You guys are funny with your comments on whether I would be kicked in the knee or the groin, etc. It's just a video on basic stances and how to do them. It's about fundamentals, that's all! This video has nothing to do with self-defence and does not ever suggest that I would adopt such a stance in an actual fight. Some of the comments are like arguing about how to compose a piece of music, when the video simply shows how to play scales.

LOL its not just you sensei, but i get those comments from my real life students, and i tell them the same thing, it is fundamentals we are learning, and by getting the fundamentals right, our brain will be "rewired" to understand what is good balance and posture, so when a real fighting situation comes up, then even an impulsive or reactive action will more likely to be useful.

I'm a red belt and i', backing to Karate after almost 20 years... I confess that what I learned 20 years ago, remains in my mind. When I got back, all the teaching technics got back on my mind instantly! But you video series It's giving me the know how to improve my technic and advance to green belt in next semester... I learned 3 Katas in 1 month, just remembering my old training and, of course, with a little help by your videos :) Thanks Sensei, I help a lot about basics and average technics.

This may be because I'm a mixed martial artist and I don't really do karate, but we were taught to do the 90゚and keep both legs bent. This ensures full range of movement and protection. We mainly used the ranking and techniques Ninpo ninjutsu. We never locked the back leg, or had it straight, because that leaves a shortcut for an opponent coming at you from the side to break your knee. One of the other points of doing that is grounding your stance and providing a better center of gravity. The stance is supposed to be somewhat low. And if you train that way the control you speed and power that that affords you, make the stance pretty useful. For the most part in order for someone to break that stance they would have to step in step in the middle of your stance. There's an invisible middle limb of balance that you are taught to specifically go for and specifically break up. I'm only a purple belt so the 3rd level. The last 2 hours and class hours on my way to getting my green belt level 4. With Atmospheric training Academy you are required to earn your belt through test.

Great vid, Kuzushi balance should also be used to determine distance and weight keeping center of balance is key. If balance is good shifting from Kiba Dachi to Zenkutsu Dachi should require very little changing of footwork merely shifting of body weight while using tame (spring) kinetic linking into proper powerful Zenkutsu. as for personal preference I prefer keeping keeping lower legs and feet under knees for more mobility while in a kiba Dachi allowing for quicker balanced rotational transitions and stronger springiness of tame Kiba dachi to Zenkutsu Dachi.

Depends, in forms, we move on bent knee so as not to be bouncy. In freestyle sparring,(depending on where you learned) I've seen bouncing to and fro as a technique. But I've also seen a stationary low stance and a kind of half step shuffle in for strikes. Because it is "freestyle" whatever works best for the individual is probably the best answer. Good question! respect.

High kicks - is it more practical to kick waist and lower, yes. do you still need to train high kicks, yes you do. You should be able to kick anymore on the opponent. Doing high, middle and low kicks so as to be more well rounded and versatile. Do not limit yourself.

Ossu, Sensei. Respectfully...are you aware of how Nishiyama Sensei returned to shorter, original stances (since he came out of the JKA, and was senior to Kanazawa sensei)? He also commented at one time that Nakayama sensei was incorrectly promoting that the back leg in zenkutsu dachi be straight when it should act like a spring and be bent slightly.
Please be kind enough to explain.
    Thank you.

Are karate practitioners "bouncy"? Does karate teach you to constantly be on the move like in Wing Chun or Taekwondo or are they fairly stationary? And when using kiba dachi one would turn their head to face the opponent, correct? If one has to look straight forward that would leave one dangerously open!

So since im a white belt, This guy in class, He's one of the higher ups, He'd constantly make me do these stances, Only the front stance (so far) and >.> telling my Sensei that I should not perform any kata's until I know this properly, HEY, I'm a white belt, I'm just learning ya know? No one really taught me stances before! The way he wants me to perfect seems so hard, DUDE, Were you always that good when you just started? Yeah? Well good for you! I'm kinda happy about it that he's just looking out for me but... At the same time, He made me feel like I dont even deserve a white belt, Hell, I dont even deserve that promotion that my sensei wants to give me anymore, It Kinda depresses me.

    Well, there goes my knees...
I have Arthritis in my knees badly enough to that if I bent them to a certain degree, it'll hurt so much probably to the point of giving up on me...
In my case, it's very crucial for my knees to be bent fairly often in stances, punches, and kicks techniques in any Martial Arts I were to learn...Now that I know more about how the stances are when it comes to balancing and other details, I bet I can learn Karate even at home...
    *Sighs* Lesson learned...-_-

He wouldnt get kicked in the nuts. These are traditional stances to solidify your body in punches and kicks
. In a street fight they are modified yet the fundamentals of power are still there. Plus the karate-ka would be to quick and would counter such an attack.

Zenkutsu Dachi is an offensive, attacking position.
Why do you have a blockage (gedan barai) in this position? You should present it in a defensive position (kokutsu dachi).
You have the courage to get out of the traditional program, to analyze all aspects and to adapt a correct and modern karate
