You know... you rock man. I have been trying this for two days or so, but I didn't quite get it, I understanded the theory but I didn't knew what was I supposed to do, while watching your lesson it took me just some seconds to do it.
thank you so much, you're the only youtube guitar teacher who's been able to teach me pinch and harp harmonics so that I can actually understand how to do them. cheers
Yes you can. You have to use a pick and hold the pick between your right hand thumb and middle finger. Now when you hit the string with the pick make sure your right hands index finger is slightly touching the string at the hormonics position then right after you hit the pick (about in miliseconds) release your index finger. That's about it, enjoy...
I like his lessons they are helpfyl and I just learned this new bit of information, if it wern't for this youtube posting how long would it have been before I knew about this? Thank you now I am one step in the long journey toward reaching a musical potential on the guitar Peace!
Not mostly for classical... It was first used by Chet Akins in the 1950s, but was revived by Lenny Breau, the true creator of picking harmonics IMPO... It was done for jazz, but now is used mostly by Classical guitarist nowadays and the long ways of picking harmonics for jazz is rare to be seen.
It's important to remember that you can't just lay your index finger of your right hand down on the higher fret. You *must* pluck behind it with your thumb or it will not sound. Some people forget that somehow.
@sleeperfrowner im not sure if this is what you mean, but if your guitar doesn't have 19 frets (which you would touch lightly to get the harmonic sound), you can also just imagine where the 19th fret would be if the fretboard continued and touch there. (this goes with nearly any fret)
Quite good. I've trained it before, not with chords, but with some melody played by the left hand. I am very far from getting such clean sound as you do.
wow cool!!! I've been wanting to learn those for months!!!!!!!! thanks buddy!!! Do you know Tommy Emmanuel at all? I think you might find some really interesting songs in his repertoire!! Here are my favorites: Since we met Angelina Classical Gas Walls Mombasa cheers!
Hi Justin any chance of the chords demo to the song....Dont know why I didnt call from the singer Norah Jones. Thanking you very much and I do appreciate you being you.
Would I be right in assuming heavier guage strings make this harder? I can do it fairly easy on the high strings but the lower ones are more difficult.
dude,do you press it lightly or do you just put you finger on top of the fret?when i pluck it i just get a muted note...any good idea to make it not a muted note?
@LinkBulletBill Whatever floats your boat. I found that I like to use my ring finger. I can't use my thumb sometimes as it might have a thumb pick on it. =)
listen i need som help. i dunno y but my harmonics for an open string only work over the 13th fret - which means i get a harmonic for a difference of 13 frets. weird huh? can anyone tell me why?
you can use your pinky finger to pick instead of your thumb... I would prefer it to be shown as a jazz/classical technique, instead of just classical...

Oh man, thanks a bunch. I havea grade 7 guitar exam in 2 weeks and there's this harmonic study that I couldn't play. Hopefully I can now, cheers!
whenever i come across a song that uses a technique i don't know about Justin saves my day!
for classical guitar, or when they need a pick and don't have one...
Great Lesson! I've wanted to learn more about harmonics for a long time...
this is what i've been looking for, i've never known how to really produce those high pitch harmonics, thanks a lot!
Dude, I've been looking for a lesson on this. You're a legend!
Dude. THANK YOU so much. Concise and correct instructions for a really neat technique!

Wow, this is so cool. I hadn't thought of this, I only ever play harmonics on open strings, but touching different frets for different harmonics :)
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! Great video for beginners like myself.
Thank you so much. I finally learned how to do harmonics.

i like the technic, thanks

gracias por esto i will try it is a litle dificult for mi i am from Guatemala Central Amerca
thnx man i was wondering how that was done
Is it 12 frets higher because that is half way down the string? (is it half way down the string?)
you are the best..brit love you
Is it easier to make harmonics on steel stringed guitar?
Because when i try on my nylon stringed it only sounds on the 12th fret
thank you!
Very good.
What do you do if you don't have the time grow your nails like classical guitarists do?
@leavemealone2006
but i still consider it a classical/jazz thing... But still Lenny Breau reinvented it in his unique way.
Justin you're a fucking blessing for the world.
@LinkBulletBill Whatever floats your boat. I found that I like to use my ring finger. I can't use my thumb sometimes as it might have a thumb pick on it. =)
harmonics work only on the12th, 7th, and 5th frets of my gutar. how ddo you do it on other frets?
@sansaephanh
sounds beautiful a classical guitar!
wow last comment was 5 years ago
ty sir.. .. helpful :)
You can also sound harmonics 7, 5, 4, 3, 2.6, 2.3 frets up, etc, but it gets harder.
thank u so much
good. great. awesome. cool.
listen i need som help. i dunno y but my harmonics for an open string only work over the 13th fret - which means i get a harmonic for a difference of 13 frets. weird huh? can anyone tell me why?
@ilmatteo95
No that was the prob, I was a beginner at that time, now I can!

Very useful, thank you.
Rosanella :-)
~Very good~
Thank you so much! Now i can finally play those sexy harmonics:D
you can use your pinky finger to pick instead of your thumb...

ah so cool sound
great!!!!!
thanks Justin!! XD
thkx
Just on one hand, he needs them. As do I, sounds so much better. Its odd for me now, I am seriously bummed when I break a nail heh.
can you do this with short fingernails on an electric guitar?
I learned to do the harmonic with the middle and pointing finger, think it'seasier
not bad. Good tricks for the fools who dont know the spelling of guitars!!! ha ha keep it up Dude
Great:)
do i have to press hard? i touch it and no sound is heard
yes!
wow das nice
Muy bueno, era lógico, pero no me había dado cuenta
@flyndrefitte haha ..me too ! btw, this video is great
@MonkeysNutsacks
could of wrote Lenny Breau harmonic lesson... since lenny was the real creator IMPO...
cheers
that was a good one XD
@LinkBulletBill
Yeah, I just wanted to point that out :P
@lolohour
Both are equally eat IMPO...
Does it matter?
at 2:26 it sounds like he says "fuck the string" hahaha lol
:P
classical style of guitar playing. instead of a plectrum, the fingernails are used for plucking.
wooooooooow!!!!
cool!!1
@ilmatteo95 You are not alone lol. I dont get it either.
@1337pur3
more like kind of impossible...
at 1:13, did he say "I'm fucking it?"
