      @@milforddentist thank you for replying, so what happened was, I used sensodyne toothpaste because it was the only white paste I had (I always use gel paste because I don’t like the white kind) and didn’t know it had fluoride in it which then really exacerbated the nerves that were more exposed than normal. I told my dentist it was an emergency now and they got me in two days ago to put my permanent crown on. It’s still really hypersensitive so I can’t drink anything cold or eat on that side at all, it still hurts a lot and the whole area is angry. I’m not sure how long this type of sensitivity and soreness lasts after a permanent crown is put on, the dentist said it’s bad the first 2 days and then it calms down so I hope that’s the way it goes for me. Do you typically see the first 2 days are the worst for patients who get a permanent crown put on? Not asking for medical advice, just your opinion on what you have observed in patients on average

      Mayra, glad to hear this helped! Is your crown a "temporary" acrylic crown or the real thing? The technique described in this video works well for both...underlying conditions that loosen a definitive crown ( cavities, cracks) could react to the toothpaste producing sensitivity. I wouldn't say omninous but, yes, may be diagnostic of an issue. Meanwhile please enjoy this 4th of July!

    • @milforddentist
      @milforddentist  3 года назад

      Koichi,
      Making the call of a loose crown may be a bit more tricky than you think. The crown may appear loose but actually be secured to a loose tooth, a broken piece of the tooth or a post/large filling below. Its best to be cautious or more serious damage may occur - see your dentist. If you feel pain when moving the “loose crown” stop. With that said a common professional method - gentle - involves a hard gelatin that I soften in hot water- patient bites down- allow to cool (hard/grippy) and ask patient to open (should be resistance- hard to open at first). Think of hard candy when you’re a kid- you bite down and have a hard time opening- Jolly rancher or hard taffy. A loose crown will often respond to this. Yes, I feel strange recommending candy as a solution (brush your teeth after ) Good luck Koichi. I hope all is well with you and your family.

      Kamiya, I’m so glad the video helped you and your crown is in place. Generally speaking, this technique does a great job of securing the crown - usually effective for at least the weekend or longer. If you feel the crown is loose/not secure its ok to leave out. I just had a crown to come off and some of the tooth structure came off also. There is not much tooth left to glue it to. Went to my dentist yesterday and he glued it back but today it as popped off again. Can a dentist do a buildup on that tooth structure to help hold the crown on place. I am on a tight budget and cannot afford an implant now. I have the crown. Also what would be the strongest dental cement I can buy? Thank you!

    • @milforddentist
      @milforddentist  3 года назад

      Vivkie, sorry to hear about your situation. Over the last year dentists everywhere are seeing more cases like yours (stress = increases clenching/grinding). If little tooth remains (broken tooth structure) it may be very challenging for your dentist to re-use this crown. Unfortunately, a stronger cement, whether over the counter or professional, would likely result in the crown coming off again too. Vivkie my concerns include a habitually loose crown that may be swallowed or inhaled. Also important to get a game plan with your dentist to avoid infection. I hope this helps - all the best my friend.

    • @milforddentist

      Keys Le, I'm glad you found the video and comments helpful! Several factors effect the retention of the temporary crown including the quantity of tooth ( surface area) available. Even if an individual is careful to avoid eating on the temp crown unconcious habits such as clenching/grinding may come in to play. It sounds like your dental assistant is going the extra yard by supplying you with a take home kit and , with good reason, if you feel it becoming loose. Don, good morning. It sounds like you have more than just passing knowledge about dental material and terminology . UV bonding agents/luting cements are often "dual cured" ( light or no light) but not always. Note: cementing a post is important and necessarily light deficient. Some cements are pretty finicky with preparation steps prior to cementation too. In your case ( missing back teeth) great cementation is more important because of the added burden. My recommendation is to not try this at home. A post and crown is more advanced and damage to the tooth/swallowing the assembly are real possibilities. I understand the urge to try but may lead to more headaches. Don, I hope this helps. All the best to you for the holidays!

      @@mariezhong6001, good afternoon. Temporary cement is usually very grippy and stable- not likely part of the issue unless you feel movement to the contrary.
      Would you describe yourself as a clencher/grinder? Perhaps wear a night guard ( bite splint)? This type of activity (“bruxing”) can put a lot of pressure on a new crown. Hi D Mann - yes, the same retentive principles apply so this quick fix (toothpaste) should help. Kao, good morning. A 22-year-old crown is considered “old” and because you see what could be damaged tooth underneath please be careful with your short term plan. Are you able to insert the crown and establish a good bite? If so this is acceptable, short term, while you wait to have your dentist look at this tooth. The temptation may be to insert the crown and forget “ out of sight out of mind” but the issues below could lead to bigger problems. Yes, gently clean the tooth prior to insertion. Madhuchhanda, good afternoon. Is this crown a temporary or permanent restoration? Generally speaking a crown is tricky to remove. If you have access to a water pick or some type of oral irrigation ( syringe) this could be handy to flush the food particles out. As you have probably guessed a crown that allows food to be trapped is easily allowing bacteria too - please see your dentist soon to address this before bigger issues ( pain/infection) arise. Ian, sorry to hear about your challenges managing the Covid year and losing your crown too. A home fabricated temporary crown would be very difficult to accomplish and not a good option. You are correct to have concerns of possible infection. Please consider seeing your dentist for an exam only (least expensive) and an action plan. It’s possible the crown loosened because of mechanical damage (cracks) or cavities. Moving forward the treatment plan could range significantly from “non restorable” to “new crown”. If a dental school is within driving distance this may be a good option to pursue for care on a budget. Good luck!

      @angel rodriguez - keeping the temps “in place” is important but “locking them in” ( did you make these yourself?) usually refers to overly contoured/large interproximal contacts. Temps that are made in this way compromise the hygienic properties ( as you pointed out :) ). Not necessary to do so - an ideal temp will predictably stay in place and allow for good hygiene. Please note: This is a primarily a remedy for a "temporary crown".
      Toothpaste creates a thin adhesive layer between the crown and the tooth providing a slight tackiness/sticky. Looking beyond cement there are other factors at play too - like the quantity of tooth ( short vs tall)) and form ( tapered vs. parallel).
      It's important to note that this method is a temporary fix /not a substitute for professional dental care.
      Drugs stores carry decent temp cements too.

    Thanks, I never would have thought of using toothpaste. I did use it to fill nail holes in my dorm room walls at the end of the semester. Lol

    This does not work, even from a basic material science perspective there’s nothing in toothpaste that creates an adhesion effect aside from the vacuum created from pushing the crown to the tooth. Any small amount of chewing or drinking would negate that effect. This is a potentially dangerous recommendation as someone could think their crown is secured and accidentally swallow it and I’m not aware of any studies that demonstrate safety effectivity with nerve tissue seeing a prolonged exposure to toothpaste. Some of which are composed of toxic chemicals that are meant to be quickly washed off. This whole video should be taken down.

      Tetra, I understand your concerns regarding the toothpaste method for a temporary crown fix.
      You're right about the material properties of toothpaste - it's certainly not a true dental adhesive. The degree of tooth structure available (surface area) and the degree of parallelism of the preparation walls are significant factors in the retention of a temporary crown. A temporary cement, of any kind, is more/less successful based on these factors alone.
      The tricky part of a self-help video is anticipating the many scenarios an individual may present with. If in doubt leave the temporary crown off & wait for professional help. It’s important to emphasize this suggestion is intended as a short term temporary measure for situations where no other options are available, like being out of town.
      In my years of experience, it has worked well but the risk of swallowing the crown is always a concern, which is why this method should be used with caution and common sense (assessing the degree of tooth available- if broke off do not attempt). It's not a replacement for professional dental care.
      Tetra- “Dentemp Recap-it Cap and Crown Repair kits” are available and do have more adhesive qualities/available at many drug stores - link provided in my video description. Tetra, please know my patients are very important to me and, by extension, those that have a dental emergency abroad. My intention is to help - sorry for any consternation. I appreciate your input and the opportunity to clarify. Wishing you the best.

    I used cookie dough - it worked better than just toothpaste - I used no eggs tho - so just cookie dough, and chocolate.

    What is your method to re-seat a loose crown? I can’t imagine trying to “pry it out”!?! Shudder!! By the way, this is a permanent crown after a root canal. (The tooth - upper molar- had a crack)

      Hi @ T.Carter, in my office the techniques are gentle both for the patient and the tooth- no prying allowed! You mentioned a loose permanent crown ( after a root canal) - does the crown have some "wiggle" to finger pressure or did it come completely off?

    • @tonic3972
      @tonic3972 3 года назад

      @@milforddentist Yes. There is side to side wiggle. The roof of the mouth side seems to be the loose side.

      @T. Carter, Generally a loose crown can be coaxed off with gentle finger pressure- on the other hand a "wiggly" crown may indicated its adhering to a filling ( may be loose) or post. The movement is indicative of a broken seal which allows food/bacteria to enter the tooth. Catching this early saves a lot of problems later- It's a great time to call your dentist. I hope this helps - good luck!
