All these steps were insightful and gave me the confidence I needed to make the transition from a USG/CloudKey to my UDM. The screens are a bit different now that we are on new console and network versions, however the general idea is still the same. I ran into a bit of trouble because my CloudKey was running an Early Access version of the Network App (v7.4.145) and my new UDM had the Official version of the Network App (7.3.83), so unfortunately, I had to have my CloudKey forget (un-adopt) each network device and have my UDM re-adopt them rather than restoring a backup of the Network App. But this proved to be very simple. The only headache from that re-adoption was renaming each device via the UniFi console (a minor inconvenience).
Thanks for the video. Things definitely look different in Ver 7.x but the process seems to be about the same. I got the controller, Network, and Protect apps/settings all moved to a UDM Pro from a CK2 and USG very easily after watching this.

Thanks for the great video! My UDM Pro is arriving soon and I needed a good step-by-step setup tutorial. Will USG even appear in the new configuration after UDM Pro adoption is completed? Should the USG be removed at any point from the configuration? Thanks in advance.
First of all great video! I have one question, I have different network controller versions (on UDM v. 5.14.22 and ond 1st gen Cloud key v. 6.0.23) .... and I dont know how to correct that. Where can I update just the network controller on UDM PRO to the latest version? Or do I need to reinstall the firmware (I have latest v 1.8.0)?
So when I did the upgrade, I did this via SSH. I am going to be releasing a video this week on how to upgrade the network controller via SSH. Keep an eye out for it. As for your firmware, that is the latest version so there’s no need to do anything with that.
I don't get the cabling at the start, just to confirm, you connect the wan port from the UDM to any LAN port on the current network, and you run an ethernet cable from any lan port to your computer? its that it?
Thanks for this. Only critique is that you kind of blurred over how you plugged in the UDM at first. when you said plugged into the "existing network," you meant you plugged it into the existing LAN on an open port, not the existing WAN. Can tell from how you ended the video. That was really the critical piece for me, I was curious if I was going to have to take down the network before configuring the UDM, and clearly the answer is no :) Good reminder to check my firmware version, too - I just updated the cloud key last week, so we'll have to see how this goes. I have a gen 1 cloud key, so fingers crossed....
Hi, I saved the config locally on my machine. Then when restoring back to the UDM Pro you select the file locally from your machine. Hope that makes sense.
Hi great video. Just wondering, when you mention plugging it in to the WAN port does it have to be the WAN from the site I plan to deploy at? I was hoping to set this all up at home first (plug the UDM Pro to the WAN / Lan at home) updating the software and installing the config file from my deployed cloudkey at my business. Then take it to my business so the only real downtime is the adoption process. Will this work or will I still have to do the initial install process at my business due to my ISP provided static IPs and such? I am mainly trying to find a way to keep the downtime to the bare minimum, thanks your help is much appreciated!
So can I just pull out the hdd and put this into the UDM pro? Or do I need to format it? Also will the cloud key after factory resetting is this then safe to sell off?
If you take your HDD out youll need to format it and will lose all of the data on there. You're better off selling the cloud key with the HDD and getting another one.
Thanks for the video I prefer to run the updates in the middle of the day at least for the NVR as it takes 3 minutes to do so and I don't want to lose recordings during the night period.
I am getting ready to do this and to just be clear, I connect the UDM Pro WAN port into an available port on my existing Ubiquiti switch. This will allow me to Update the UDM PRO firmware and transfer settings from my existing cloud key local backup. I would like to give my new UDM Pro the same IP address that the existing USG that I am removing has. Is there some guidance you can provide on how to do this and avoid conflict with the existing USG. I guess the question is when to remove existing USG?
The setup for the UDM Pro had differed slightly since this video. The reason for plugging it in was to give it an internet connection as you could not go another further without it. I can seem to login in after update. I had an account and I was migrating from a cloud key gen 1 and a USG. After setup I get an login error despite having a pre-existing account. Any suggestions? Thanks good video
You plugged the UDM Pro it into a lan port of a switch for setting up? And how did You migrate Unifi Protect? The setting can be migrated in the same way, but how can I migrate the videos?
I plugged the UDM Pro into the WAN port just to give it internet access. I have not migrated unifi protect yet, however in a previous older migrations (unifi video) you were not able to migrate videos. I will be working on a protect to protect migration video soon (and the possibilities)
@@InsideWire Ah, okay. But when I plug the UDM Pro into the WAN port I have to setup the PPoE credentials first to get internet. So I think it is better to plug it into a LAN port first for updating and restore the backup. Then I can replace the USG with the ready setup UDM Pro. Perhaps I can do the same with the Unifi Protect: restore the backup and put the harddrive from the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus into the UDM Pro.
@@MathiasBosmanBE The migration from USG to UDM Pro is a nightmare! And video migration is impossible. First it is not possible to import a backup from USG, because the UDM Pro is on version 5.x and can not be upgraded to 6.x via user interface. So, when you hang the UDM Pro via WAN port in to your LAN to get internet for the update, you are not possible to get into the UDM via SSH. But when you hang it into your LAN via a LAN port you are able to SSH into the UDM but not able to update the firmware to 6.x. At the end I was able to update the firmware and get the UDM Pro up and running. But I wasn’t able to migrate the videos.
@@GerhardAEUhlhorn I had that problem too but after upgrading the controller firmware through SSH I could restore the backup. I did run into A LOT of problems with the VLAN's I had set up. I also had to upgrade the UDMP's firmware and the problems resolved themselves.
Great vid! If I update my UDM-Pro to the latest firmware and controller OS ver, and then restore from my settings backup off my Gen 1 CK older Controller OS, would that still work?
After the migration, can you confirm what IP address the new controller (in the UDM) has compared with the old controller? E.g. if the old controller was 192.168.1.1 with the USG on 192.168.1.254? Did the new controller and gateway both share 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254? or retain their existing adresses? Thanks!
Once I restored the backup file and the UDM pro rebooted. I changed all the cables over, so I didn’t check the see what IP address the USG had. However the UDM pro should retain all the information that was on the USG this includes IP address and Gateway.
My network is using the 10.x.x.x range. Out of the box the UDM pro is on the 192.x.x.x range. Once I restored the backup to my UDM pro it gave it an IP the USG was using on the 10.x.x.x range.. Not sure I follow what you mean by are they the same now?
@@InsideWire in my current setup, my CloudKey is 192.168.1.1, and the management IP of my USG is 192.168.1.254. Given that the UDM is both the controller and gateway, I don’t think it can have two addresses, so it must inherit one or the other after migration?
Ah yes, now I see the problem. You cannot have a conflicting ip on the network. Perhaps plug a machine directly into the UDM pro and give it a new ip. Or set the UDM pro up via your phone.
I didn’t really come across and issue like this. The only thing I can think of at this time is when restoring your backup ensure your old USG is uninstalled. Or set the up for it before restoring.
Uninstalled or unplugged? i think i have the same issue. Here’s my set up: ISP Router : 192.168.1.1 USG : xx.88.1 UCK : xx.88.3 Laptop: set at 192.168.1.4 Now, upon restoring from the saved back up. I can seem to login in after update. I had an account and I was migrating from a cloud key gen 1 and a USG. After setup I get an login error despite having a pre-existing account. Any suggestions? Thanks good video
Got it never mind and thanks again
Glad you got it sorted 🙌
@@GerhardAEUhlhorn did this work for you? I'm not sure when to disconnect the old USG
The CK Gen 1 need to be running the same version or higher. So if it's not, it won't work and will throw as Error
@@InsideWire thanks!
@@InsideWire thanks for your reply. Are they both the same now?
Or set the UDM pro up via your phone.
nice thank you
Welcome 😊
Thanks 😊
Welcome 😊
Hello,
I try to migrate as you do but my UDM didn’t grab the USG IP address. Do you have an idea of the issue?
I didn’t really come across and issue like this. The only thing I can think of at this time is when restoring your backup ensure your old USG is uninstalled. Or set the up for it before restoring.
Uninstalled or unplugged? i think i have the same issue.
Here’s my set up:
ISP Router : 192.168.1.1
USG : xx.88.1
UCK : xx.88.3
Laptop: set at 192.168.1.4
Now, upon restoring from the saved back up. It just doesn’t push through. All I get is an error, it doesn’t display anything of the set up page where it is actually adopting the APs, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI,
I updated the entire network and updated the Dream Machine SE to the newest versions.
then I downloaded a backup from my Cloud Key Gen 2-Plus
When I tried up restore the backup to the Dream Machine SE, it says
"the file is from a different console type"
Do you have any ideas on what I need to do ?
notes:
cloud key gen 2-Plus
Dream Machine SE
thank you
