Say you wanted to change the material on the chair, not just the colour. Further to that, you have 5 colour ways, for 3 different chair models. Additionally the legs come in 3 finishes, such as black, wood and metal. Plus you want two different camera angles, and the lighting changes with each view. Is this doable? I'm using Modo, where this is fairly easy but looking at C4D and wondering if I can do the same sort of setup. Also in Modo I can matrix these options to create a final set which would be 90 renders all to render out at a click of a button with the file names matching the takes naming. Model1-Colour-Finish-Angle etc. In Modo these are called Render Passes, not to be confused with AOVs.
Very useful thanks! Would love to know how to set up the renders for the different takes, did you end up doing a tutorial on outputting takes by any chance?
Thank you for this clearly toturial. I have to work with take, and I get instandly a totally mess. I had view some toturials. In no one of these clips told me the guy, when your work in a take finsihed, switch off the auto take modus. Every time I had to clean all single take. Thank you again and many greetings from Germany!
Thanks, Chad! I knew this magic was waiting for me but never took the time to look into it. Now...facing down a client request of rendering 100 still variations of a model I can set it all up and let it run easily within one project file. The "render all takes" is freaking awesome! Kudos and thanks again. Looking forward to the next video on tokens and naming etc.
So glad you showed the manual method because coming from Softimage I had to manually create passes with partitions and overrides. There was no automatic system and I'm glad there wasn't because I'm the kind of person who would forget it's on and just be recording all kind of things I didn't want to. Everyone just assumes they should leave it on AUTO all the time and I think that's a bad move. There's probably no one who works that way who hasn't had to go back and correct some unwanted stuff from takes because they forgot it was on.
Hi, great tut. Just one small correction, the rocking chair was designed by Charles and Ray Eames. The Vitra furniture factory just bought the rights for it. (Credit is due where it's due:)
this is unrelated to the video but i need to ask you guys something. ive been looking everywhere for a guide to rendering bismuth but none exists. you do stuff like these on your stream so i thought you might.
The thing that drives me crazy is when you say 'Maybe the client would like...' followed by a subtle change. In reality its 'I love what you have done but can we try a table instead, maybe it could transform into a chair and then form a particle cloud of even smaller chairs'
Hi there Chad, this video has helped me a lot thourght this time, I got a question I can't seem to find an answer though. Is it possible to modify a shape through takes? I'm trying some kind of stop-motion animation making lots of takes and moving things a little (like takes were photo shoots). I'm trying to unfold a paper but when I edit the shape of the paper, it changes in every take. thanks!!
Hey Chad! Been trying to use these more and more lately. I've been running into an issue using Tokens in the Render Queue. Since the token technically stays the same, C4D adds the iteration tag "_i2" because there are two items in the queue that share the same output path. Any way to utilize takes in the queue? I haven't found any way to disable that function from C4D.
Always overlooked Take System, but can indeed be quite useful, thank you... Chad, are you planning to make a comparison (especially speed-wise)between Octane and Redshift when the latter will be available?
Very welcome tutorial Chad, thank you for sharing! So much so I dub thee St Chad of Ashley and think thou do-est the most informative tuts! ;-) who seconds this !?!
Chad, getting pretty desperate for that Tokens-tutorial ;) Having a tight deadline early this week where this workflow would be sweet to use. Any ideas about when you´ll record it? Really like your tutorials. Feels very adjusted to a professional workflow. Thanks from a C4D+Octane user in Sweden!
Thanks, but after some "googling" I got the hang of it. Soo powerful to implement the take system and tokens into the workflow. Saved me ALOT of time and hassle. Thanks a million for the introduction to the take system!
Thanks for sharing man and this is a great example that even the best can always improve... down to the most obvious things : just copy-paste these texts hahaha !! :)
QUESTION: In regards to the takes "name field" (driver) I was trying to drive those names from motext "text" (DRIVEN) field to save ALOT of some time. I would like to setup the motext to be connected to the "take name" for client review...I could not figure this out. Do you (anyone reading this) have any suggested workarounds for this?
let's say i put 3 camera on my scene 1st one from 0 to 60 then 2nd from 61 to 90 and 3rd one from 91 to 120 now how will i tell my take system to only render those frame those i created for each camera?
TOP COAT QUESTION: i keep trying to install topcoaot that I just bought on a DEMO version of Cinema4D R18 Studio Version. I did exactly as I saw in the tutorial that came with it and NOTHING HAPPENS.. I close c4d and reopen it and nothing in the plugins.. and I do the search thingi and also nothing, abosloelty nothing under topcoat is in the system.. can you please help me...
Chad Nick and Chris - What would we do without you guys - brilliant as always guys (as I am a little dense I will have to watch a few times tho) great stuff - Still building the Mayflower ship here in the UK see you in 2020 www.harwichmayflower.com
I really dislike how this has been implemented and I think that's why it's not used or talked about more often. It took me several hours to get the bloody thing working, pausing your video every few seconds to see what I was doing wrong. Turns out it's just incredibly picky about what layers and parameters you use with it, especially if they're using a plugin. Why make a simple version iteration system like this? Seriously Maxon. Good video as always anyway GSG.

Wow! Thanks! Very useful information!
Very useful thanks! Would love to know how to set up the renders for the different takes, did you end up doing a tutorial on outputting takes by any chance?
Thanks a lot Chad for this tutorial. Super clear! Love your English pronunciation :) (and the contents!)

is there a way to use takes as the ''stage'' object. where i can keyframe which camera is active on a certain moment?
Thanks, Chad! I knew this magic was waiting for me but never took the time to look into it. Now...facing down a client request of rendering 100 still variations of a model I can set it all up and let it run easily within one project file. The "render all takes" is freaking awesome! Matthew Bowden awesome! glad it worked out

Perfect ! Thats definitely going to help me on my 8 camera animation project with different layers visibility for each !
That's a perfect use. I've done several multi-camera animations and Takes can help make that process so easy. Thanks for watching!
Hi, great tut. Just one small correction, the rocking chair was designed by Charles and Ray Eames. The Vitra furniture factory just bought the rights for it. (Credit is due where it's due:)
Nimrod Regev thanks for the correction! beautiful chair!
Nice ! The true power is the marked takes to render feature. I don't even use the render que anymore.
Totally. My next tut will be how to utilize tokens + takes to create a workflow where you never have to name an output again!
Just start learning C4D, found this tutorial, now my hard drive is saved from tons of project file versions.
Thanks!
Just found out about this by accident. Glad I did - thanks for the further explanation!
You're welcome!
Amazing. What is your workstation setup?
this is unrelated to the video but i need to ask you guys something. ive been looking everywhere for a guide to rendering bismuth but none exists. you do stuff like these on your stream so i thought you might.
This was great. I've been using these all wrong. That damn Auto Take!!!!! Thanks Chad.
Very nice tutorial. How many graphic cards did you use?
Chad got a nice room. Looks like a nice place to work in
Much love from Sri Lanka.
Nice video, Chad. Is it possible to combine takes, say to use the 02 alt color with the 02 alt cam?
Needed this today! Such a time saver!
Very handy tutorial. I know layers aren't super sexy, but do you have a tutorial on layers?
Thanks Devin!
Wow, this is extremely useful, no more saving new versions for every "take" (I used to call it version ;) ) I wanted to save.
As always, THANK YOU!
You're very welcome!
Thanks Chad, going to try using Takes tomorrow!
Sweet! Let me know how it works out for you!
Thank you Chad, very useful!
This is great! Did you ever make the video you mentioned in the end? I was hoping you'd cover rendering in this video.
sure he did

Good Overview Chad. I use the take system in place of Maya's render layers. Great way to bust out a beauty, reflection, AO, etc passes.
Glad you liked it Drew! Thanks!
fOR ARCHviz THIS IS AMAZING!
great helpful!!! love u guys
Thanks Chad, very useful tutorial
You are VERY welcome!!
The thing that drives me crazy is when you say 'Maybe the client would like...' followed by a subtle change. In reality its 'I love what you have done but can we try a table instead, maybe it could transform into a chair and then form a particle cloud of even smaller chairs'
Jeeeeeez, mate, that hurts!
i realize I'm kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to watch new series online?
@Travis Sage i use flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Trent Roger definitely, I've been watching on Flixzone for years myself :D
@Trent Roger thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it!!
Great tutorial, Chad! Reminds me a bit of the passes system in ye olde Softimage XSI.
Awesome watching from Kenya
Cool! Thanks for watching!

Glad you liked it Kyle!
digging the workflow great information.
Glad you dig it Joel!
Thanks Chad, well explained video!
You're welcome Qmagix!
Very appreciative to you all at Greyscale Gorila
Can you have different keyframes in different takes?
I love your techniques very helpful Thank you Chad...))
You are welcome!
Awesome tutorial Chad,i think finnaly i will start to use takes:)
Awesome MES, glad it helped!
Thanks. So can you render all the takes in queue? to leave the computer alone all night.
Yes. Exactly.
@@Greyscalegorilla thanksssssssss
That HAY chair is so sick.
We agree!

I will def put out a comparison once Redshift is out
Very welcome tutorial Chad, thank you for sharing!
So much so I dub thee St Chad of Ashley and think thou do-est the most informative tuts! ;-) who seconds this !?!
I am honored. I bow-eth my head.
Chad Ashley the modesty maketh the man (try typing that without auto correct just screwing it up lol)

Technically I'm not due for another tut till next month. Maybe I can do a hangouts live thing or something for everyone to join.
Thanks, but after some "googling" I got the hang of it. Soo powerful to implement the take system and tokens into the workflow. Saved me ALOT of time and hassle. Thanks a million for the introduction to the take system!

Hello, I see your computer will renders all of those things so quickly.. What kind of computer specs do you have?
Check out our resources page for specs. greyscalegorilla.com/resources/
Awesome Thanks!!
This is great!
QUESTION:

I would like to setup the motext to be connected to the "take name" for client review...I could not figure this out. Do you (anyone reading this) have any suggested workarounds for this?
You can do this with Xpresso. Connect the Text output: text, with the MoText input: Text)
thank you a lot !!
why the name of the parrent take name is not override in child take name?
Thanks alot for that!
It helped me alot to organize my projects and my partially very complex bunch of layers. Thumbs up!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you

Take a look at the Stage Object. That should be what you are looking for.

Thanks!
Good tutorials, but 99 percent only for plugins that are very expensive, like Octane, Redshift or Arnold. Pity
nice :)
Thank you!
You do not like Arnold more? )
We are on hiatus. ;)
What can you say about the Redshift?
Thank you!
Why?
Nothing has changed other than the introduction price of C4DtoA is no more.
Thank you, this is just what I needed. I could kiss you.
😘

Pronounced "Vee-tra" ;)
dang, this video came about a week too late for me ... [sheepishly deletes 28 project files]
No shame, use Takes next time! Thanks for watching!
Very useful ! thank you !
