    The important thing to remember with Korra as a person is she grew up hearing the stories of the 100 Year War, she was trained as the Avatar from a young age, she would've been taught and drilled over and over about what happens to the world WITHOUT an Avatar, how Aang being gone caused the 100 Year War and nearly destroyed the world in war and conquest. So you have to take that into account, she's headstrong and she really wants to be a fully realized Avatar and take up that role... because she's been raised all her life to be terrified of a world without an Avatar, she thinks if she fails or can't do it the world will fall out of balance into destruction again. So she's arrogant, headstrong, impulsive... but it comes from a good place in my opinion. She doesn't want to make the mistake Aang made, that's her greatest fear in my opinion, leaving the world without an Avatar.

    • @hyperdeath84
      @hyperdeath84 7 лет назад +113

      Fordo007 One of the big aspects of Korra's character is that she is defined by being the Avatar and has to really learn who Korra is as a person regardless of her position and duties. I quite like how she embraces the role and genuinely tries to help but fucks up along the way. I think she is quite a lot like Zuko in that regard.

    • @billytessio6326
      @billytessio6326 7 лет назад +71

      The White Lotus' fault in my opinion. The avatar must travel the world, learn about different people from different nations, discovering new aspects of themselves in the process, therefore growing as a person. Korra didn't get any of that, hence why she is so ill-prepared to face her enemies. The White Lotus raised her to be a weapon without any regard for the different societies each with their own political and social complexities. She can't fathom being anything but the avatar. SPOILERS*********: Yes the Red Lotus tried to capture her, but that still doesn't excuse the Whites locking her up in a compound even though they were all imprisoned. She still should've been able to see the world and learn things for herself.
      Aang, when we reached the end of his series, was told by everybody that he must kill the firelord to fulfill his duties as the avatar. He understood that he is the avatar, but he knew that's not all he is. He is a person with choice and reason at the end of it all.

      @hyperdeath84 7 лет назад +40

      mitchhamilton64 Yeah, there's no hint that Korra lets the title of "Avatar" define her at all is there? I must have imagined [SPOILERS] the end of book 1 when she ran off to a cliff's edge crying because she thought she was worthless without the bending powers she defined herself with and devastated at not being able to perform her duties as the Avatar. I wish people would just watch the show and take on board what they are shown without having to be expressly told in no uncertain terms what a person feels and what their motivations are - that kind of writing leads to the Star Wars prequels.

    I think one of the reasons they writers had Korra svrew up so much during her first match was to teach the audience the rules of pro-bending in a more interesting fashion than just having a character spell them out. This way, we learn them organically.

    As much as I would love another Avatar series, I doubt there'll be one. Nickelodeon treated Korra horribly towards the end, abruptly moving the show to online-only in the middle of the third season and slashing the budget for the last season. If there were to be another series, I doubt the creators would do it with Nickelodeon, it would have to be picked up through Amazon or Netflix or something like that.

      "She should have respected that it was an old and important artifact to Tenzin."
      It's pretty apparent that Tenzin didn't even tell her it was important until after she destroyed it. Besides, I'm not saying that Tenzin is 100% to blame, but you can't put all of the blame on Korra either. Who the hell uses an ancient historical artifact for training exercises? It belongs in a museum, behind bulletproof glass.

      I think if you're gonna destroy a 2000 year old relic then an Air one is the best way to go. The Air Nomads were monks taught not to be attached to worldly possessions. I believe that's why Tenzin was able to forgive her so quickly after the fact.

  • @mordirit8727
    @mordirit8727 7 лет назад +73

    I made the point once in a discussion that the problem with Tenzin's teaching is that he's never been a teacher, just a father. He never learned how to actually teach, because his students always had to listen to him, their dad. Korra is the first person who requires some didactic from him, and he just has none: one way to teach a lesson, learn through that formula or keep on trying forever. It's like those teachers who only ever get in class and read out loud the text book, not knowing that some people learn better visualizing, or doing hands-on experiments, or through research... You learn it like he wants you to, or you'll never learn.
    And Korra is no easy student either, like she says in the end, she tends to explode her frustration at herself against people who are merely tangential to her problems.
    A great teacher/student relationship we have here, since we get to see Korra evolve and grow as a student at the same time we see Tenzin grow and develop as a teacher, usually shows go with the easier "wise master/ignorant pupil" duo, the chemistry between Korra and Tenzin is simply innovative and a delight to watch it evolve =)

    • @mordirit8727
      @mordirit8727 7 лет назад +13

      That's like saying Luke and Yoda were a terrible teacher/student duo because Luke didn't respect him when he got to Dagobah. Character development can only happen if you have a character to develop, Korra and Tenzin's tension is what makes the moments they move forward so good.

  •  7 лет назад +86

    At the beginning I confess that I used to love and hate Korra at the same time lol, because she is so cool, but so stubborn sometimes... • @EmoBurrito123
      @EmoBurrito123 7 лет назад +32

      hyperdeath84 You're not winning me over. Zukos upbringing is what shaped him. Being rejected and shunned by his family and country, he had to prove himself. Korra borne into a loving family and taught by loving people (katara) how to be the avatar. We can sympathize with Zuko, korra on the other hand just comes out as bratty and annoying. An episode WAY later down the series that references Zuko doesn't somehow take away from all that. Let me end by saying that I DO NOT hate korra but when people tell me they don't like her I find it completely reasonable.

    • @EmoBurrito123
      @EmoBurrito123 7 лет назад +2

      The Avatar I'm pretty sure their is no consensus about what you just said. It totally depends on the person. Just because it's new to her doesn't excuse her bratty behavior, a lot of things ang knew were also knew to him, I mean he did wake up after a100 year coma and he was freaking 12. And I'm not saying her life was all sunshines and rainbows obviously she has big shoes to fill but as a viewer you can't sympathize with her as much she's a hot tempered mess, and sure that's just the way she is. That's her character and obviously most people, id say just don't like it because she comes off as braty.

    @BeyondBlue22 7 лет назад +153

    Very slight book-related spoilers here, just enough to help explain some stuff to the Blind Wave Crew.
    So yeah, Bolin and Mako actually ARE brothers. In the books they go into more detail about this, but right after the end of Last Airbender, Aang and Zuko were trying to restore the world to its original balance by excommunicating all Fire Nation people who inhabited and lived in the Earth Kingdom colonies that they took over by force. But because some of these colonies were as old as the Hundred Year War itself, some of them were actually at a point where the Fire Nation soldiers fell in love with Earth Kingdom villagers, and started families. There was a young girl Aang met who identified her heritage as that of her father, Fire, but she was an Earthbender. It shows that genetics DO play a role in bending, and if two different kinds of benders have children, they can either be the father's kind of bender, the mother's, or even a non-bender. It's random genetics at that point. So Bolin and Mako are actually blood related brothers, with parents that were a Firebender and an Earthbender, and they each got a different bending as a result.

If you want to better explained, than look up is bending genetic?

      @32Natban 7 лет назад +1

      Nasus The Curator Of Sands I disagree. She was shown how powerless/weak she was by her opponents and she was basically fearful by the end. I do think she learned some humility because of that fear on the last season BUT that had a very quick onset. She was the same throughout seasons 1,2,3 and then suddenly, she's different in S4. Of course it looks like a huge jump because it really was; so much so and so quickly that its pretty unrealistic to me.

    • @MyPj25
      @MyPj25 4 года назад +4

      32Natban she was shown humility when she first faced amon. It brought her back to earth and she then realized that after being guarded, sheltered, and protected by the white lotus for all her life, she is now faced with true danger. She felt powerless for the very first time. At the end of the first season when katara couldn’t bring her bending back, she contemplated suicide and she thought that having a new avatar be born is better than the world having only an airbending avatar. This was the moment she finally connected to her spiritual self. Honestly it’s a better showing of it rather than aang getting his connection back just by getting stabbed in the back by a pointy rock. So much development on just one season which of course you refuse to see

    • @MyPj25
      @MyPj25 4 года назад +2

      32Natban book 2 shows her decision making ability. How she decided to bring back the spirits. How she initially made the wrong decision to trust her uncle but then realize unalaq’s real intentions. Legend of aang explored what it means to be the avatar while korra explore what it means to be human. Her character is flawed and that makes her very interesting, realistic, and multi-dimensional. Eventually her decision even though at first seemed wrong due to the vines invading republic city, it brought back the air nation. She changed the world so much in just a couple of years and she risked her life countless of times in order to do so. She was left paralyzed at the conclusion of book 3 and in book 4 they really did a great job showing the how PTSD works. But she recovered not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well. She knew her duty to the world and she overcame every problem thrown at her

    Regarding production of Legend of Korra, they had a really difficult time scheduling the air time of season 3 and 4. Almost half of season 3 episodes were aired online all at once and similar case happened for season 4. It was like nickelodeon had no air time and showed no interest for the show. I think this was one of the factor that demotivated the creators of Avatar which is why it was announced that there was no plan for 3rd sequel of Avatar. Eric is right, Book 1 of Korra was originally meant to be self-contained, but Books 2, 3, and 4 were produced at the same time, so you'll see a lot more continuity between the latter three books. If I remember right, Book 4 was already being animated while Book 2 was airing. Another thing to keep in mind is that, like Books 2 and 3 of ATLA, there was a LONG gap between the original airings of Books 1 and 2 of Korra. After that, Nickelodeon dicked around with the airing schedule, switching back and forth between online-only and TV-only, and pulling some of show's budget at the last minute. It's really impressive how good the series is considering all the ways Nick tried to screw it over.

    One thing I find interesting with Korra is it's change in fight choreography. In Korra, it moves away from the more traditional styles you see in Airbender, this time taking a lot more inspiration from MMA fighting styles and "Tricking", a sort of performance fighting practice that incorporates aspects of gymnastics and breakdancing.

    This show on its own is really quite good, but most people start it after The Last Airbender and that makes it difficult. Ang was such a innocent, pure, fun and funny kid. That show was so pure. Then you start watching Korra and it is sorta like a CW show, teenager lead, lots of angst, drama, yelling, attitude and moodiness. It's less fun to watch an Avatar that is a disobedient brat with angst issues than it is a adorable, pure, cute monk kid who warms your heart (Ang).

      @@JamesWiseMagic I never got why someone would go to a video about a movie or book or show or song or game they hate just to spread their hate. I get it if you disagree with an educational thing, or want to add more info for a video/health/exercise advice that can go against the thing's meaning in an attempt to help someone in the comments. But to purposefully spread hate for something entertaining you don't like? That's an opinion, go enjoy what you like and leave everyone that likes something you hate alone. I noticed on the ATLA videos there were a bunch of fans of the original series saying to watch this next, and here in the comments there's a bunch of asswipes who think anyone that watches this gives a shit about their feelings. If they watch this and they like it, they won't care what you think about it. If they hate it they will move to something else. A few people's loud opinions won't change anyone's, it just makes them look dumb.

    One of the things I love about the overall Avatar franchise is that it's a family dramedy underneath it all. Aang (who carried the spirit of Avatar Roku) connected with Zuko (Roku's great-grandson), and then Korra connects with Aang's family.
    It's not overly played, but it is a nice touch to the series. Family continues to be part of people's lives in a different sort of way after they have passed on.

    Not to be a hater, but I've been watching Normies and switched back over to Blind Wave and I'm realizing the differences between the two. Blind Wave reactions are very analytical and lore focused. Like their recaps aren't mostly about the episode or characters, but spend more of their time focused on questions about how the dynamics of the world works or specific things like that. Again, not a bad thing, just something I noticed in terms of their style.

    • @2016brownie
      @2016brownie 7 лет назад +1

      To expand on that I think that's why I'm liking the LOK reacts from Blind Wave more than the ATLA reactions. The world has changed so much and a lot of the mechanisms/dynamics/lore stuff is in here so they can dig into the stuff they enjoy a bit more.

  • @snapgab
    @snapgab 7 лет назад +31

    JojoInSpace Obviously it's not an excuse for destroying that artifact, but I think that Korra WAS actually right about Tenzin being kind of a bad teacher.
    he didn't adapt his teaching methods to Korra's personality at all, and keeping her secluded was doing more harm than good.
    (She has already been secluded at the South Pole her whole life, now she finally gets to go to Republic City but you wont let her leave Air Temple Island? That was bound to cause a lot of frustration, and I don't really see how it could benefit her training.)
    Tenzin is actually a very flawed person and mentor, which is why I like him so much.
    But a lot of people don't seem to realize that, probably because they're so used to mentors being perfect wise & enlightened people, and I think that it causes people to unfairly criticize Korra.
    (Criticizing her is fine, she's very flawed as well, but I think that people take it too far.)

The difference here is that Tenzin not only adjusts his style but apologizes for doing it wrong. Toph eventually takes Katara's advice, but she never acknowledges that she was wrong.

    There's a really interesting video on here about bending genetics-I'm not sure if it has any spoilers, but it has a really sound theory for how bending is passed down. Of course, there's spiritual elements, but I'm sure genetics play a big role.
    Also, the creators explained a while back that Mako and Bolin serve to represent the diversity in Republic City and how mixed the population has gotten after 70 years.

  • @romeo2417
    @romeo2417 7 лет назад

    Now that various benders are in republic city, for a bender to be born and raised in that diverse environment, I now realize that the unique fighting styles between each type of bender is less present. I seem to notice that the way they bend is more like "just generally punch and kick" rather than maintain a certain form for earth, fire, or water benders.
