  • In observance of Juneteenth, United’s Black Business Resource Group, BEACON, invited 100 students to participate in a celebratory flight (for many, it was their very first flight) and day-long career fair at the airport to help inspire and empower new aviators.
Before the flight, students watched this message from Ms. Opal Lee, the “grandmother of Juneteenth.” At the age of 89, Opal started walking two and a half miles in cities across the country to symbolize the two and a half years it took from the Emancipation Proclamation being signed for enslaved people in Texas to learn they were free. 155 years, 11 months and 28 days later, Opal was at President Biden’s side in 2021 when he signed the bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
