- What a joy, what a privilege -- what great stories! We sat down at ICP just ahead of "The Decisive Moment" retrospective with Agnès Sire, Director of the Fondation Cartier-Bresson, to get just a small taste of the man behind the myth. To learn more, please visit www.henricartie... To see "The Decisive Moment" retrospective at the ICP Museum at 250 Bowery, New York, NY (www.icp.org) -- and if you're really into it, I can point you in a couple of additional directions.

Timeless interview. Its 2022.September. Was good then, still good today. Thank you :-)
😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
This is wonderful; what a privilege that must have been. Very few high level academics have much to do with social media, at least not willingly, but interviews like this show that it can also be serious and thoughtful. Thanks, and congratulations.
Chris Routledge It was indeed a privilege... and a joy!
Just....WOW is right! WOW! Thank you SO MUCH for making this video with Agnèz Sire. Hugh, you are taking the social media video format to another level of excellence! I'm just floored....thank you!
Stephen Scharf I am grateful for your continuing encouragement, Stephen!
So good to know Cartier-Bresson’s reaction to the phrase “The Decisive Moment”. I like Agnes Sire very much… I agree. There are many many variables in making images. Proper job. Thank you… Oh, Three Blind Men and an Elephant is so fitting for you…
😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
Such a wonderful interview about a beautiful man. And - as usual - Hugh's interviewing skills shine through. And that magic moment at the end, "Stop futzing with this thing." Wonderful!
I cannot remember when last I enjoyed an interview this much. Looking forward to many more. No pressure.
Merwe Erasmus ;)
As I begin my journey in to photography (yet again), this was a welcome interjection of gems and insight, that I wager would not have been found anywhere else. Thank you both for a wonderful talk.
Your newest interview series are a very valuable addition to the youtube photography community and right up there with Ted Forbes' old videos about the art and not the craft and tech. Thank you.
parshua Ted is a great guy, and I’m privileged to call him a friend - so major thanks! I’ve just started to look at his series on a Vivian Maier - good stuff.
Well, this is brilliant. This episode in particular, but also the new series as a whole. Thank you!
Thank you!
One of your best interviews, thanks so much. I have the book, "The Decisive Moment," and enjoy it very much.
🙏🏻😊
Loved this interview, especially the clarification of the meaning of the French title for "The Decisive Moment", which leads me to recommend the book "Sextet: T. S. Eliot & Truman Capote & Others" by John Malcolm Brinnin.
In the chapter "Just Like Java" the author describes his journey with Cartier-Bresson 16,000 miles across America and back as guide, chauffeur, camera assistant and note-taker for the commentary to accompany H C-B's photos in a book of the trip. By the time they return to New York you'll be as exhausted as the author. Easy to find on the used market.
Cheers
Thanks so much for the recommendation - I will definitely check it out!
Perhaps it will inspire a separate video 😁 Best wishes to you
You are elevating RUclips content to a much more important and meaningful level, Excellent. Please keep expanding beyond equipment and products. I learned a lot. Thank you!
Kevin Lance Daniels So glad you appreciate it!
Beautiful interview !!! Very juicy! Excellent as always, a pleasure for me to see this type of content. Thanks and greetings from Argentina.
Lucas Dalle Crode Hello, Argentina!
That was so good. Thank you!
Insightful and informative. Excellent interview, Hugh. Thank you!
Bjarne Erick ...and there’s so much more to know!
That was a wonderful interview. Thanks.
I'm a new photographer and this interview is pure gold, pure inspiration. Thanks.
JuanReasonToSmile so happy you found us!
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions yeah, I got to know you with your Leica videos. I wish I had the money to follow your advice, hahaha.
Anyway, right now shooting with fuji, looking forward to seeing the x-t3
JuanReasonToSmile Fuji’s got some
great cameras and fantastic glass!
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions definitely agree. Still, one day I'll get a Leica!!! One day!!!
You certainly have pull. How did you manage to have a sit down with Agnes Sire? Amazing!! This video is an educational course by itself!! This video is priceless, thank you very much for educating me, for being so committed and professional with your productions. 🙏
I have more passion than anything else, Julio. Always appreciate your encouragement!
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions passion that’s the key. You are certainly very passionate, an example to follow
Excellent interview.
🙏🏻😊🖖🏻
This is a fascinating conversation about such an incredible artist.
Fantastic interview Hugh. I went to the exhibit on the night of her talk at ICP and got to see that too. Were you there? Really enjoyed it. The show, and Elliott Erwitt's, were wonderful. I love ICP. Miss their incredible bookstore, however.
Douglas Gottlieb So glad you took the opportunity to de the show in person! We weren’t there on opening night but two days earlier. I’m telling you, if I could live around the corner I’d hang out there every day.
I went this week, and learned that they'll be moving the museum to consolidate the school, archives, etc to under one roof. I don't know the timeline.
Mike Jett Photography Mark has told me the same thing.
Congratulations on a great video!! Please try to do more of these videos. Would love to hear similar conversations about other photographers such as Eggleston, Winogrand, or Klein. Good job!!
Ole Melkevik Thanks - working on it!
Bloody hell. You lucky dog! Very inspirational except of course for the audio. Having just returned from a 3 week romp through Europe I fear my sense of smell is not quite yet tuned. Time to plan another trip. This time for a year or three :-)
Nice to see you here, Dennis I want to be you when I grow up!
If I ever head to Philly, I need to arrange a coffee with you. PS, still shooting my GX85 and 15mm.
GREAT combo!
I really enjoyed this. You're an excellent interviewer, great work!
Frederik Grønlund Clausen it was great fun!
That's what I call a conversation -- fascinating! My question is about the arrangement of the pictures in the exhibit: the frames don't seem to be aligned so well. Is there an explanation for that?
I’d say they are perfectly aligned! 😊🖖🏻
Stellar interview. I applaud the way you've been expanding the scope of your vlog (is that what it's called?) and with this post and the Leica series and the photographer interviews you've done - you're providing us with a master class in photography. My sincere thanks!
VIDJACK :)
I read some prefaces she wrote for HCB's books and I think this person knows precisely about HCB himself and has a broad artistic knowledge of photography.
In a documentary by name "Just Plain Love", Henri Cartier Bresson says: "If you want it, you get nothing. Just be receptive and it happens". Pure magic if you ask me. Thx
Roham Rasai I will check it out!
What a story of a great man.. I never knew that his wife is Indonesian! I'm Indonesian. Is there any documentation of his work in Indonesia? '47 just a couple of years after we declared Independence, but still fighting our freedom from VOC. I would like to see his work if there's any ... Nevertheless, thank you for educating us more and more. God bless you.
I'm sure there is - I'm just not familiar with it. Please: let me know what you find in your search...
I like his interviewing style, making sure that the discussion was about hcb and her, not him.
Just wow...you said it.
Well done Hugh. Love the series
Thanks - I love doing it!
Well done ! interesting to take the time...
I’ll be in Paris next week. I must visit the Fondation
So much fun! What a joy!
Very deep. I love it!!!!
Richard I love that you love it! :)
She is an encyclopedia of photographic knowledge
Yes!
This is photography!!!!
Great ending...
Ian Robertson Right? What fun, what an honor!
