I'm an European scientist working in one of the top universities in Taiwan. I think the quality and expertise of Taiwanese science is comparable with international top. The main weakness is that the hierarchical work structure is bad for academic innovation. Things could be even much better than they are.
Great analysis. part of the reasons for its town planning chaos was due to several issues. 1. Limited habitable land: as 70% of the country is covered by forest and the government restricts buildings in many of these areas because the country needs trees to prevent landslides during the raining season. 2. Industrial development in the 70's and fast pace for urbanisation. 3. Corruption (but this has been improved hugely.
The police in Taiwan are the best. We accidentally went on the motorway with our 125cc scooter and the police saved us, organized to move the scooter off the motorway and it cost us nothing. Plus they gave us a number to ring it it happened again.

But hey, do you know there's no any motorcycle or scooters are allowed on motorway? The reason our government prohibiting 2-wheels onto motorway is: They thought that is dangerous. So they banned all people to ride on, even though so much accidents are actually nothing to do with motorists, and there are just 5 countries who prohibits motorcycle on motorway in the world. I don't know how you feel, but as a 30-years-Taiwanese, I feel all the traffic constructions are made for cars, pedestrians and vehicles except cars can only get the spaces left from those cars. This also made many car drivers who will never take care with those weaker than car such as motorbikes and pedestrians, some even bulls their way through on zebra crossing or those meaningless "Scooter way". Yes, Taiwan is advanced on many aspects, but traffic.
@@chris780509 I agree on the backward traffic ideas. It gets very confusing when you ride as Google maps are not always correct, so I was worried about motorways for the whole time. Ps the motorway incident happened 20mins after I pick up the bike, so not the greatest starts. But it ended in a amazing interaction, so all good.
Taiwan's law enforcement is trustworthy and works efficiently but they also nice and helpful to people in need. So you really feel safe there and you really can trust them. Not like police in other countries. I am super proud of policemen in my country.
It was said by some foreigners that mobile data plan is insanely cheap in Taiwan. Let me give them an example. The minimum hourly payment in Taiwan is currently NT$150/hour(if one took a hourly job) and I got a completely unlimited 4G data plan for NT$499 last year.
Hi, I saw both videos you made about safety in Taiwan a while back. As a ethnic Chinese who grew up in Taiwan, I enjoyed your videos. They are very informative. I would like to share some information with you regarding safety in Taiwan. What you said about Taiwan's safe environment are all true. However, Taiwan used to be a crime ridden place. Back in the 80s and 90s Taiwan was not a safe place to live in. You probably are not aware of this because you only came to Taiwan 12 years ago. During te 80s there were gang violence, child kidnappings, and sexual assaults all the time. Before the 1980s Taiwan was a simple, honest, safe, and unspoiled society. It was very safe back then. The crime wave started after the first armed bank robbery occurred in 1982. After the robbery crimes of all types started to increase. In 1988 alone there were 76 cases of child kidnapping. Violent crime was so common back then that the police created a list of the top 10 most wanted gunmen during the mid 80s. All of the gunmen on that the list were eventually apprehended. Things started to improve when the last of the gunmen, who happened to be no. 1 on the list, was finally caught in 1990. At first there was slow progress because gang violence still persisted. Child kidnappings and sexual assaults has decreased significantly since the early 90s. There wasn't any major improvement until a case of brutal kidnapping and murder occurred in 1997. This case got significant attention of the general public and the media because the victim was the daughter of a famous Taiwanese TV star. After the victim was murdered people took to the streets to protest against violent crime and the goverment's inability to reduce crime. This finally impelled the gov't to stepup law enforcement. In the following years the crime rate in Taiwan dropped significantly and by the early 2000s Taiwan became a safe place again. I hope you find all the information above useful. I am a citizen of R.O.C aka Taiwan, I disagree. We may look advance in surface, but we actually don't. Other developed countries mostly have balance industry and diverse economic sources, we haven't. Taking USA as an example, each state has at least one main industry in combine with others. Colorado has "major in" military stuff, but they also have agriculture, mental cutting, hotels...etc.

「綜合」實力，我覺得很可能真的是這樣，過去幾年我去過10多個國家，以台灣的人情味、食物好吃程度、物價、悠閒程度、科技水平、交通、人民自由度、社會安全性、犯罪率(治安)、甚至「想抗議政府時的安全性」、居住舒適度、台灣人的互相幫助程度，差不多說了這些，這些「綜合」起來，我相信來過台灣觀光的人都能感受到台灣非常厲害的。

絕多數人認為的缺點就是:政治 法律兩者比例最大，接下來就是對環境或生物等的"保護"層面。
軍事方面已經發展得不錯，外交部分雖然絕多數"先進國家"已經有支持台灣的行為，其實還算是國際孤兒
但台灣卻是多數外國人相當喜愛的地方，特別是墾丁這樣發展的海濱渡假區吸引的外國遊客，以美國人佔多數(種種導向也就有了台灣人覺得美國好，美國人覺得台灣好的相對論，這就帶入了下一段)
執法，相信依然有許多民眾認為警察執法的力道不夠，才會有"看看美國"的言論，但是美國人卻認為警察執法過當(也就是台灣人所希望的樣子)，這也包括種族方面的問題，而台灣人只擔心原住民35%分數加成的"問題"而已
再來，據我所知台灣並沒有美國那樣如此氾濫的槍枝犯罪，美國有，意識下警察會對此問題更敏感
有些人會遇到被吃案的經驗，這應該是在鄉下地區有更高機率會發生或者甚至是你是否為外國籍，但基本上只是"承辦"員警的心態問題而已，通常都是些偷竊等的"小事"
重大案件以及網路犯罪警方動作還是有的，效率也高(有些估計是上頭給的壓力較重)，如要確保不被員警吃案(見上段)，可以透過報案電話而不是直接Call電話手機給特定警所/警員，或是向上頭"施壓"(靠關係或找警政署之類的)
取締方面，鄉下地區(或是因人而異)的警察通常會以口頭警告或攔查車籍，下次才會送你單子，道路或較市區的地方被拍到違規一定會收到，但單純站路邊或巡邏的很常睜一隻眼閉一隻眼
我就遇過應該是去分局完要回分駐所的警車，經過兩台"超載"和乘客未戴安全帽(放學時段接送孩子的)的摩托車都沒怎樣，
而有些人會以繞路的方式來躲避照相
法律方面，警察很快逮到這個殺人犯，但只要他裝瘋賣傻或假惺惺，一樣逃死(某綠色黨相對重視"人權"因此台人揶揄:犯罪者的命比被害者重要)，然後就會有"看看美國"的那些深知美國大小事的鍵盤美國人希望警察可以就地正法犯罪者，以及因為酒駕問題氾濫卻不重判，希望酒駕的自己撞死算了，注意，變電箱也很可憐，安全島也很可憐，請自摔負責!
另外，不管是警是法，你有後台，人家就不敢動你或把你重判，而反對酒駕修法的政客為何多?先讓我立個不自殺聲明吧!
政客有政治背景有黑道背景，小警察敢動嗎?動了就衰一輩子吧!
而且，這次的修法"仍需加重"
校園霸凌方面，相信不少網友都曾被霸凌過，看到校方處理的樣子，就知道為什麼永遠都有霸凌了，再來，不想被霸凌或被霸凌後續搞，先有後台再說吧!沒後台，你就得付出雙倍的努力與心智發展來在社會辛苦生存下去

台灣最美的風景是人，最幹的風景也是人，許多外國朋友可能不明白或是認為自己國家更爛，才會有台灣人覺得自己國家爛，外國很好，外國人卻覺得在台灣很好(外國籍加成)的成見
例如，台灣人覺得台灣的犯罪率高，不乏是黑道 討債 鬥毆 槍擊 搶奪 強盜 偷竊 縱火 情殺 霸凌等，但是外國人卻覺得台灣犯罪率低，我不太清楚，也許對他們來說，這些都是芝麻小事罷了，或者是破案率:員警很常解決他們在台灣所遇到的問題，失竊或遺失是最常有的，破案率又高，待人又親切(這是台灣警察的優點)

我是一位中国人，我终于翻出来了！啊，自由的味道，空气真甜。我们国内现在还在骑马，我们县的知县大人不知道我偷偷的翻墙出来了！第一次接触到电这样的东西。好神奇！好魔幻！我家都用蜡烛的，不要问位我怎么会用手机，而且又手机。这是早些时辰呀，一位有着金色头发，高鼻梁的罗刹人给我的。他还教会了我怎么用这个东西！啊，自由的味道！啊，空气真甜！啊，我们国内还在穿树叶！（对和我一样翻出来的感受自由的同志们说声！同志们辛苦了！工作不好干！加油！）
台灣很顯然是個先進國家，但作為一個先進國家，我真的認為我們的街道景觀 及 城市當中的各種設計可以在好一點，就像在臺北 你還是可以看到很多超級舊及醜的房子，沒有來過的人不會認為他是一個先進國家的城市，他會覺得那是一個貧民窟。

聽到主持人這樣分析，忽然覺得台灣其實也還不錯。如果要說明顯的缺點，個人覺得是恐龍法官、PPT上各種極端仇恨言論(政治、仇女)、攤販不夠乾淨、街道骯髒、夏天熱到頭暈、有一些幼稚腦愛搞霸凌、台灣小人民應該有自知之明卻還是抱著“小朋友”心態的人很多。

Hi, I saw both videos you made about safety in Taiwan a while back. As a ethnic Chinese who grew up in Taiwan, I enjoyed your videos. They are very informative. I would like to share some information with you regarding safety in Taiwan. What you said about Taiwan's safe environment are all true. However, Taiwan used to be a crime ridden place. Back in the 80s and 90s Taiwan was not a safe place to live in. You probably are not aware of this because you only came to Taiwan 12 years ago. During te 80s there were gang violence, child kidnappings, and sexual assaults all the time. Before the 1980s Taiwan was a simple, honest, safe, and unspoiled society. It was very safe back then. The crime wave started after the first armed bank robbery occurred in 1982. After the robbery crimes of all types started to increase. In 1988 alone there were 76 cases of child kidnapping. Violent crime was so common back then that the police created a list of the top 10 most wanted gunmen during the mid 80s. All of the gunmen on that the list were eventually apprehended. Things started to improve when the last of the gunmen, who happened to be no. 1 on the list, was finally caught in 1990. At first there was slow progress because gang violence still persisted. Child kidnappings and sexual assaults has decreased significantly since the early 90s. There wasn't any major improvement until a case of brutal kidnapping and murder occurred in 1997. This case got significant attention of the general public and the media because the victim was the daughter of a famous Taiwanese TV star. After the victim was murdered people took to the streets to protest against violent crime and the goverment's inability to reduce crime. This finally impelled the gov't to stepup law enforcement. In the following years the crime rate in Taiwan dropped significantly and by the early 2000s Taiwan became a safe place again. I hope you find all the information above useful. I am a citizen of R.O.C aka Taiwan, I disagree. We may look advance in surface, but we actually don't. Other developed countries mostly have balance industry and diverse economic sources, we haven't. Taking USA as an example, each state has at least one main industry in combine with others. Colorado has "major in" military stuff, but they also have agriculture, mental cutting, hotels...etc.

@@iamnathank It's good is base on over working hours and low payment, compare with other countries. A Hong Kong professor said his salary in Taiwan could made him become chairman of a institute. Other thing is we lack of promotion, advertising..etc., the essential part of today's market.

Daniel Chen Always take auch rankings with a pinch of salt. Also what means “Taiwan Medical”? what where the KPIs used? Honestly: there are some good points in Taiwan’s healthcare system. However: research, competency of medical staff, operations, are no match to Germany or Switzerland. I have seen scary things in hospitals here in Taiwan...

I'm an American who is in LOVE with all things Taiwan. I got interested in Taiwan because of the legendary singer Teresa Teng (鄧麗君). Is she still spoken about over there? Have you even heard of her at all even though you live in her birth country?
