    Just to let you know, and it is only what I have been told as I am a "Newbie" at growing sweet potatoes, you are not supposed to wash them right away and you should put them in a shady spot to dry out and cure for a few days. Also I have been told that sweet potatoes don't become"sweet" until a couple of weeks after harvest. Like I said, I am new to this so , don't shoot the pigeon, I am only passing on what I have been told. Anyway, good luck, hope you enjoy your harvest, you have a great crop there. Take care and stay safe, Sandie from Ontario Canada.

    What a gorgeous harvest. I wonder what kind of tea you could make from the thin smaller roots? Also, my mom taught me to plant the potatoes in the bottom, once the plant flowers, add more dirt to cover. Continue this until the end of the season. When you dump your bucket, you should have layers of potatoes.

    • @aquilaclark814

      Thelma Edwards Poole Hi.. I tried that in my backyard I had a garden spot in backyard..they did nothing..I did much better any gigantic landscape pots ..you can get them free where they’re putting in apartment complexes or re landscaping..they are at the dumpsters piled up..I had a nice harvest from those big pots ..but putting my slips under the leaves didn’t do anything..It could have been the gigantic tree that shades my garden I don’t get very much sun ..
      that’s why I have to plant in the middle of the yard in pots..

    • @katlynnsmith7547
      @katlynnsmith7547 5 лет назад +7

      Lori Sanford It’s very easy. Go to the grocery store and look in the organic section of the produce department. Select the type of sweet potato or yam you want to grow. Be sure that the tater is organic and has a decent number of dimples (those will be the eyes). You grow the slips by putting sections of the selected tater in containers of water, using skewers or toothpicks to suspend the sections. You can also search “sweet potato slips” here on RUclips to have it fully demonstrated. It’s insanely easy and fun too. Good luck!

    • @theblessedone9700
      @theblessedone9700 4 года назад +6

      @@katlynnsmith7547, it was not getting enough Sun & wet soil. It needs loose soil. Water less often & just enough amount of water. The ground must be well drain off. Tree leaves are one of the best plant nutrients feed. You must keep adding the Leaves when they breaks down & dried up. If you plant in pot it must be wide & at just 1.5 foots deep. Drill lots of medium size holes. Place slips 2 foots a part to get a better shape, single, & more yeild. Lot of plant foods & fertized at least once a month. Place plant food & fertizer in between the spacing. Gave each slip equal amount of both plant feeds. If use the ground you have to place metal screen on all sides including the top surfaces. Squirrels & other ground diggers will eats all your havest if not. It takes 5 to 6 months to grow before harvesting. It loves the Sun with at least 12 hours. All day sunshine. If you have land do composing. Use all your Kitchen wastes. As for Egg shelves wash off the Whites & Yokes clean. Then dried off & crumble them before adding to compost pile.

    The ideal container will be shallow and flat not bucket so that the twigs can crawl and produce more SP because thats what the twigs want and the SP want to feel the sun so they stay on top of the bucket. Ideally or the best is plant them on the ground with a mixture of rough Sand and coconut husk shredded and compost; see how much harvest you'll have next time.

    I like your correlation to the digging for dinosaurs. So true. With all those vines you could've gotten tons more potatoes if you had kept burying them. Did you ever see the guy who planted just a few of them in a long narrow patch? He just kept burying the vines and they grew all along them, and he got I think several hundred pounds of potatoes!
    My first sweet potatoes had roots growing through the drain holes and produced potatoes in the ground below. I had to dig them out. So seeing what you did, I'll have to put some netting at the bottom of my pots to prevent that from happening. : )

      Ok here's his video. I was mistaken on the weight, but still pretty impressive...I want to do the same thing myself, only in 5 gal buckets.

      Yes, it is. Too bad it takes soooo long....6 month. For the next year we will try to grow some "regular" potatoes, that you cant find at the store. I want to try blue Peruvien and German white potatoes. Baked pumpkin kasha with apples is yummy.
