I know this is an old comment, but we are currently looking at a 2007 Eddie Bower edition, with 190k miles for $6k. We are in the northeast, so rust is *always* a big deal. But if we can get them in decent shape, undercoating is a blessing. I don’t like newer cars. I like to buy older with cash, then drive them for a decade or more. I would be able to buy this SUV, and keep driving it for another decade.

Mileage: I can get 20 - 22 mpg over the road, if I keep it on cruise control at 70mph. Above, it quickly sinks to 16 when I push it to 80 to 85. Just change the oil every 5000 miles; the 5.4 L engine is prone to oil passage blockage from sludge. Keep the insides clean, use full synthetic and a new oil filter every 5K. It just may last forever.

I use a 2010 SSV Expedition at a towing company for a roadside assistance vehicle. It was bought at government auction from a fire department where it accumulated about 75,000 hard miles. Even came with the red lights and emergency stuff on it. Now it runs 12 hour+ shifts in the snow, mud and super cold and hot weather alike. Has about 900 lbs of tools and equipment on it including a 12k lb winch for pulling vehicles out of ditches or off road recoveries, and it's occasionally used for towing trailers as well. It's a beast of a truck. It goes where others can't, and it even has mud tires on it. I'd take driving it over the tow trucks any day, and the tow trucks are almost brand new! Very solid, and dependable vehicle.

Agreed. From what I heard from Volt owners, they just plugged it into a regular 120v socket at home. They said the gas engine would maybe kick in once a week. And long trips were no problem because of the gas engine. GM probably spent a billion dollars on this thing and then dropped it. All the RD costs and manufacturing costs were paid for. Just like Scotty says, they could have slowly improved it over time.

2002 Expediaton since 2012. 4R100 transmission was a plus to me. It has blowen 2 of its spark plugs out but repaired. One coil on plug replaced. Overall, 2v 5.4 is OK. $10000 96,000 Miles, 162000 now. I got B1261 code so A/C isn't blowing cold all the time when sun sensor is shorted. Paid for, priceless. I can buy a lot of gas for a car payment cost. And I can play my cassettes and CDs yet in the radio.

I have 2 expeditions. A 2002 and a 2005. They have been great and reliable vehicles. The 2002 lost its transmission around 160k miles and the 2005 lost it's at about 145k. Both towed a 4500 pound boat in the mountains which I'm sure has contributed to the failed transmissions, but both engines still run great with the transmission being the onlyissue.

I never had problems with the 4wd system on my Expedition. And I can but wonder if scotty has ever driven in snow. As someone who has driven trucks and SUVs that have both 4wd and 2wd modes, it makes a huge difference. And 4wd does help cornering and braking in snow. Its been proven in testing.

Come on Scotty, dig deeper. "2009-2010 The 5.4 -liter V8 improved in 2009, fixing the cam phaser issues and all but eliminating the spark plug problems."

Coming from a family Navigator owner (Literally same thing) if you can afford it, I’d recommend getting 2010 or newer. Seems that’s when Ford fixed all of the issues on the Expedition/Navigator. My Dad used to have an 08 Navigator and the rear left suspension broke 3 times in a time period of 3 months. Also had lot’s of other issues I can’t remember. We sold it for a 2014 Navi. It’s got an extra 10 horsepower, transmission is more smooth, and it’s a lot more reliable.

Mine came with the bad entertainment center,(I'll never fix it), one burnt out retracting running board motor (I took out the passenger running board) and shattered cheap plastic moonroof hardware (fixed it water tight but I'll never open it because it's fragile).
