  • "Manhã de Carnaval" (Morning of Carnival) first appeared as the main theme in the 1959 Portuguese-language film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) by French director Marcel Camus, with a soundtrack that included a number of famous songs by Antonio Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, who performed these songs ensemble Bonfá (Samba de Orfeu).
The song "Manhã de Carnaval" ("Morning of the Carnival") appears in several scenes of the film, where it is sung by both main characters (Orpheus and Eurydice). There is also an instrumental version, so this song was the "main" theme song for the film.
In 1960, the song won an Oscar along with the film Black Orpheus. After that, it became available to a wide audience around the world, certainly winning first places in various charts.
"Manhã de Carnaval" was one of the first compositions identified as the Bossa Nova style of music, which began to rapidly gain popularity outside of Brazil.
Particularly in the United States, the song is considered one of the most important examples of the Brazilian bossanova style of jazz.
