I remember yahtzee arguing over a review saying that "indie game" doesn't mean anything anymore. Kind of a moot point but I think he's unto something, we need new labels
Also, if you look it up on Google, the developer of the Crysis series, Crytek, is an indie studio. But does that make Crysis an indie game? It had better graphics than Call of Duty at the time.
There are indie studios under Take-Two Interactive, Sony, Atari, Microsoft. Well, there are even games outright made by Microsoft studios (which are not indie studios) that are considered indie games. The term is largely arbitrarily used.
The publisher thing really muddies the waters, it depends on what influence the publisher had on development. Like, even Stardew Valley was originally published by Chucklefish before Concerned Ape took over that.
I guess going back to Octopath traveller, it was made between studios but all intents and purposes it is owned and published by squareenix. There is another game called Wandering Sword which looks very similar to Octopath but uses a Cultivation story since the developer is chinese (With the choice of turn based or tactical grid combat). Never heard of their team "The Swordman Studio/Xiameng Games" but this is the only game I can find that they worked on and are still technically working on. 2 games that could pass off as an indie game at first glance, but one has a AA budget while the other is from an unknown developer and publisher and is still being fine tuned despite releasing last year.

I agree. It is definitely arbitrarily used
So if EA or Ubisoft created a small team of 5 people and gave them $50,000 to develop a game, and then Ubisoft published it, that’s an indie game?
According to Geoff Keighley yes
I would say no though because that theoretical company would have a huge publisher
Stardew Valley was originally published by Chucklefish, before the Starbound worker controversy. When that happened, ConcernedApe broke ties.
as an indie game user I now learned what indie means
