Allen Iverson had those YOYOs!!! One of the dopest players ever with a unmatched style, a guard that will freeze any defense and keep any defender on ICE!
Armando De Los Santos in the modern league you can “carry” the ball now. Pistol Pete was way better than his competitors at dribbling, but now he would be destroyed by defenders since they are so used to these complex dribbles. When’s the last time a carry was called?
@@armandodelossantos736 not his rookie season, I'm pretty sure there was a rule change around '00 season, and no it was not a carry he was called for palming which is even more bull shit, but he did hold the ball almost parallel to the ground.
Iversons rare speed and body control with that speed and low center of gravity helped him a lot. He moved around the court like he was on ice skates. If he was a less athletic player his handles wouldn't have been as effective.
Dude AI toyed with guys honestly he would just straight embarrass them and so many times he couldve blown past a defender but he would just stop let them try to recover then break their ankles again lmfao that was just the straight street in him you know he grew up in the park balling on fools like that!
Great in-depth look! Apart from all of these.. A.I. also has freakishly wide stance even when standing casually (due to being bow-legged) and also has underrated wingspan, which is almost at the level of his knees.
Im not sure if it's mentioned clearly in this video, but If you defender doesnt really react to your crosses, just do a in-n-out. If you do a lot of crossovers your defender might stop reacting to it and basically falls asleep on you, then you go hard and attack he will either be stunned and stand there or he overreacts and you full it back and shoot.
AI is a better ball handler, and has better overall ball control/security than Kyrie. Kyrie has a tendency to over dribble because of his lack of ability to control the ball outside of his hip. Good ball handlers only need 1-2 combos to engage their defender and then make a read based on how the defender is positioned, and the best ball handlers (guys like Steve Nash, AI, Chris Paul etc.) are able to get by their man with basic first step moves (crossover, blow-by, through the legs etc..) without using any combos whatsoever. They can just read the defender based on how they are positioned. This is because they have great outside of their hip handle which causes defenders to bite on their moves. Ball handlers who don’t have the ability to handle the ball outside of their hip often have to resort to over dribbling in order to get by their man. Kyrie does not have great outside of the hip handle which shows a lack of ball control at the extremes of arm flexion. Kyrie, often has to use 2,3,4 and sometimes 5 combos in order to make a read on the defender before he is able to make a first step move, and even then he struggles. You will be hard pressed to find any clips of Kyrie successfully getting by his man with basic first step moves (like a crossover, in and out, through the legs, etc..) because of his lack of ability to handle/control the ball outside of his hip. Most of Kyrie’s “ankle breakers” are usually just him rejecting the screen on a pick roll, or quick reactions when a defender attempts to reach in/steal the ball. As I stated before, you’ll be hard pressed to find footage of Kyrie beating his man while using basic first step moves, like a crossover or in and out, because he often can’t get the defender to bite due to his lack of outside the hip handle. For that reason alone, he cannot be considered a better ball handler than AI. (And btw literally any point guard in the league can do lots of combos like Kyrie effortlessly. They just don’t because it disrupts the offense. Kyrie gets away with it because his other skills make up for it, and he is often the central player on his team who has offensive sets designed around him.)
Agreed 100% i studied kyrie myself and yu right. He don't really break ankles ,he sorta wait for a defender to reach and make a counter move and dribble to dam much smh.. Worst than James Harden traveling ass.. Iverson straight up broke yur shit
Ultimate Warrior Actually no. Kyrie does not have a lot of ball control outside of his hip which is why he has to resort to using so many combos. Look at the footage of him when he attempts basic crossovers. His arms are quite literally pinned to his side at a 90 degree angle. He struggles to handle the ball outside of his hip. There are numerous clips of Kyrie losing the ball when he attempts to go outside of his hip. Compare that with players like AI or Steve Nash who are able to control the ball effortlessly with a straight arm.
Kyrie has better handle, he never loses control of the ball no matter how slim the space the defenders give him. However, you are on point that iverson, nash, even cp are more deadly and efficient than kyrie. The reason is very simple, footwork. Kyrie doesnt have the quickness to shift weight, which is the main point of crossover. Therefore he tends to overdribble, not to size or read his opponent, but rather to bait his opponent to reach and lose stable ground, which is when and only when he can attack. This overdribble is nowadays glorified as good handle, leading to kids learning from young age to dribble in place, without shifting weight, which is again the main point of crossover. Thus, crossover is dead, basketball is dying, NBA is becoming NBE, just like WWF to WWE. At least pro wrestling admit that they are not serious sport.
Henry Hendrawan Perhaps in slim spaces, but his ability to handle the ball at the extremes is fairly poor. And I have seen Kyrie lose the ball countless times on basic moves. Kyrie actually has extremely good ability to shift weight. The problem is that he doesn’t have good ball control. Especially at the extremities. He can’t handle the ball well outside of his hip or at a straight arm angle, which makes his crossovers and basic first step moves ineffective.
I wanna give some comment to the video. I started playing basketball when I was 19 because i've always played soccer in Spain as a goalkeeper in a high level up until that age really. I started balling for fun and I ended up hooked trying to imrpove every time. Right now i'm working in my crossover and my jumpshot and while studying MANY NBA players i found something wierd that nobody seems to notice and I think is very important. If you look closely, you can see how AI (also Derrick Rose and in many ocassions D Wade) use the Split Step in the majority of their crossovers. These two are known for their explosive first step and this is the main reason. I invite anyone to check players like Russel Westbrook, Ja Morant, Donovan Mitchell, Jamal Murray and many more who don't shift their weight brom the rear leg to the front one during the crossover move. They just step and bounce the other way. It is obvious that it works for them but if anyone is trying to get a hang of the AI cross, give it a try and i think it would help a lot. AI and Rose even used it this way while chaining crosses, and adding that regular split step move to your arsenal will also improve your first step explosiveness. Anyway, I wanted to try and help anyone and while at it the faster and the lower that ball crosses the better.
Short version: AI had a wide stance, dropped his shoulder, and showed the ball out of his body. If the defender didn't react, he drove to the basket every time and converted. He keeps coming at the defender relentlessly, shooting over him and driving around him. The defenders become alert to the movements he shows when driving by them, and then he *crosses the ever living fxck out of them* Basically, you have to be a great shooter and finisher without thr crossover for it to be effective.
He had the greatest left to right crossover thats what made him the goat hes right handed they forced him left every time he attack the top foot every time he had the greatest off hand crossover ever you get that hang crossover it over
you are joking right lol, steph can't dribble past tristan thompson when they were isolated during the finals after switches, and kyrie got troubles getting past bucks bigs last season, no one could stay in front of a.i 1x1. No one.
Xander Sanders well you have to realize that as time goes, ball handlers are allowed to do more and more. Look at bob Cousy for example. You might at first glance think he’s a terrible ball handler compared to modern nba guard but then you find out that back when he played, even 90 degree turning of the wrist when dribble was considered carrying.
You should make a video on how to get better with your non dominant hand. Maybe a workout video. Or you could make a video on reads for finishing like when to use what certain finish.
Iverson himself is very humble and stated than Kyrie and Steph have way better handles than he ever had but I totally disagree. At one point Iverson crossed up or broke off every player in the NBA that attempted to guard him against MJ to Kobe. Kyrie and Step are wizards but they rely on picks to create space or use misdirection to get past their defender. During Iverson's era if you were an elite iso player like Jordan, Kobe, T-Mac, Carter or Iverson the idea of you not being able to kill your opponent in iso and needing help was something they took with disrespect and only called for picks very sparingly. Iverson would size you up without a pick and give you that work and he was able to gain more separation between him and the defender on his stepback and would simply blow by the defender on is iso crossovers. Either way, it goes Iverson not Kyrie or Steph is the most devastating ball handler so far that the NBA has ever seen.
Would love a breakdown of great players who are "unathletic" (by NBA standards). You know, like couldn't jump through the roof. These kinds of players do things that are easier for me to replicate :D I'm thinking; John Stockton, Karl Malone, Larry Bird, these kinds of players. Dude, Karl Malone was built like a tank. Also, these people did things that were even harder to emulate. Basketball IQ is much harder to attain than skills or athleticism. It's either you have it or you don't. Stockton and Bird were like Einsteins playing basketball.
Remember people trying to be Allen Iverson against me on the playgrounds, and once I figured out their moves, it was too easy to steal the ball off them, but they were bit shorter than ai. They key was to always meet how low they were and then read where they and the ball was going to be next. You have to be able to improvise on the fly, otherwise your game becomes predictable.
Ya but they also wasnt no where as quick or athletic as AI either lmfao that fool would break your ankles still to this day AI was anything but predictable too
What about ball protection? All that is highlighted was Iverson's explosive speed and reactions. Some defenders can get lucky and swipe the ball that far away from the attacker's body.
Dime Slinger That’s What made guys like him and Steve Nash so good. They had incredible ball handling even with fully extended arms which made them nearly impossible to guard.
Excellent video ~ thank you! +++ I have a question. How do you get that "going left" move to actually work in the first place? As in, if you cannot actually take someone going left, then eventually they'll figure out going left only becomes a crossover; then they'll stop biting right? Thank you for your time.
A.I. was fast as hell so he didn’t need to do extra dribbling like people do today. He just did just enough moves to score. A.I. could beat you with 3-4 dribbles and just go...
Exactly. The same goes for Steve Nash and Chris Paul. They are extremely efficient off of the dribble which makes their team better by creating opportunities for them to score and opening up passing lanes.
Na that fool didnt plenty of extra dribbling omfao he straight up wanted to embarrass dudes would put them on skates let them try to recover and do it again roflmfao he grew up on the streets playing like that
I just got done watching an entire professional basketball team say Kylie Irving has the best handles of all time... I had to come back, check the film, and make sure that I hadn't lost my mind... A.I. has the best handles of all time, bar none, hands down.
There's theatricality in his ball handling, and if you got lured by it you'll be lost. You'll noticed it takes sometime before someone loses control guarding AI, basically Allen Iverson is like AI, after gathering data in a milliseconds of theatricality a guard is lured and a crossover happens. If you're born in the 90's you'll probably be a Jordan's. you went high school your hero became AI, you went college till now, it was Kobe.
Ball handling? One name: Bob Cousy, though for some people it would be Curly Neal of the Harlem Globetrotters and a for some others Larry Bird. For someone with the quickness of Iverson it would seem to be a hopeless thing to use a taller person for defense. Match his size and quickness or just go big and get ready to either double him or have a second defender behind to take up where the first one lost.
You can't defend it. The crossover wasn't the move, it was the shoulder fake before the cross. He said himself "if they don't go for the fake, I don't do the move." Try it, still works to this day
CIKEDEES It’s the explosiveness and quick first step that they’re scared off which is why they sell out to cut off his drives when he goes left and then he just crosses over
3:04 "more than enough separation" ??? Jordan almost blocked it. I see your point but this clip is a terrible example. A small guard like AI shouldn't even try this type of crossover and shot on a long capable defender like Jordan who can recover and contest. Are you really breaking this down to a science?
Add KD! Redefining the possibilities of taller players. This revolution is being played out - not resolved whether KD represents a new archetype or a one time aberration. MJ was great, but athleticism does not define new skills and conceptions. Curry is the ultimate inventor. The game will never be the same.
Phil Wilson good argument but I was thinking along the lines of players that made kids want to pick up the game of basketball. I threw in Dr. J cuz I know players like MJ were strongly influenced by him. A.I. and Curry gave hope to the smaller kids. KD is a freak, but I can see how he may have changed how taller players thought about the game.

Exactly. The same goes for Steve Nash and Chris Paul. They are extremely efficient off of the dribble which makes their team better by creating opportunities for them to score and opening up passing lanes.
Andrew Thoppil Exactly.
Na that fool didnt plenty of extra dribbling omfao he straight up wanted to embarrass dudes would put them on skates let them try to recover and do it again roflmfao he grew up on the streets playing like that
I better see AI taking Antonio Daniels' soul in this video!
Can you tell us more about his phisique ?
Allen iverson layup next
Plsss break down Curry's handles and his shot
I think I just broke my ankles watching this video.
iverson in a summary is ima make myself vulnerable to lower your guard and gert past you and it makes perfect sense what do you guys think
The Michael Jordan for the average height man
A lot of those crossovers would be carry overs today
ty keyboard warrior
@@zacks6596 they changed the rules because of him. You’re welcome bud. You learned something new today

I just got done watching an entire professional basketball team say Kylie Irving has the best handles of all time... I had to come back, check the film, and make sure that I hadn't lost my mind... A.I. has the best handles of all time, bar none, hands down.
I cant dribble i get ripped and don’t have confidence will this help??
yes thx u r the best do more stuff like this and the difrent work outs !!!!
Can we get a prime drose vid
6:18 Ok who no hate on AI but who the hell also saw all Them steps he just took to layup....
Who cares
Xavier Hawkins That wasn’t a travel. It was a gather because he could’ve easily dribbled again.
AI also had some of the best bounce off the dribble I ever seen
Allen Iverson Beat our ass in 2001 Finals Game 1
I think his body position is perfect and efficient.
The way he beats defenders is like messi in football
Ball handling? One name: Bob Cousy, though for some people it would be Curly Neal of the Harlem Globetrotters and a for some others Larry Bird.
For someone with the quickness of Iverson it would seem to be a hopeless thing to use a taller person for defense. Match his size and quickness or just go big and get ready to either double him or have a second defender behind to take up where the first one lost.
Do a jj Redick video
We need that CP3 Attention to Detail 👀
He already got one its lit bball IQ off the charts
2K20 AI about to be a monster
Crazy how he only does the left to right cross and defenders still couldn't figure it out
You can't defend it. The crossover wasn't the move, it was the shoulder fake before the cross. He said himself "if they don't go for the fake, I don't do the move." Try it, still works to this day
CIKEDEES It’s the explosiveness and quick first step that they’re scared off which is why they sell out to cut off his drives when he goes left and then he just crosses over
@@ghost3dc Have you ever in your life seen AI cross from the right hand towards his left side?
@@oxfordbambooshootify Yes I have, although only a couple times. The footage is here on RUclips, but if you're saying it's rare you would be correct.
3:04 "more than enough separation" ??? Jordan almost blocked it. I see your point but this clip is a terrible example. A small guard like AI shouldn't even try this type of crossover and shot on a long capable defender like Jordan who can recover and contest. Are you really breaking this down to a science?
Almost isnt good enough
Watch elusive football players and you’ll have a better understanding of how he was able to beat defenders
Dc crossover made famous
Allen iverson revolutionized ball handling like Stephen curry revolutionized shooting.
Mount Rushmore of most influential players in history. No particular order.
A.I.
MJ
Dr. J
Curry
Kobe has to be on there
at 614 travel he took 3 steps after the gather

Lol no he didn’t.
Allen Iverson a 757 legend. Va! Tidewater stand the fuck up!

All the drills in the world won’t you help you play like him. He’s just different
