    I think that all the plants that have been rescued must be very lucky and happy afterwards. Thank you for your kindness :)

    just picked up a rescue birds nest fern from lowe’s yesterday! have been wanting one for a while (the curly baby leaves in the middle are just so cute) and for only $1, I couldn’t resist. mine looks just like yours did in the first couple clips. hoping it bounces back as quickly as yours! thanks for the video, it’s exactly what i was looking for. :)

    $3?! You got robbed!
    I also rescue sad plants from the “hardware store” & scored a super haul yesterday.
    Majesty palm x2 @ $5 each then $1 each for an anthurium & the asplenium nida.
    Full price for these would have approached $100.
    Plant rescue allows me to satisfy my green addiction with varieties of plants that otherwise my budget would not permit.

    mine looked just like this, when u repotted did u break up the root ball? I lost some roots and repottted in a 1 part perlite 1part potting soil for drainage, I feel like I was too rough with it :-(

      @SuburbanSill  4 года назад

      I think you’ll be ok. I’ll have to go back and look. If I remember correctly I tried to wet it really good and get some of the dirt off and loosen the roots. I’m sure I lost some too. I doubt you were too rough. I had a Dracaena with root rot once and cut back tons of roots and it recovered.

    Hi. My plant isn’t looking good. Leaves are bent/droopy and look burnt and dry. Can I repot using miracle gro potting soil? Need some advice. Thanks.

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  4 года назад

      Sure...when was the last time you repotted? All purpose mix works fine, just make sure it drains well.

    hi! my birds nest has some droopy leafs and the newest ones are about 12 feet and they're yellowing and thin, not hard like a healthy leaf should be. I haven't pattered it since I bought it. the leafs are all beginning to droop but I'm not sure what to do if I'm being honest because this sounds like root rot. can you help please?

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  5 лет назад +1

      Maybe dump it out and see what is going on under the soil. It sounds like maybe over watering. Check the roots and let it dry out and it just might bounce back. Also, when you water, try and keep water out of the center of the plant or the “nest” this could be damaging the new leaves. Keep me posted!

    I have a second small birds nest fern that has stopped growing. When I bought it, it looked lush and had green frond buds visible in the center. It now has dried up in the center, no new growth, and the lower leaves are yellowing. I have read that the center should never be watered as it will rot and that it is an "air plant" that needs little water. I took it out of its pot and saw that the soil was soaked. I let it dry out some and then applied small amounts of water. I see you apply water liberally! I am confused about what to do to have a birds nest fern succeed! Can you help?

      I had mine outside in the heat so I had to water it more. I have now moved it indoors and I will pull back watering a lot. You are right, they are sort of like airplants in that they sometimes grow epiphytically. Let it dry out, maybe repot it in some orchid mix or cactus mix...something quick drying that will let the water drain freely and only water it when the soil is dry. Make sure your pot has good drainage holes. Do you have a water meter? That might help you check the soil.

      @@SuburbanSill Thank you so much. I will repot. I have a water meter and will use it to water carefully. I really appreciate your response and a fast one, too!! I hope that new fronds will develop. Should I fertilize next spring and if so, what do you use?

    Hi, what kind of light did you keep your birds nest fern in? What are it’s light requirements?

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  4 года назад +1

      Right now it’s in a medium to bright light and does fine. During the video I had it outside as I was trying to revive it, but it now lives indoors and does just fine. Bright to medium indirect light works well.

    Do you ever prune the burnt leaves? I have a birds nest fern that got a little too much sun on accident and was wondering if i should just leave the burnt leaves on or cut them off?

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  4 года назад

      Yes I do. When they are totally spent I cut them off at the base.

      I foolishly had mine in full sun. Lots of burnt leaves. I moved it indoors.
      I'm debating if I cut the burnt leaves off at the base...or if I trim them to look like they're just shorter leaves.
      I'm gonna just let it recover for a week then trim and repot.
      Thanks for this video...helped me think mine has a chance!
