Prices here are crazy low with these legacy growers who haven't caught on to the boom in prices in the US and elsewhere. It's a different story on eBay, where I've seen fairly mature copiapoa cinerea go for upwards of £500.
@@greatnorthernexotic I find some of the same trend here too regarding old-school growers' pricing. You can find steals from them. I've also seen cases where some old-school growers catch onto the market prices and then raise their prices to match. Enjoy it while you can!
Yeah we're lucky here in that these older growers have not increased their prices in a long time, despite a boom in copiapoa overseas. I'll definitely be back for more.
Thank you, it was a great experience, so much choice and couldn't argue with the prices. Will definitely be returning again soon for more! Have you visited any of the other cactus specialists in the UK?
Awesome video. I hope to visit Southfield in the near future, a lot of the plants I have come from them via mail order. You got some beauties there, Copiapoa are one of my favourite genus. Glad I stumbled on your channel, given you a sub as well 👍🏻 Look forward to checking out your other videos. Happy growing 👍🏻🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜
Thank you! Southfield was fantastic, great prices and they had plenty of astrophytum and lophs in stock too. They've got another greenhouse with huge specimens in (I assume their stock plants etc.) but it was closed off for customers unfortunately. Have you visited any other cacti nurseries in person? I'm local to William's Cactus so have been there. Abbey Brook and Oak Dene are next on my list, and I'd love to look around David Quail's ariocarpus greenhouse too.
@@greatnorthernexotic Haven’t been to any of the major ones yet, but Southfield and probably The Cactus Shop in Devon are the two main ones on my list.
Great video! Looks an amazing place. Will be visiting next weekend. Do they give you a box when you enter? Just wondering as I'll be getting there by bus and working out how I can carry stuff back home.
Yeah they have plenty of cardboard boxes and newspaper to pack your purchases - these seems to be standard practice at cactus nurseries and sales. By the way, they are in the middle of a retirement sale with everything discounted so you should pick up some bargains - let me know what you get!
@@greatnorthernexotic I got these plants. Talk about kid in a sweet shop! Mammillaria guelzowiana v. robustior. Gymnocalycium achirasense v. orientale. Lobivia hybrid 'carnival'. Denmoza rhodacantha. Thelocactus conothelos v. aurantiacus. Submatucana aureiflora. Rebutia krainziano and Astrophytum capricorne v. aurea. Could have got a lot more but would have needed a greenhouse extension! Do you think the nursery is going to close down now? Such a shame if they do. The old chap looked a bit frail, but full of knowledge.
@@melian2003 nice haul! The original plan was to close the business in September but there are rumours they might have a buyer. They were on Gardeners World this week!
were there any cinereas? cinereas are the really expensive ones.. prized for their very uniform medium sized black spines. (other copiapoa grow much much much faster too btw)
No c. cinerea but they have had them in the past. I did pick up a nice sized specimen at an auction in my latest video though: ruclips.net/video/DeBpljGqfbw/видео.html
Hey man. I'm deffinatly going to be getting all of the poas they have in stock here! Do you know where I could buy cinerea and other poas that sutherland don't have? Based in UK
Super hard to source cinerea or columna-alba. Dealbata and haseltoniana I see more often but still few and far between. In terms of young plants, you're best bet is hitting up BCSS shows and sales. As for mature specimens, I've been lucky to attend the odd cactus auction after a BCSS member has passed away, but you'll pay a premium for the species everyone wants. Decent sized specimens of the ones I mentioned were going for £200-300 each.
This is the market in the UK, essentially. Besides c. cinerea, most copiapoa species can be picked up inexpensively. The growers here are by and large older people who have no idea of the boom in popularity of certain species over in the States.
Nothing but money hungry sellers in the states. Unfortunately I just love to give them my money. The way I see it, I can go out and find money everyday, but it’s much harder to find nice copiapoa.
Whatttt those prices are unbelievable! Lucky!!!

Can't believe you bought a copiapoa for that much!! They're so rare and expensive here. Nicely done.
Yeah we're lucky here in that these older growers have not increased their prices in a long time, despite a boom in copiapoa overseas. I'll definitely be back for more.
Yeah, that's ridiculous lol here in Aus it's more like 20-25 AUD a plant
In US you would spend that much for 5 seeds not 5 full grown cacti. Well done
Amazing plants and great prices, thankyou for taking us there.
Thanks, appreciate that - hoping to get to more UK cacti nurseries soon!
Just found your channel, love the plants!
Thank you! 😄👍
What a bargain!
Cool video, would love to visit Southfield Nursey some day soon. I buy from them using their mail order service.

Nice little gems you got there. Like the black spines too.
Thank you!

😂 it's a great way of looking at it. Unfortunately I really love the same slow-growing, expensive genera as everyone else!
