Mr Lumumba I am from Sapele City in Delta State Nigeria you spoke about slavery and how it plagued Africa and her Children but what about the slavery still going on today in Mauritania the majority Black Haratin that make 40% of the population in Mauritania are all descendants of slaves during the Arabs participation on the Trans Atlantic slave trade and prior to the Trans Atlantic slave trade but the Haratin tribe have not been given their freedom till today they are still use as slaves without pay by the white Arabs of Mauritania they work their living conditions is not good they are force to work I read of a report when a lady was rape by his white Arab master till this day the white Arabs still haven't abolished slavery because they know that if they do the blacks will be the majority of Mauritania because they are 70% of the population 40% Haratin and 30% fulanis, wolof etc so what about those people suffering everyday due to ignorance and illiteracy the white Arabs are taking advantage of them what about them they did nothing wrong to the Arabs they all converted to the Muslim religion when I saw their living conditions I cried I literally shed tears how can people who look like me even though we don't speak the same language which is meaningless as they speak Arabic how can they still be in bondage why because of the worst sin on Earth which is being born black

I still have a copy of my GG Grandfathers Bill of Sale when he was about 11 years old in 1812 he wzs sold for $270. He had 13 children by 4 different women during slavery here in the US
10 were sold before freedom came in 1865.. We know the 7 different places they were sold too but still have not been able to find all his descendents. He wanted to find them all before he passed away!!

@JTM1260 Most of the large plantions kept thorough financial records that included the birth of enslaved children and their parents and their value. They needed to keep track for tax and insurance purposes. These records also tracked slaves bought and sold. Along of the records have been donated to colleges but some are still owned by descendents of the slave owners.

Yes, slavery is an old practice that is still going on to-date through brain drain, export of domestic workers to Arab Emirates, switching of nationalities by athletics to play for the wealthier countries.... Have you seen how Africans are dying in the Mediterranean just to reach Europe for a better life? Long ago people were coerced onto leaving, not any different now when circumstances force people to leave their continent to slavery.

Excellent brief on differences in slavery by whites Vs Arabs. "Arabisation and islamisation" in eastern Africa as distinct from transplanting black people to the west. Castrating by Arabs Vs breeding farms in the west. Islam and Christianity both legimatised slavery👏👏🎉 biggest difference is the scale of violence and commercialisation where TransAtlantic Slave has no equal in modern human history - lasting four centuries😢. African Americans fail to learn about the very things this very intelligent gentleman is discussing. Many African Americans play down the role of the Portuguese, who were the pioneers of the trans atlantic slave trade. The Portuguese took more slaves than any other European country, and slavery lasted longer in Portuguese colonies.
Sephardic Jews are also excluded from this conversation.
Most Africans avoid this subject altogether.

And the Africans themselves were also there. The African chiefs would capture their own people and those of other tribes, bind and cage them and leave them on the beaches for the slave traders to collect. So the Africans themselves dehumanised their own kind. Mansour, Tipo Tep, the barbary pirates. The largest slave owners in the USA were actually black owned cotton farms. There was also slave trading of white people. The formation of the Royal Navy was as a result of stopping the slave ships from Africa from taking their people and making slaves of them (so why didnt the Africans do this?). And dont forget, it was the British and USA that stopped the slave trade.

Dear Professor Lumumba, thank you for your enlightening talk. I would like to respectfully disagree with a few points you made. While it is true that Africans were victims of slavery, it is also true that Africans were involved in the slave trade. Africans enslaved each other and sold their fellow Africans to White and Arab men. Africans dehumanized other Africans, arrested, caged and killed their fellow Africans.
Regarding Christianity, it is important to note that Christianity was a driving force behind the abolition of slavery. The Bible so obviously condemns the kind of slavery that was practiced that the people who tried using the Bible to condone slavery found themselves getting rid of 80% of the Bible. William Wilberforce, an English Christian man who was driven by his Christian convictions introduced a law to abolish slavery in the British parliament. When the Royal Navy fought to abolish slavery, they faced opposition from all over the world, including from Africans.
It is important to acknowledge that slavery was a terrible evil that all races were guilty of. We need to move forward by acknowledging our past mistakes and working together towards a better future. The victimising of Africans and demonising of white men MUST stop. We are all Humans!

I disagree with you respectfully, your lukewarm view keeps us in mind slavery bondage, we are not liberated by the mindset of Christianity, Islam and any religion that was imposed on us. Both TransAtlantic and Subsaharan Slavery routes were nasty. The implications are still upon us especially in Kenya. Look how confused, oppressed and fetishized Kenyans are to all these foreigners who we allow to disrespect our bodies and lands. Listen to Baba the Elder is speaking towards our liberation. We all need serious liberation medicine without comparing or making excuses for other races, they shouldn't be included in this conversation, neither be part of it. We need healing and education of ourselves first! We have never had the chance to have uninterrupted time to self govern, self determine. Our languages have been stripped from us, and our resources and now our ovaries and sperms.....

What happened per Jacob's God is the Israelites of the Bible came under a curse, Deuteronomy 28. The tribe of Judah mainly and other tribes of Israel poured into Africa. The Africans then have suffered with the Israelites their curses in the form of slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism. The Israelites of the Bible have lived out their curses and now are set to be blessed for God loves to bless His creation. Since we as a people are mixed over the centuries, we will all be blessed by God. The land of Israel is on the same Continental plate, so is probably and has always been African.

All other forms of slavery before the trans-Atlantic did not strip people of their humanity. They were about indentured servitude for petty crimes that someone would work their way out of. The trans-Atlantic slave trade started with dehumanization. Once humanity was removed, the people became "livestock". Farm animals bred, worked, and paraded at shows. And because they had human form, slaves were also used for sexual entertainment.

I define domestication as the caring of living things for exploitation.
Slavery is the domestication of humans.
Domestication/Slavery was only possible after humans settled down and could care for lives exploited.
The relationship between the genders also descended into domestication.
The transatlantic breeding of slaves was resorted to after capturing fresh slaves was illegal.
Recognition of slaves as the most valuable commodity is similar to Mwalimu recognizing humans as the greatest resource.
The Romans used captured Greek intellectuals to educate their children.

12:08 - enslaving of non-believers in Islam only permitted in prisoners of war. Islam didn’t permit enslaving what it called dhimmis (non-believer protected people). That being said, Arabs did misuse this that they often waged jehad to disguise slave hunting.
When said permitted, it doesn’t mean encouraged. Islam banned all other forms of slave trading as a sin. It just let the one form of enslaving , that is enslaving a non-believer prisoner of war. Also, Islam is the only religion that commands how a slave master has to treat his or her slave. It’s the only religion that prescribes paying the slave before their sweat falls on earth. I do agree Islam ‘s view on slavery has its weaknesses, however, unlike Torah, Quran puts boundaries. Torah defines every non-Jew as born to serve the Jewish nation as slaves… Quran doesn’t do that. Under the same umbrella of Islam, big chunk of those became emirs and sultans were freed slaves….

The God worshipped by the enslavers in the name of Christianity is different from the Most High God worshipped by the enslaved. The enslavers worshipped materialism which is their God up-to-date. The Europeans did not really bring true Christianity to Africa. True Christianity was already in Africa through Ethiopia before Europeans had contact with Africa during their age of discovery.

I would challenge the historical narrative given about slavery and Islam. He lumps slavery with Islam but fails to mention that The Quran opposed slavery and mentions the rewards for freeing slaves. Additionally, he fails to mention how some African languages become “Arabized.” Now he goes way to far in accusing Islam of being a religion that used slavery. He is wrong! Some Arabs may be guilty of slavery but Islam the religion provides the remedy for ending slavery. Islams primary belief is that God-All is the only One worthy of obedience, worship or slavery. Either he is not giving the whole story on purpose or he needs to look at the history of slavery among Muslims again. I am disappointed that his scholarship is either lacking or purposely tainted. This brings shame to his scholarship!

Slavery was ordained and legitimized by the Catholic Church through the "Papal bull" on 4th May, 1493 by the then Pope Alexander VI to allow the Spaniards, Portuguese and other European nations to enslave Africans because they were infidels and were regarded to be "outside of the grace of their Christian lord Jesus Christ". Sorry but the entire Congo basin and beyond practised slavery and canibalism. But you need to be literate in French, German ,Dutch ,English. Swahili is an imperial/custom langauge that was promoted as a tool to facilitate the slave trade( mostly in the congo basin). Swahili was designed to facilitate the trade in slavery and Ivory.Slavery was always part and parcel of the old world whether in Rome where 1 out of 5 people was a slave or in the extended Congo basin with similar statistics. Africa is a misnomer. We need to change names. So lets call the bantus Bakongolo and forget the name Africa. The Bantus always had slaves. The funny thing about the slaves in Kongolo , they were the smartest people. The rich Bantus dressed in rags to avoid the evil eyes. Slavery started within the Bantu tribes themselves. The entire Kongo basin was populated by casual canibals. This was not survival canibalism or ritual canibalism. Most of the Kongo basin Bantus LOVED human flesh. The truth of the mater is Africans like everyone else were u
