Attendances and fanbase has to come into it. Villa have the biggest support in the Midlands and that's where their fanbase is from. Villa are a bit like Leicester and Blackburn and Forest. Theres success there, but it wasn't sustained and therefore theres no real national fanbase. The last time they won the league was 43 years ago. And most of Villas leagues were won in the 1800s or early 1900s it's too long ago.

    When were Spurs ever successful?
I’d add that a clubs fanbase does not determine how big they are. Success does.
He’s the type of guy that’s overly aggressive in debates and ends up shouting when someone disagrees and I suspect he’s spent his whole life winning arguments because people simply can’t be bothered to match his excessive energy and he ends up thinking he’s won the debate which in turn builds false confidence and he can’t tell the difference between the two.

The "Cornwall" point is a useless metric when defining what is and isn't a big club. If anything it proves that our fans are real fans as opposed to someone like Man United who's fans are mainly based in London in the UK and then obviously the wider international community - this is probably the main reason why we are consistently ranked amongst the best in the country when it comes to Home and Away atmosphere and support whereas Man UTD amongst others are ranked mid-table to the bottom of that list. I know of, online and elsewhere, of so many Newcastle fans outside of Newcastle, I mean c'mon the USA has a fair few, so does Australia and we are fairly ok in South America and Europe for fans too, granted mainly from Ex-Pats. In no way am I saying Villa isn't a big club, it is but if you were gonna also use the success and trophies argument then we could say we are bigger than Tottenham as we have won more trophies collectively - least to my knowledge - throughout our entire history. That is where that deluded fool is using recency bias to support an argument which should be based on history as a whole. That when paired with the size of our local, countrywide and international fanbases proves we can at least have the conversation and debate rather than acting like a child saying basically "no way" without entertaining a valid argument

“Big club” is nothing to do with trophies. It’s to do with branding. The Newcastle brand from the 90’s still carries over to today and has left them far more known worldwide than Villa. I’ve literally never seen a Villa fan or shirt in my life outside of on the tv but have seen loads of Newcastle. Also did not “win the Champions League”. They won a European Cup 43 years ago that has no resemblance to today’s CL and is more akin to winning the Europa conference or Intertoto cup.

Our players overachieved this season and although in general aren’t team of the season quality, this season they’ve played to a level they have every right to be in and around the seasons best XI. We have a fan base that’s huge, 52,000 sell out every game, away games sell out instantly. I’ve not been able to get any tickets this season no matter how early I get into the website queues and this is the first season I’ve failed to get a ticket to a game. We had Bilbao and Atalanta in friendlies and sold them out easily. We’re not deluded, we are all aware our players aren’t as good as Alison, KDB, VVD etc. but the team of the seasons judged by that campaign and we had players who played better than other big names did.

Much as I hate to say it as a Sunderland fan, Newcastle are a much, much bigger club. Partially due to branding and passion. They have recentish legends of the game like Shearer, Ginola and the entertainers in general. Plus the Sir Bobby years. Realistically the last time Villa had a really successful side was the early 90s with Yorke, McGrath etc. and they were hardly iconic unlike The Entertainers. Also the spread of people from Newcastle to places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other places has probably led to a wider spread worldwide and from my experience a more passionate fan base.

...I mean how popular is Aston Villa in f*****g Cornwall, really 😅 ...idk, for the entirety of the time I've been following English football, Aston Villa has just kind of been...there? Truly one of the clubs in the Premier League (sometimes in the Premier League, at that) , while Newcastle had the Shearer legacy, of course, as well as being recognisable some 10 years ago for their French contingent...so in my personal anecdotal experience, Newcastle is the club that offered a lot more worth following, even before the takeover, and especially now. Does that make them bigger? ...I don't know. But in my opinion they do have more of a footprint in English football 🤷‍♂️

As soon as you start bringing in individual player legacies into it your point is dead and berried. If you're scraping the barrel for that. Clubs are not about players, theyre about trophies, history, success. Newcastle have way less. You also put sometimes in the prem, werent they only out for like 3 seasons. I think you need to educate yourself on international fan numbers, no1 outside newcastle supports newcastle im afraid. 1 team city, no local decent competition, hardly a surprise there's lots of local fans is it. Where is Newcastle's european trophy?

Both times Newcastle went down to the championship it was the 3rd most watched league in Europe. It wasn't like that when it was only villa down there.
Toon have spent more seasons in the epl than villa as well.

I live in Denmark, I have seen obviously ManUre shirts, Liverpool shirts, Chelsea shirts, City shirts being worn, and yes Newcastle shirts being worn. I have never in my 15 years of being here seen a Villa shirt nor a Spuds shirt, I lived in Sweden for a couple of years as well andexactly the same applies. Villa and Spuds have very little international support.

Newcastle are easily bigger than Villa. Fan base is larger domestically and internationally. They’ve generally been a more entertaining team to watch for the last 30 years and have grown their generational fan base based off of an exciting style of play and players such as Keagan, Waddle, Beardsley, Gasgoine, Shearer, Ginola, Asprilla, Ferdinand etc…

Aston Villa and Birmingham are literally the forgotten clubs of the last 2 decades 😂 why is it everyone is scared of the atmosphere of St.James nobody is scared of the atmosphere of Villa Park.. you might have been the bigger club in previous decades but you can’t compete with our fans, our money, and oh yeah we’re in the champions league now too not the Europa league so I think all of those factors conclude we’re a much bigger club in the modern era

I've been to sports bars in many countries (most recently Lisbon) that had Newcastle shirts on the wall, most of which had Shearer on the back. On top of that, I live in Mexico, and I frequently see locals in Newcastle shirts (almost always adults though, rarely kids). There's a sports bar where I live, run by an Aussie (Man U fan), that has a big photo of shearer on the wall wearing the brown ale top doing his trademark celebration I've met people all over the world that wanted to talk about Newcastle, and always mention Shearer. Not always fans of the club, but many are. I even remember a Kiwi guy that had the Newcastle crest tattooed to his calf. I think that period in our history, with Shearer just after the formation of the Premier League, has made a big impression on footy fans all over the world. I can't say any of the same for Villa. And my mother and her family are Villa fans so I have nowt against the club.
I actually have a Spanish mate in Ciudad Real that owns a sports bar and the walls are covered in toon tops, he's a huge Newcastle fan because of Shearer. One of the shirts above the bar was a gift from my stepdad.
