I'm a hobbyist photographer, and I bought the DS version because it offers something different. I'm not sure if I'll like it, but I have a 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 24-105mm f/4, so the DS lens might be interesting. Also, the loss of light could actually be beneficial since I mainly shoot during the day with good natural light

I grabbed the DS lens earlier this week as it was £2,209 in the prime day sale. I've wanted it for a while but was waiting for just such an opportunity. (I live in Jersey so no VAT, just Jersey Tax, so my cost was actually £1,928).

I don’t know if you mentioned it, but they did say that I think by F4 that the defocus smoothing is completely gone so you really have to shoot it wide open to see the benefits.

I doubt it. Sony tends to prioritize small size and low weight so they're more likely to do yet another 85 f/1.4.
