Thanks you Tim! As i continue to make progress, i find one of the struggles i have is “getting lost” on what chord I’m on. Like if i was just trying to riff on a common progression like, say, the Alice in Wonderland or Autumn Leaves progression, i will just suddenly find myself out of time and lost on what chord i should be on. So i basically have to reset. That’s my latest stumbling block as i’m moving forward. So i’ll go really slowly to fix it, but eventually speed up and will screw up again somewhere. I know enough time will fix it, but do you have tips for how you got over this? Especially if you transpose a tune to abunch of new keys.

Try stripping this WAY down. Try this:
Take whatever tune you’re practicing, only on one note. For instance, play only the 3rd of each chord change. Do that a bunch of times until the form is engrained in your head.
Try just playing root notes of each chord as well.
Also, and this is probably MOST beneficial…
find a bunch of classic recordings of the tune you’re focusing on and listen. Count the measures as they’re playing. Call out each section as you get to it. Do this over and over and over again. The issue is your inner ear can’t quite HEAR the song form yet. I hope this might help!

Thank you so much for the great advice! I’ll adjust my approach to that. As I slowly get better, I keep trying to run ahead of myself since I’ll have these moments where it all clicks, then reality sets in and I’m back to walking.

Do you have any further resources of when they would say Bb-/G vs G-7(b5)?

I would just search “Barry Harris Minor with 6 in the bass” here on RUclips

Sorry … but (on lick #2) we gotta report you for stealin that slick Sonny Clark “last bar” ending (the four-to-flat 3 hip double-stop thing)
See “Blue Minor” if confused 😂
