Martial law basically means letting the military take over everything the government usually does. It was bad because the law was declared in the middle of the night and without proper explanation as to why. No wonder everyone is pissed

Basically martial law means the military takes control over the entire country. It's really bad

Martial law: replacement of civilian government by military rule and the suspension of civilian legal processes for military powers.
And that would be effective immediately as soon as martial law was declared. Usually this only happens when a country is in danger such as during terrorist attack, uprising or war. Even though Korean War hasn't technically ended, this declaration was very shocking since they've been maintaining a fairly peaceful "truce" for decades. It's like their president is intentionally putting their country at risk for no reason at all.
That's why it is a big deal.
