    It was in our minds that this could happen, but we didn't want to believe it. A league wouldn't shut itself down before their inaugural season was finished, we all said. They're not going to leave their employees in the dark.
    On April 2nd, that all changed: The AAF, as we know it, has been suspended. Quite possibly, they will never play another league game again. The storylines that were unfolding throughout the season are now lost. The Orlando Apollos getting the '94 Expos treatment, among other missing endings.
    As much as you would want to root for the league, the organizational and managerial aspects of the AAF were an absolute mess. Costly mistakes multiplied by rushing the league and having no secure funding gave it a premature death.
    What are the aftereffects? Who is truly responsible? This video may answer that... unfortunately.

  • @EdmacZ
    @EdmacZ 5 лет назад +139

    The NFL in its early days was a total shitshow. Teams folded mid-season and they could barely pay their own players. There was no medical BS or guaranteed contracts. There was no free agency either (that didn’t show up until 1993), Except that was well over 100 years ago. The point is The NFL had to put up with a lot of shit to get to where it is.
    I said before for the AAF to survive, they had to deal with some obvious growing pains and may make some sacrifices. They couldn’t hang. They tried to run their league like it was some kind of big thing, and it wasn’t a big thing at all. They had to give it some time to grow. It was going to take YEARS and perhaps DECADES to build it. Alas get-rich quick Capitalism had to win out.
    Get-rich quick never works. Ever.

    • @jesuszamora6949
      @jesuszamora6949 5 лет назад +1

      @Matty Zee Pretty much. IFL survives by being a regional league, and the AFL tried to grow too fast, ending up becoming a joke.

    • @mabo3542
      @mabo3542 5 лет назад +5

      Yeah I mean I get they are playing in massive stadiums but 10.000ish people for brand new teams in a brand new league isn't half bad. Solid foundations to build on at the very least.

    • @SkolneyVikings
      @SkolneyVikings 5 лет назад +5

      Yep, the NFL was around for almost 40 years before it really became that big of a deal nationally.

    • @EdmacZ
      @EdmacZ 5 лет назад +13

      Matty Zee
      And the XFL will crash early on too. There is just NO brand or audience for this to set yourself up like some big time league. The XFL will lose money. Lots of it. The AAF bailed at the first sign of trouble. Weak sauce.
      You have to be in it for the long haul and prepare to make tough choices and sacrifices. I saw no dedication from the AAF and I definitely don’t see it from Vince McMahon and the XFL.
      The NFL had to deal with the Great Depression and World War 2. These assholes quit, and it’s very weak.

    • @chillvibes375
      @chillvibes375 5 лет назад +2

      @Matty Zee yea, you right. people forget, but the NBA had a different name for its first few years. and the idea of playing a game, basketball, as a career, post college, was laughable. like the idea was to get a regular job. playing ball for years as an adult was absurd back then. shit i made instagram in 2014, and it finally took off in 2017....everything takes time to develop. aaf was doomed before it started tho....xfl is next to fail

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 5 лет назад +17

      Dessin Karms the AAF owes nothing because they are bankrupt. They aren’t not paying the players bills because they don’t like them, it’s more that they are over 300M in debt to creditors. They are likely released from existing debts including the creditors and the players. So there isn’t even a case… the league is gone. Poof. There’s no money to get out of them

    • @christophermiller5433
      @christophermiller5433 5 лет назад +11

      In the US, it’s illegal to make binding contracts that you lied about.
      Say, for instance, I told your Union I can support the financial payments for your employees for the next 3 years to operate, you can sign that paperwork saying you will do it. Now, then I close you out of my building and fire you then file for bankruptcy. That turns into info people can access (credit reports and the like, Tree got the info somehow...) showing I actually had no financial revenue to pay employees, even though I told them I could.
      Now, the Union sues me for false pretenses, the court case rules towards the employees (players) and bans the employers (executives of AAF) from operating as a CEO, CFO, or some other form of business leadership via the SEC (like with Elon Musk being CEO and Tesla ‘threatening’ going private, they forced him to step down and is currently under their microscope again for possibly violating it). This could be argued as a breach in a contract and a direct violation of SEC laws.
      The players most likely wouldn’t get any money, or bills paid for. However, it could bar the architects of the AAF from doing anything like it again.

    Back in the mid-90's, I remember there being a huge amount of buzz regarding a potential new women's pro basketball league. Every previous attempt had ended in catastrophe, with the last one, the Liberty Basketball Association, folding after _the very first game.)_ But this time would be different, we were assured. The fanbase was there! The money was there! The smart leadership was there! Most importantly, there were power players who had a major interest in proving that women's pro basketball could be a success. The was finally optimism that this time, this would work.
    1996 came around. Big news! We would soon have...
    _...two_ new women's pro basketball leagues.
    My reaction was immediate and ferocious. "NO! NO! DON'T DILUTE THE PRODUCT! DON'T DIVIDE THE FANBASE! DON'T CREATE A BITTER RIVALRY! PROOF OF CONCEPT! YOU NEED PROOF OF CONCEPT, DAMMIT! FIRST ESTABLISH THAT *ONE* LEAGUE CAN SUCCEED, THEN, *IF* THERE'S DEMAND, SOMEONE CAN CREATE A RIVAL! ONE FREAKING STEP AT A TIME! YOU'RE KILLING THE GOLDEN GOOSE BEFORE IT'S EVEN HATCHED, YOU GODDAM MORONS!!"
    By some unfathomable miracle, one of them, the Women's National Basketball Association, survived. This unbelievable hubris, thinking that it was possible to create _two_ viable leagues, could've very easily torpedoed both of them, and it's nothing short of a goddam miracle that it didn't.
    I mention this because when I look at what happened to the AAF, I see the exact same hubris, the exact same ignorance and arrogance and utter disregard for the most basic common sense. Get funding guarantees in writing and have your lawyer make sure they're ironclad! Don't compete against March Madness and the NHL playoffs! Have a clear, coherent mission statement and stick to it! Determine right off the bat just how much the NFL is willing to help and adjust your long-term strategy accordingly! Find the markets that will pay to watch second-tier football _and_ put the season in a time of year where the weather won't be a big issue there!
    The worst part is that the thing that usually kills these upstart leagues (and in fact played a big part in killing the first XFL), the quality of play, wasn't too shabby. These players would've been more than a match for most college teams, maybe even the CFL. If the brass had some sense and were willing to put the actual time and effort to give this a realistic chance of succeeding, it probably would have. Instead we got the same useless arrogant know-nothing starry-eyed millionaires who think they can just will this thing into being, with depressingly predictable results.

    I REALLY didn't expect to be saying this, but I'm very disappointed to be losing this.
    The product on the field was a whole lot better than I think most of us anticipated. Some of those games were surprisingly choose and dramatic, the mandatory 2-point conversions actually affected games, and I really wanted to see some successful 4th and 15 conversions.
    Sure, this wasn't the NFL, but I didn't want it to be. Sometimes it's more fun to watch something that doesn't dominate every media property it touches, so it feels fresh and authentic.

    There was a collection of AAF trading cards (as in, like baseball cards, it's not like they were trying to create a new Pokemon) on sale at my local Meijer and Walmart for about 20 bucks (not that crazy considering there were 100 cards per pack). That shit has stood there for a solid 2 years, rebated constantly, but just gathering dust.
    I honestly saw the AAF as more another attempt at an NFL rival like, say, the CFL, rather than a farm league like NFL Europe- and in that level, considering the NFL was at a Patriots-hogging nadir, I was openly hoping they'd succeed at that. Maybe just maybe, if they were successful, they'd force the NFL to up their game to make it more appealing to audiences (the whole national anthem protest is already a bad hit to their reputation, but the lack of parity doesn't help- when there's only one team that utterly dominates their opponents, and the league is content with them just doing so, it's not that appealing for other teams to watch, if you know they wouldn't be able to finish the job. Essentially, the Titans may have been the league's savior, odd enough to say.) Unfortunately, a league I had such high hopes for, ended up another cliche failure in the piles of defunct wannabes like the USFL, FXFL, UFL, World Football League- hell, we can throw the countless arena football leagues, including the ACTUAL Arena Football League- that litter the football landscape.

Talking about a new league that kicked off that year was great, but I can't argue how much of a shitshow it was. And I wasn't the only one into this. My radio's general manager saw the AAF was folding and said the first thing they thought of was me and my show.

McMahan has a huge advantage over the AAF in terms of the ability to prepare, mistakes they can learn from, etc.
