if I pass this one. Any tips on phone interviews? Will they be able to tell if I have a cheat sheet in front of me? Do you have a video focused on phone interviews? Thank you so much for your advice!
@@andylacivita yeah I've just been asked to do one of these after already going through a phone screening. Great video. Need a little help. I have a very first video interview coming up that is pursuant to an initial interview with a recruiter. If this one goes okay, an in-person interview will follow so I was wondering how I should dress for the video interview. Isn't a suit and tie too much since the video interview itself is somewhat an informal technique?
Eddie Lee Eddie, great question. Dress nicely but not over the top. A button down like the one I’m wearing in the video or something clean like that is perfect.
???? Hello, Andy thanks as always.... as for dress code for a business Zoom would you wear a shirt or a solid shirt and a jacket especially when you are interviewing with a Director vs someone of mid-level. thoughts, please..
😂 you get my meaning! If you want the crush the interview no matter what kind it is, check the interview playlist. Good luck Levana. I know you’ll do well!!
Video Interviews are STUPID DISCRIMATORY and very PREJUDGING. This is why everybody is staring at phones now instead of actually communicating. Companies wanna see how you live and judge you based on your environment.
Great video Andy. These tips are really helpful for video interviews ..and yes need to remember to put the dog in his crate! :-) Thank you for sharing!
@@andylacivita I enjoyed it! I also used your PPO method of responding to behavioral questions and I got a job offer less than 24 hours later! Thank you for your simple but effective advice!
Hi Andy, I've been working on listing my accomplishments into the 'Career Achievements Journal' template that you provided and it is AWESOME. Would it be appropriate to refer to this list for inspiration during the interview (not reading from it but referencing for appropriate stories to answer the questions)? My employer exclusively uses Performance Based Interviewing, with all candidates asked the exact same questions. I get nervous and my mind goes blank when asked these questions as they are complex, multi-part, and often difficult to decipher what they are truly needing. I am studying the questions and my stories but would like to have a safety net if it would not detract from my competence. :)
Karen! Glad you liked it!! Heck yes!! That what you should be using for. 1. To capture your accomplishments. 2. To our that detail in your resume. 3. To tell your stories in your interview. Btw. If you have not watched my free webinar 3 secrets to get your resume notice, watch it. The giveaway is my resume content builder. In addition to the journaling part, you get the resume template, instructions how to fill it in and the topic areas you should cover in each section. Enjoy!!
DkGsolowing 7 I wouldn’t recommend it. Internet issues could arise but it could be distraction to the other person as well depending on what’s happening around you.
Thanks Herman, no make up for me! In a ditch effort, I grabbed my wife's powder one time when I was going on Television and I had a shiny face from the light. LOL.
I miss the old days of looking for a job. Nothing beats a paper application and a phone call, that leads to a face to face interview. This whole digital process and these video interviews are dehumanizing and disgraceful. A background check is one thing, but the whole hiring process through machines or empty video interviews is just disrespectful and rude!
It's not one or the other though? You can certainly send in a paper application via the post. Whether or not you run into a virtual office is another issue in its self of course but for the most part, traditional means are always viable. Practical? Probably not. Email - Brief introduction, how you can help, CV, Book free call, connect on Linkedin. I mean, by all means, keep things traditional, but it is incredibly slow and tedious. Great way to stand out if you're a stand out guy!
Great tips, I've got 3 MS Teams interviews upcoming hope to pass with all of them, there were elements in your video i had not thought about, put camera on eye height level and wearing dark shirts (I was always wearing white shirts). I definitely agree with your arguments thanks for these tips.
DON'T do that. I am a hiring manager, and I have severe allergies and just because you think it smells good doesn't mean that it won't be offensive to someone else. Keep it simple. No strong smells! I haven't hired someone for too much makeup, too loud cologne or coming in looking unkept.

???? Hello, Andy thanks as always.... as for dress code for a business Zoom would you wear a shirt or a solid shirt and a jacket especially when you are interviewing with a Director vs someone of mid-level. thoughts, please..
solid always when on camera.
Wonder if i would be more nervous on camera or in person with video. Both sound tough. Your videos are good. You speak well
Go live Ali!
Andy, what model is your microphone? You mentioned Audiotechnica, and Im looking at options, thanks!
It's an AT2020.
Thank you that's very informative and helpful!
You're soooo welcome Andrew!
Tip #1: Go watch all other of my 400 videos.

😂 you get my meaning! If you want the crush the interview no matter what kind it is, check the interview playlist. Good luck Levana. I know you’ll do well!!
This is good stuff- my last few interviews for jobs were all video based.
Renaissance Man Benny’s back!
Thank you so much for this.
You are so welcome!
LOL. :)
Thanks
You’re welcome!
I'd be really interested on the analytics of this video recently, I'm sure it took a giant leap in views.
Surprisingly it's not taken off. :-( But, all I care about is that YOU found it and enjoyed it.
My perceived competency, that is! ;)
Enjoy!!
Thanks Andy! Can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate you ❤️.
Yes, Karen, I'm feelin' the LOVE!!! :)
Is it ever okay to bring your past performance reviews to an interview to offer the interviewer?
S C no need to bring them. :)
One question. If I talk to the camera, I may miss their facial expression when I talk, which I think is also very important. Any suggestions?
I’d still do it. You’ll catch their busy language when they’re talking.
Brilliant!
What if you do the interview inside your car? Would that be ok or no?
Would not recommend that. A room with very little distractions or noise and a blank wall if possible is best
DkGsolowing 7 I wouldn’t recommend it. Internet issues could arise but it could be distraction to the other person as well depending on what’s happening around you.
Great tips for video interviews. I get rid the shiny spot on my forehead...what makeup do you use?
Thanks Herman, no make up for me! In a ditch effort, I grabbed my wife's powder one time when I was going on Television and I had a shiny face from the light. LOL.
Hey! Andrew LaCivita
I attended the video webinar on August 20th, 2018.
How do I get those free e-books or printed ones with paid shipping?
Here you go! www.milewalkacademy.com/p/free-hardcover-copy-of-interview-intervention
I’ve just done my video interview today. Omg i was so nervous and a big failed for me.
Hang in there Emily. You got this!!
It’s Just practice, I totally bombed my first interview 🤣
Should I not wear my glasses to avoid glare etc.?
You can wear them.
Okay, thank you.
Last part your audio wasn't working?
It's supposed to cut out like that!
Ow.. hahahaha.. I thought my internet was having an issue that it's not loading the last bit =p
KYROS CELL SIRUV lololol
Very helpful! Thank you so very much. 👏🏽🙌🏽👍🏽😉😁
You’re welcome!
Thank u
Glad you liked it!
What is Ethernet? How do I get it?
Simply using a connection (cord) to the internet rather than wireless.
Would a go pro be a good camera?
Antonio Ortega hey Antonio, I’ve seen them but haven’t used one. Honestly, your webcam should be good enough.
Andrew produces 5 star videos. (I'm talking about content.)
Thanks much.
Like if you're here because of The Rona!
Sorry to hear that Cynthia but I’m glad I could help those who need it!!
Thank you so much, I should have seen this sooner. How would you go about asking for their email? ( how would you phrase it?)
Just ask. no need to overthink it.
What usually the questions they asked in a video interview?
The same ones they ask in face to face interviews.
😂😂😂😂
@@Dj_amazing that wasn't a dumb question.
Is it okay to wear college cap for hirevue video interviews? My hair looks very bad and I'd like to cover. Thank you
deep gee I wouldn’t suggest it.
All this sh!t just to put food on the table and roof over your head. How insulting. 😔
Get a hustle...start your your own..
Great tips, I've got 3 MS Teams interviews upcoming hope to pass with all of them, there were elements in your video i had not thought about, put camera on eye height level and wearing dark shirts (I was always wearing white shirts). I definitely agree with your arguments thanks for these tips.
One tip frm my side = put on your favorite perfume, trust me it definitely helps you reduce stress and gets you less nervous.
I love that! Thanks!
DON'T do that. I am a hiring manager, and I have severe allergies and just because you think it smells good doesn't mean that it won't be offensive to someone else. Keep it simple. No strong smells! I haven't hired someone for too much makeup, too loud cologne or coming in looking unkept.
