Fighting the good fight against ALS

  • Brian Wallach has beaten the odds after being diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease). Given six months to live, remarkably he has survived six years. During that time, he and his wife Sandra have lobbied for funds for promising drugs and treatments. Two years after first meeting Wallach in 2021, correspondent Lee Cowan revisits with him to find out how he and his grassroots organization I Am ALS helped pass a law (Act for ALS) funding more than $100 million a year for five years for various ALS initiatives, and why Wallach himself is hopeful for the future.

My husband’s doctor refused to come to our house to see him when he could no longer safely leave our house. He was connected to so many machines, it was impossible. ALS took him but I still resent the medical profession that cited rules about security.

My brother-in-law was diagnosed with ALS in 2019. He passed away in 2021. His illness progressed very quickly. He never complained. I was so fortunate to stay with him and my sister for the last year and a half of his life, and witness how he handled his life with such grace. ❤️. Your dedication to helping and pushing for the medication so desperately needed is truly selfless and inspiring. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🤗❤️

Thanks for not referring to ALS as "Lou Gehrig's Disease, " even though I see it in the episode notes. Now that there is a medically accurate term--ALS, it's time to retire his namesake moniker because several generations have no idea who Lou Gehrig was, and he should be remembered for his exploits on the baseball diamond instead of having the bad luck to have come down with a disease that would be named after him.

Both Brian's and Chris' stories are inspiring. In fact, we need a new word for inspiring after watching this. There are so many diseases that not only rob people of their lives but steal their dignity as well during prolonged suffering. ALS is an especially cruel one. I had a close family member pass away from ALS several years ago. I know firsthand what this terrible affliction can do.
Science inevitably will beat ALS. I remain optimistic of this after watching this touching video.
