There was consideration to turn the Omaha CLs into AA cruisers but it was decided that using the yard space for repairs and new ships was a better use.
What about using Kentucky as the missile test bed instead of Mississippi? Newport News was an active unit until 1975. Salem was put in reserve in 1959 and Des Moines in 1961.
For the invasion of Japan the Japanese reportedly were going to use their kamikazes against the incoming troop transports. To counter this, the U.S. was going to send in empty transports with lots of extra guns.
Being the Iowa fan that I am of course getting the Illinois was a must. In the game the main 8” battery is not used for AA, so it plays like a super armored Des Moines. And still waiting for the New Jersey as well.
It sounds like if you turn them into dedicated 8" super-heavy AA cruisers, you're basically turning them into barges with the shape of an Iowa given the amount of weight removed.
Had they gone ahead and built the ship like this but left the Iowa-class barrel length would not have essentially made at an 8-inch 100 caliber gun? If so, how would that have affected the performance of the 8-inch shell?
I wonder how much better the ammo storage situation would be with these, with 4 gun turrets it seems like it would end up being like a giant uzi that can fire for 30 seconds
Illinois in game, in my op, is on pair with a Des Moines or Salem because its much harder to citadel and much tankier. I would not be surprised if WG tried a super ship variant with a fourth turret, maybe a reload burst similar to the Annapolis, which is the super ship after Des Moines.
"I'm beginning them to add New Jersey to the game!" THIS is the only way Ryan Szimanski can fulfill his wish of becoming captain of the New Jersey and getting access to the nuclear codes! (When he mumbles "keys" under his breath, he's talking about the release keys for the tubes that shoot Tomahawks tipped with nuclear warheads!) Of course, he will still have to win World War II AND the Korean War before the Virtual US Government awards his admiral bars and makes him Grand Admiral of the US Navy! His nuclear privilege is assured when the promotion goes through... It would be easier to become an admiral after playing a Space Battleship Yamato game, Ryan! For some reason, gaming companies are more in love with Yamato ("We're off to outer space!") than the American battleships! Sure, they introduced a Starship New Jersey in the last season of Star Trek: Picard but it's just NOT the same as "Space Battleship New Jersey."
They did! But with the discontinuation of the AA shell, and no enemy cruisers to shoot at, the auto-loading feature became irrelevant and unnecessarily costly.
@@BearingStraight I've watched Ryan for months since he is the Curator of USS New Jersey. When I first started looking to this presentation, I was fascinated about this.
LOL... I thought the conversion involves removing the 16" turrets, installing 192 Mk41 VLS cells in the armored barbettes and putting SPY-6 radars on the superstructure.
That sounds like a neat idea but in practice it hasn't been very smart most of the time to repurpose ships for roles for which they were never designed. Japan turned a Yamato-class battleship into an aircraft carrier (Shinano) and it was a BIG disaster! It was compromised from the beginning and its aircraft complement (47) didn't begin to match the 80-plus planes later American carriers embarked. Shinano was never finished and sank because of design issues and inadequate damage control training for the crew.
The Shinano had a green crew, there were few naval aircraft left, and the Japanese were grossly outnumbered. Every Japanese ship was doomed. American ships hit by kamakazi took severe damage, British ships manned their brooms. @@AvengerII
I personally liked the idea of totally eliminating the aft 16" turret and replacing the forward 16" turrets with quad 12" "Alaska" style 12" gun turrets and an angled flight deck on the aft apaces running a mix of fighter/bombers and helicopters in an "Assault CCattier" variant
More heavily armored than cruisers, fast and a smaller caliber main battery than battleships? Now where have I heard that before? These things would obviously be Große Kreuzer. 😜
There's something uniquely American about looking at a ship being built and going "You know what? This thing needs more guns."
Damn straight no such thing as too many guns
Enter the Atlantas with all those 5 inch guns
Joshua Humphreys' and the Naval Act of 1794.

Are we sure the infimous officer from enterprise who was obssesed with aa was not involved in this project?
Were there ever plans to take like an Escort carrier or something and just put like tons of 40MMs and 20MMs on the deck.

Exactly - truthfully it’s seems they went the way they did for balancing purposes.
@@BearingStraight Can't have anyone's AA be too good, now can we.
Genuinely the best podcast

What?! Another podcast with Ryan? For how long have I been missing this?
I agree with Ryan the USS Little Rock is a unique experience and well worth a visit.
Navel creed has what your talking with Kentucky but they used Worcester 6" turrets
Had they gone ahead and built the ship like this but left the Iowa-class barrel length would not have essentially made at an 8-inch 100 caliber gun? If so, how would that have affected the performance of the 8-inch shell?
If not a BB, then a Large Cruiser(CB) or Battlecruiser(CC)?
I wonder how much better the ammo storage situation would be with these, with 4 gun turrets it seems like it would end up being like a giant uzi that can fire for 30 seconds
These guns with a battleship sized magazine would be ridiculous
@@BearingStraightthey would have needed to carry spare barrels and the equipment to fit them wherever they were able to stop for a couple of days

would they still have the BB level belt protection .....Illinois might skimp on the belt you think since it was less complete?
We’d expect the armor to be significantly reduced compared to a traditional Iowa. Probably similar to a Des Moines or an Alaska if built.
Why not go for more deck armour like the British plan. Just make a bb bomb proof with like 11inch deck so 2000lb bombs can't hurt it
Kiss plan
Use the 3 barrel 8 inch turret as already works
As an AA ship don’t need 2 turrets up front
Use the space for more AA guns
Was there any thought to converting the Salem into a missile platform

Hello. What is the book on the table? Looks interesting. Thanks.
That is a copy of Battleship Bismarck, by Garzke and Dulin - look for that in a future episode!
@@BearingStraight Thank you. It's actually for my hubby. The only ships I like have pools and casinos! 🤣🤣
Did the autoloaders on the Des Moines not work?
They did! But with the discontinuation of the AA shell, and no enemy cruisers to shoot at, the auto-loading feature became irrelevant and unnecessarily costly.
Color me stupid, but i think there is still a place in the navy for a fast battleship armed with modern weaponry
Hmm an Iowa class "battlecruiser", very interesting. For all intents and purposes a ship similar to Hood.
In many ways, the Iowas as built are already like battlecruisers. Jack and Ryan discussed this idea previously, check out episode 4 for more!

That is more like a modern version of the proposed BBG-1 Guided Missile Battleship conversion.

Was this ever a ww2 design or more modern?
If they are going through all the work to change these ships, could also make it a submarine?
