I find those actors fascinating who can play wimps and tough guys without drastically changing their look like a Gary Oldman or Rick James. Couple things I noticed watching this episode again. 1st the parable of the scorpion and the frog was an interesting choice. When you imagine a scorpion and a frog what comes to mind is of course the scorpion kills the frog with his deadly stinger. But in the parable the frog is giving the scorpion a “ride” on his back over a river. In the deepest part of the river the scorpion stings the frog and they both drown in the river. The moral is we can’t change our nature even if we try. I think the metaphor for the Sopranos is Tony will never change. He is content to destroy anyones life for monetary gain. But at the same time Tony is also drowning because his nature not only destroys others but himself and his family as well. 2nd thing I noticed was the final scene of the episode where Tony and AJ are driving the Stugots in the harbor. Tony guns the engine and 2 men in a small fishing boat are thrown out of the boat from the boat’s waves. Here Tony literally destroys people who are in his wake. His actions touch so many people that he unintentionally destroys peoples lives with his actions even if it’s unintentional.
I think if there was going to be a real ending. Davy would be the one to pull the trigger on Tony. It would be totally unexpected. David goes away for 6 years, established a new life out west, has all the motive. It would have been quite the ending.
Even if Dave Scatino had a winning night at the executive game, he would have had the same fate at the end. They would have either kept playing with him until he started losing knowing that he couldn't resist or cheated him some other way.
They wouldn’t need to cheat him out. If Dave leaves a winner. He will come back to play. The end is the same. It’s just a matter of time.
He will win, come back and be killed by Richie or Ralphie for owing them money or beating them in Poker.
