- In this video, we will build an OpenCADE/RetroPie control panel with a Glen's Retro Show Trackball + Spinner + Interface board! The GRS products work great for Arcade1UP machines as well as PCs and RetroPie (running on a Raspberry Pi). I've searched for 3D-printed trackball and spinner panels, came up empty - this may be a first?

lol Thank you Oscar! The models may be downloaded and printed for free. I didn't design it to make money from it and I'm definitely not setup for mass-printing of it. Many libraries have printers you can use, friends/family that have one, etc. I don't recommend using the print services, they'll charge a lot to print it. Hope this helps!
The main problem here is that all the MAME advances the Pi has got, over the last few years, has been in Mame2003+, while Advance Mame 1.4 is old.
Problem is, I haven't found a way to get a trackball working in Mame2003+, despite following all the guides and forum posts.
True, but it's super-easy to copy the roms to the Advance Mame folder that utilize the trackball and spinner as opposed to getting Mame2003+ to work. I spent some time with Mame2003+ and it was a PITA. Just using Advanced MAME for the games that need trackball and spinner was the way to go, at least for me. SOOO much easier and worked just fine.
Nice set up...wish you had a simple set of drawing with dimensions so I can built this in all one piece complete unit.
You could attach the pieces in your splicer, then print. I used the full size of my print bed for this, no room to print more than one at a time.
I purchased a arcade pedestal with raspberry pi 4, the trackball is installed wired ready to go, but doesn’t work , was told needed to be set up with keyboard, I have keyboard don’t know what to do? Please help
Hey... I am adding the GRS Spinner (TS-USP-01/02) and Trackball with the 12 in 1 Interface Board to my pc MAME machine. I want to make sure the dip switches and the jumper (in the trackball) are all configured correctly. On the spinner, it looks as though all 3 jumpers on the board should be ON. On the trackball, do I remove the jumper on the inside to remove the delay? I assume so, but just want to check. Once it's mounted, I don't want to pull it back out. Thanks!

Did u have to configure any user binds or mice settings? Or just select advance Mame? I’m asking bc what about genes for Atari like kaboom where the spinner would be ideal ?
I just selected AdvancedMAME, nothing much to setup really. You can adjust sensitivity and stuff like that, if you want. I was only concerned with MAME, not so much for consoles. Does this only work with advanced mame? I'm trying to use the grs spinner with the 12 in 1 board on retropie using "arcade" and I get absolutely no response from the spinner
Hi Doug, Advanced Mame is the easiest to use. Other emulators require a bit more tweaking, so I stuck with the easy way to prove it all works. You can read more about trackball/spinner support here: retropie.org.uk/docs/Spinners,-Trackballs,-Lightguns,-and-other-Mouse-Devices/

So when you first plugged it in you don't have to "configure controller" for the trackball or spinner? Its automatic for AdvancedMame?
Yes, in Advanced Mame I didn't have to do anything special for the trackball and spinner.
@@WagnersTechTalk thanks. I'm very new to this. I'm assuming you had to go to settings to install that Emulator and then the spinner in Tempest (for example) just appears in Dial Inc or Dial Dec as Left and Right? Or is it j:stick:x+ or j:stick:x-?
I have a weird project in mind and I'm not sure if it can be done. I have the new Atari VCS. By adding just a USB stick drive you can set it to run in PC mode. You can then add windows 10. If you replaced the stick with an external hard drive you could load win 10, emulation, and game Roms. Basically making it a small emulation arcade. What I want to do is build a cabinet to house and display it. Add an LCD monitor. And build a USB controller deck for it. Ideally I'd like a two player deck. Enough buttons to play most games. And it needs a trackball and spinner. But I'm lost on where to go and what to do to build a deck like that. Any ideas/suggestions?
The GRS Super Joystick might be an option for you. You can setup two for two-player gaming. However, it's a rotary joystick (can work as a spinner) and a joystick and includes 6 buttons. It doesn't have a trackball included, but you could build your own custom housing and add one (GRS sells some great trackballs too). Does the spinner have to be plugged into player 1 to be used on retropie. If so how do u toggle between joystick and spinner games
If you launch a game with AdvancedMAME as mentioned here: wagnerstechtalk.com/grs/#Add_a_Trackball_and_Spinner_to_OpenCADE it will pickup both the trackball and spinner automatically. Thanks for all you do. I’ve found a 3d printing service and am about to start this project with a raspberry pi 4. My question is would this panel work with the version 3 of the trackball that lights up and allows for changing sensitivity on the fly? Thanks
Very welcome! I've only tested it with the trackball in this video, I'm not sure if the version 3 will work. If the dimensions are the same, should be good. Also, I've been informed that the encoder I used here is no longer included in the package (I added a pinned comment). It's just something to make you aware of.
How many buttons does a spinner require? looking to build a pinball cabinet where i can play pinball and vertical arcade games...so i will need a joystick on the left and spinner in the middle....was originally gonna only have the joystick with 3 buttons but wonder how many extra i will need for a spinner...is 2 enough?
It's not so much that a spinner requires a specific number of buttons, it's the game(s) you want to play. I'd say 3 buttons for most spinner games is likely more than enough (many, just one). But definitely do your own research on that one to make sure your cabinet covers what you are wanting to play.

Hi guys, this video is fantastic, but could you by any chance sell a USB arcade stick (not too bulky) that has both a TRACKBALL and a SPINNER? to use on my MAC.
But even just SPINNER is fine, for me it would also be fantastic to have an ATARi 2600 PADDLE (my favorite) converted to USB... because I bought it, with a USB adapter cable, but I can't make it work.

Can u add another joystick on the other side of the track ball spinning box?
You definitely can. The unit I'm showing here used an extended control panel (x2 bases) plus the trackball and spinner. I could have also made it a dual stick and put the trackball+spinner in the middle. You can configure it however you want, see the pictures here for more examples of various ways (many more combinations are possible): wagnerstechtalk.com/opencade/#Our_Builds
Like we're gonna assume everybody has a 3D printer which majority do not. The problem with Glenn's trackball is you can't just mount to any panel board. The screw is set in the middle where it makes it difficult to mount on any flat surface.
Maybe you've not seen his upgrade kit for use with Legend's Ultimate amzn.to/2V2wg9i He has great controls, I just so happen to have a 3D Printer and designed this stuff to work with his. You can have the cases printed (link on thingiverse will send it to someone else to print/send to you), your public library (well, not now but normally) or print it yourself. Tons of options. That's the whole point of OpenCADE is to have options that make it configurable. I don't assume it's for everyone, only those who are interested...

All connections here are USB-connected, no reason it shouldn't work but I've not personally used Big Box. It's on my to-do for the future though.

Do Spinner + Interface board support MAME (under Windows 10 64bits with USB3.0)?

Any way the spinner will work in a regular arcade? I have both arkanoid arcade pcbs I’d love to play them but I have no way and I just found the arcade1up spinner if you think it should work please let me know what your thoughts are thanks!!!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm sorry, I only design stuff and allow anyone to download/print it for free. I'm not equipped to manufacture/resell/package/support, etc. Not sure about Brazil, but here in the US there are many libraries that have 3D Printers that allow the public to print items. Perhaps that might be an option for you? Another option would be friends/relatives that may have a 3D printer that wouldn't mind printing for you. I hope some of these options will work for you, I love seeing pictures/videos from people that make their own OpenCADE!
Hey Glen, nice video. I have actually added the spinner to a A1U Asteroids setup. I also have a Galaga A1U that I converted to a Blee 60 In 1. It's fantastic however the Breakout game is unplayable with joystick. I was looking to add your spinner but the board calls for a 6 wire plug. Any plans on doing a spinner that would be compatible with a Blee 60 in 1 setup?

How does MAME know which controller to use for each individual game? When you opened Centipede, it seemed to know that you wanted to use the trackball. Do you have to configure each game individually to make that selection? I'm trying to do a Pi setup with only trackball and spinner games, but I'm not sure how to configure it properly!
If you use AdvanceMAME, then I found there no real setup needed. You can tweak the settings if you want by pressing the TAB key, but it was super-easy. Now, if you want to use lr-mame2003 it can get a bit more complicated. I basically just put all the trackball+spinner aware games in the adavancedMAME subfolder, restart emulation station and tweak to my liking. I assume that is I don't have a 3D printer (not do I want to 3D print) but am making a control panel with wood, then adding the trackball and spinner will still work? My guess is I will need to screw the trackball from the top, which is not ideal but may be required. Ideas on that?
Yeah, you can use wood and everything you see in the video would still apply if you're making your own wooden control panel. The only difference is, with the 3D model you don't have to measure anything - it's all done for you. If it's wood, you'll have to make all the measurements, layout, etc. The electronics aspect and functionality is all the same. Hope this helps!
Ok. I know I've asked you a different question but I have another. Ok, so I built a 4 player game table with 8 buttons each with the control sticks. I play on a home theater projector. It's bigger then trying to get so many people around a small arcade 1up. So I have however changed my original concept. I recently purchased glens diy retro arcade Tron control panel and his Tron stick, trackball and spinner. I am going to build a portable "controller" with it so I can hook it up and unhook it basically like a controller. My question is.. how do I hook everything together and have it function properly when it connected to everything? I did get the connector piece that you have in this video. I just can't picture everything I need to do. It seems like a bit more technical then the standard stick and buttons.

You would basically set everything up shown here, you may want a single USB cable connection going to your Pi/PC. For that, you can use a small unpowered 4 port USB hub mounted inside the control panel. Then, have one USB cable coming out the back/top notch. I'd use a cable tie or electrical tape behind the notch to make sure the cable doesn't pull out of the hub. Hope that answers your question, I may not be visualizing your idea 100% correct.

@@WagnersTechTalk ya the Tron stick I got off of Amazon looks like it only has connections for the atgames arcade. It's really disappointing. Nothing is matching up or makes any sense. If there are two different sticks you would think they would say that in the description before you purchase one.
Question. Is it possible to have 4 joystick's 10 buttons for each player 1 track ball, 1 spinner and 1 Tron flight stick to one raspberry pi 4?? If it is possible how do you do it??? Thank you.
I don't see any reason why not, you'd likely need to get a powered USB Hub to support all the controllers and buttons. Each stick+buttons would go to 1 encoder. Then, connect the trackball+spinner to the interface board which is USB to the Pi. Keep in mind, the most I've done is x2 sticks and 1 trackball+spinner, but see no reason why adding x2 more sticks would be a problem.

This spinner and trackball are designed with the 12-in-1 Interface board you see in the video. Hi, I wonder if you can add a few more arcade buttons (such as start, select/coin, A and B) into the spinner/trackball combo. I know you can plug in another arcade stick into the second USB port. But I would like to have this as one USB controller.
You have the option to print a base with holes for Start/Select (or solid). You can also customize the spinner+trackball panel easily by importing the .stl file into Microsoft 3D Builder (free) and cut any holes needed. Lots of options 👍😎

The only buttons and sticks I used can be found here: wagnerstechtalk.com/opencade/#Parts_youll_need_for_your_build , you'll need to connect the 12-in-1 USB cable and the encoder for the buttons to something (Pi, PC, etc.) You could buy a dual USB cable (x2 female inputs) with one USB (male) output cable and use that. You could also use a small USB hub. Just a few ideas.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by a delay in counting this. If you mean delays in the controls, it's likely due to the image. Are you using a fresh install of RetroPie or a pre-made image?
Wagner's TechTalk that meant to say a delay when doing this. The spinner seams to have a slight delay on Arkanoid and other games. Not sure if settings need to be changed.

I don't recall making any changes for the trackball. I think it was fine as-is.

Totally new to this, Just purchased a Pandora 3D console, it has additional usb ports for game controllers, was wanting to know if its possible to add the spinner control to the console and what the process would be.
I don't own a Pandora 3D so I can't help with what it's capable of. May want to check with the manufacturer for their recommendations.

Anyone have any idea how to get spinner working on a PC NOT arcade 1` up boards. Windows don't see it flipped switches on . Only have 1 wire from running from the Spinner to the 12 in 1and USB connected to the PC. I know there is a another wire but it's useless one side fits in the 12 in 1 but other side is useless none of my USB boards have that type connection. Figured USB would provide the the data between them.

Make sure the rom(set) you are using matches the version of MAME that you're running. If launching the game doesn't work, that means one of the two is not correct.
Any chance the interface board works with the Legends Ultimate cabinet?

Hi there. I've got the trackball and the spinner - threw them in a vertical cabinet. Everything works except I cannot get the spinner to speed up - I've tried to crank the sensitivity and the digital speed all the way. This does improve the spinner speed but no where near what you're showing up there for tempest. Also, as an example I've tested with arknoidu/2 and same thing. I can also use the trackball at the same time as the spinner in Arknoid. The trackball seems pretty decent as long as I crank up the speed and sensitivity but spinner is still really slow. I've got this in an RPI 3B+ using advmame1.4 (even from a command line). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There are also settings for AdvancedMAME recorded on that page. at 10:36 in your video you show the input menu and it shows "dial Analog" is set to none. how is the spinner working with this set to none? My retro pi sees my spinner but none of the emulators do.

Honestly don't recall, it's been awhile since this video was created. However, I will be updating it with some new components in the next month. Glen sent a new set of stuff to try out.

Hi Mike, I've only used this setup with a Raspberry Pi and brief test with a PC. While it may work with what you have (trenz console) over USB, I don't know because I don't own one and infact never used one. You might ask the manufacturer if it's compatible with the GRS Trackball and spinner. If it is, then you could print an OpenCADE box and panel for the spinner and trackball and attach it over USB to your game console. But again, not familiar with their product.

Hi Brandon, that's why the Expansion Pack was added: wagnerstechtalk.com/opencade/#Included_in_the_Expansion_Pack There is a solid Control Panel which just has the screw holes. Using that, you can use any program (like the free 3D Builder from Microsoft) to drill holes wherever you want them. It provides you with an easy option to build it however you want. I'm also happy to host the information/models that anyone comes up with on my site. The good news is everything I can provide is freely available and extendable.
Trackball working fine. Spinner is unresponsive. Windows 10.
I didn't test it in Windows 10, only on RetroPie. For RetroPie, here are the dip switch settings: wagnerstechtalk.com/grs/#Control_Panel_Assembly_Instructions It may/may not be the same for Windows. If this doesn't help, reach out to Glen for assistance (Glen's Retro Show on YT).
@@WagnersTechTalk appreciate the response. I have it plugged into a USB breakout cable right now. I'm going to plug it into its own powered slot when I get home. Fingers crossed! Ready to play some tempest!
@@WagnersTechTalk I got it running! I had to use 3rd party USB device viewer to find it. It was installed and listed as a mouse device but unresponsive. I ended up rolling back the driver and it works fine now. MAME is still giving me some grief but I'll get it figured out.

I don't like it. It shakey and too loosie compared to the cheap Chinese trackball which has more friction and feels more grippy.
Are you talking about the case or the trackball? I've found the trackball to work quite well myself. I believe a new version is coming soon, however. GRS is constantly making improvements.
@@WagnersTechTalk His trackball. It does not feel as solid when you roll it. It feels shakey compared to the cheap chinese $30 trackball where it feels more grippy and solid when you roll it.
