wow what memories!!! i couldn't wait to get home to see the next episodes as a kid. thx you for that. made me tear up a little. one of my favorite series of all time!
I think you guys did a very good job at trying to visually resolve that haunting inconsistency that, at the time of production, was unavoidable. I also am really glad that you dedicated the effort to Macek. A lot of people hate on him for changing a story around, but the true fact of the matter is, he brought Robotech to us. Thank you.
Thank for the positive feedback. Robotech is comprised of 3 separate anime series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, in that order. Short episode series would have to go direct to video in the 80s. To get on nationwide TV, you needed 13 weeks worth of content (65 episodes). The 3 series were combine into Robotech (85 episodes) in order to get aired in syndication. The name Robotech comes from the model maker Revell. They already licensed some Macross designs and others (Fang Of The Sun Dougram and Super Dimension Century Orguss) and released them under the name Robotech. Matchbox didn't get involved until later. Macross was part of the Super Dimension trilogy that includes Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Century Orguss, and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. The stories were independent but there was some character cross-overs between series. You'll even catch some mech cross-overs if you look closely enough. If you've seen Macross 7 or Macross Frontier, you will notice many similarities to the 2nd & 3rd chapters of Robotech. M7 & Frontier aren't copies by any means but the similarities are enough to make you wonder if Shoji Kawamori was giving a nod to Robotech. Kawamori does make nods & references to earlier series in his newer ones. Recycled animation is just a sign of budgetary limitations when the original series were created. The story and characters are what makes the series really strong.
+Koszarsky It's amazing how the 3 unrelated original series could be stitched into one that made so much sense. I also think the first Robotech series has more coherent and airtight plot than Macross. Pity Sentinels never took off and Shadow Rising may never be produced :/
blew my mind when in the end Kyron and Azonia ended up being in love. like the whole human love motion was foreign and frightening to the Zentradi yet the most stubborn antagonist ended up getting it.
According to some Macross source books, in the original Macross franchise, the SDF-1 was actually repaired and equipped with Armo (not sure how you spell it) type cruisers that replaced the Daedalus and Prometheus.
Crazy how a saturday morning cartoon show had one of the best stories in cartoon history. The love story is actually the focal point and the war the side story, crazy right? Impressive writing. I can watch this series over and over. It totally outclasses southern cross and "rock star" third season.
Thats part of the appeal its not only about the action but the human aspect of the series my best friend got me hooked on the series as a kid and she loved it because of the love story not so much the action and i'll admit it the the love story won me over in the end ^^ but it shows the power of good writing and a good story.
It proves my point "cartoon/Anime/movie/series" once you have a good story that has cha dev good pacing and a awesome plot and you can add action if you want you have got a classic it does not have to be all flash and bang.If it s there cool but action not all its cracked up to be look at Princess Mononoke another classic.
xoxoFISHERxoxo All of the older animes just rocked it. Akira, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D. The story was just amazing and the animation was excellent. One of the best...Iria.......just wow.
Wow my friend IMO Iria is a classic but yes the older animes are very good .Dont get me wrong there are a lot of good anime series these days but that was the golden era of anime IMO.
I made the new scenes from various other scenes throughout series. Lots of PhotoShop. Masking, compositing, tracking, colour adjustments, misc FX in BorisRED. Sound was mixed with Media100. The edit was done with an old school MacroSystems DraCo NLE.
Robotech really deserves a Remake... It's awesome, but it needs to be redone to introduce it back to people. Maybe to please everyone they could have the Robotech feeling (music and similar voice actors for english) and then have the Macross bits that were edited out in Robotech added back in. Would be perfect, with newer animation and everything enhanced...
HG takes a lot of crap, and some is earned, but the original agreement for distribution was made with BW & Tatsunoko with HG getting international distribution rights. Japanese courts have upheld this agreement. BW could just as easily honor the agreement, use HG to distribute, and reach a worldwide market. So you can hold BW just as accountable for no Macross outside of Japan.
The thing I just don't understand is the final shot of the Main Gun. Every single time it was fired previously the gun utterly destroyed anything and everything in it's path whether it was a direct hit or not. It was even shown to destroy entire ships that were simply too close to the beam's direct path! Kyron's ship took a near direct hit and yet it somehow survived? How? That shot, even at reduced power, should have disintegrated that ship completely. Kyron's ship should have never been able to survive........
The point I was making is that even at reduced power (even firing as little as 25%) it would have been able to destroy that ship easily. I do, however, understand that it was all a plot point that the SDF-1 meet it's fate, but it seems like this plot hole raises the question. After all it was kind of anti-climatic.
Christopher Adams True. That has bothered me for a long time. But one thing I just noticed is the very different quality of the "firing sequence" portion of the shot--where normally it takes the form of orange/reddish "sparks" running up the booms from back to front, coalescing into a kind of cats cradle an instant before the beam materializes. Here, there is a sickly-looking cat's cradle in thin yellow. Whatever the energy level of ".950" means (whether or not it's the percentage or permil of a "fully charged shot" or just some number that has no specific relationship), apparently, it wasn't quite enough to totally destroy Khyron's ship. Notice, too, that the blast initially flares widely before finding focus--something noted in the novelizations--and that this initial lack of focus--lack of control???--may be due to the low power levels--"barely enough...". That would also explain the disintegration of the booms--perhaps there is normally a force field of sorts protecting them, but since there was not enough power, no force field this time; alternately, the "blowtorching" at the beginning of the shot may have damaged the booms so that they began to disintegrate, but not before delivering a crippling, if not complete, shot. This is, of course, speculation, but I think it fits the footage pretty well. And, btw, my friend came up with it, lol. Good bullshitter.
Reflex Point Well in the original Macross the entire bridge crew survived and SDF-1 only lost her arm. So Lisa being fine makes sense. They later head for the center of the galaxy and are all lost for some unknown reason. Within the show the movie "Do you remember love" is actually made about the SDF-1 crew. Rick and Lisa have a kid before they disappear. Crap ending IMO. Im glad Robotech went another direction with it.
I know ur comment is three years old, but that's something called "plot armor" where everything is invincible if they have a role to play later in the story. Hope that helps. The degree to which s writer uses "plot armor" spells out the talent of the writer IMO. The more the writer relies on, the worse the writer...Robotech had it's share of plot armor and hand waving, but since it's sights were set pretty low anyway it got away with it.
Bravissimo! A fine bit of work. This is quite satisfying, with a minimum of tampering. The only thing I really wish I could see is actual footage of the SDF-2 taking the hit. The scene shown really doesn't quite work. I'm glad you didn't use the shot from when Khyron hit the SDF-1 and destroyed the radar tower--that would have been far too small, but there really isn't an image of the SDF-1 getting its guts knocked out. Any chance we'll see a bit of new animation to show the SDF-2 getting holed? Just a thought. Bravo!
What is the ROBOTECH series that has a WWII style battleship (that also has a huge weapon in the ships bow) that is heading to another planetary system to get something that will save the earth after it was bombarded with radio active meteors(?)
Robotech syndrom. It was just lucky shot... It was before the internet ! We now know the 3 original series that were put togheter... That's why Robotech is a thing from the past! Never to come back again! MACROSS from Japan got many series but Macek american dream got stuck since cause they didn't even draw one cell in their own TV serie! they made little effort to become REAL anime company! It was great for it's time sure!
Nicely done. I think I heard a Wilhelm Scream @ 5:06. I always thought it was a shame that Rick and Khyron never got to finish their business they started from "Sweet Sixteen".
I always loved this show. But I am sad that I can not find more on RUclips then some of the more popular episodes I think you should do more robotech films and ask people which episodes they want to see because robotech is getting more rare on RUclips by the day
Sheppard101'World 3 years later... but I have the full dvd set of robotech macross lol. Infact just re watched it and I can say near the end I hate minmei more than ever.
Ok, anyone tell me this. One thing that has buggered me since i first saw the episode in the 1980ths. Just WHEN did the admiral push Lisa into an escape pod since we see her on the bridge when the ships collided.
Ironically the only us version of killed the crew of the SDF-1(when it's usually the other way around when adapting a Japanese show) everyone on the bridge survived in the Macross series.
+mattep74 There was a few years ago a comic book revival of the show with stories taking place at various points in the series. In the first story it was shown in a flashback that after Kyron's ship exploded, Gloval and Claudia placed Lisa who was knocked unconscious from the impact in to the escape pod before the ships reactor was breached; killing everyone on board. The bridge bunnies (Vanessa, Kim and Sammy) were also seen lying dead on the floor while they were doing this.
My issue isn't so much that Robotech totally images the 3 anime series it takes from. My issue is that Harmony Gold has blocked every attempt to bring Macross to the US, thus American audiences are deprived of legitimate ways to watch new content.

Lisa at 11:40 "oh really"? She's not buying Minmei's BS.
That scene with lisa and minmay in the beginning. best scene ever
Me gusta mucho robotech
oh my gosh thank you... this bothered me so much in the original! and the fix wasn't even that complicated!
This series is now on Netflix
So watch it now while you can!
AQnd they went missing near the center of the Galaxy, never to be heard from again.

Or Harmony Gold could let go of the rights so we can get all the Macross we want in the states instead of having to bootleg or buy it in Japan.

farewell big brother :(
Minmay followed Lisa's advice, she let Rick go. She loved Rick after all

I didn't like the sound effects on the remastered version. I'm still partial to the old sound effects
Me too I have no idea why they thought it be cool to add in the new effects.
I'm totally with you. They just want to sell the same thing twice. I've seen the remasters enough to know that's 11 minutes of my life I want back.

He died of a heart attack.
@@ilexgarodan tragic.........classic series.
I still like the old sound effects. the new sound effect just don't sound right
someones needs to add a "what if" series
There's a crossover graphic novel with Lion Voltron.
AFTER THE SACRIFICE OF THE SDF -1, I DID NOT GIVE FUCK ABOUT MIMMEI'S FEELINGS!
Wow, that's fantastic!
minmay just got served
Crappy sound effects, I prefer the original sounds.
that has nothing to do with his work
Tottally Agree On That
Damn good edit
WHATS THE SONG IN BEGINNING
Earth Government theme
REALLY NICE JOB
BTW CARL MACEK HIMSELF SAID THAT THE SDF-2 EXPLODED
GO TO THIS CHANNEL - ROBOTECHX
IT IS SAID IN ONE OF THOSE PANELS
A FAN ASKS HIM ABOUT THE SDF-2
Robotech would've been an AWESOME anime if it weren't for the following flaws:
- Recycled graphics. Lots of scenes were used over and over again.
- Reused soundtrack. Soundtrack was awesome, but it was reused over and over and over again.
- Minmae's songs. Oh for fucks sake her songs made me want to rip my pubes out. It was played over and over and over and over and OVER again. Holy shit.
You are aware that RT is actually a mishmash of 3 completely unrelated anime series from Japan right?
Yup. That's why I didn't criticize that much about the soundtrack or the graphics part, but mostly on Minmae's god damn songs.
The original voice actress for Minmae is actually not that bad. Shes also on FB. It's Reba West that almost killed every ones ears.
Boonedale
o0 What? what three shows?
The first story arc of Robotech is from: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the second story arc is from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and the third being based from Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.
There is another that was never adapted into RT lore called: Super Dimension Century Orguss.

The bridge of Khyron's ship.
Koszarsky From the inside?
StevenShields29 Yes is from the iinside, do this: in the same episode you'll see the Kyron's ship taking off in the Amazonas, check the scene carefully, you can see how the lights are turned on inside the ship just before Sonia stated that "all systems are ready". Compare the inside of the ship from that scene to this one and you'll find that both are the same, in fact, the segment from 9:00 to 9:03 is a frame taked from the take-off in the first place :3

There never was an SDF-2 anyways. thank you americans for moping up a japanese classic. Do yourself a favour, folks, whatch the original :p
Of course there was, in Robotech AND Macross.

How women are represented in Robotech was a huge change for the time. There was a much greater diversity and more numerous characters than other series. And they aren't overly sexualized as many female characters are today.
It's easy to take Robotech out of the context of the period and toss it aside but it deserves much more credit that it's given these days.
It was on the moon, it's called the SDF-2 Megaroad.
