Washington has 3rd highest homeless population in US, federal report shows

  • The United States saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness this year, a dramatic rise driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and a surge of migrants in several parts of the country, federal officials said Friday.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless - a number that misses some people and does not include those staying with friends or family because they do not have a place of their own.
That increase comes on top of a 12% increase in 2023, which HUD blamed on soaring rents and the end of pandemic assistance. The 2023 increase also was driven by people experiencing homelessness for the first time. The numbers overall represent 23 of every 10,000 people in the U.S., with Black people being overrepresented among the homeless population.

KOMO News (ABC 4) provides the latest breaking news, sports, weather, traffic, and local event coverage in the Seattle and Western Washington/Puget Sound area including Bellevue, Redmond, Renton, Kent, Tacoma, Bellingham, Yakima, and surrounding communities
According to the HUD report, Washington state had the third largest homeless population in the country in 2024, with 31,554 people experiencing homelessness.
The report also states Washington had an increase of 4,295 individuals with chronic patterns of homelessness since last year, which is a 55.8% increase. That increase is the largest, by percentage, of any state in the country.
The HUD report shows Washington had 9,383 more individuals, a 360.5% increase, experiencing chronic homelessness since 2007.
Among the most concerning trends was a nearly 40% rise in family homelessness - one of the areas that was most affected by the arrival of migrants in big cities. Family homelessness more than doubled in 13 communities impacted by migrants including Denver, Chicago and New York City, according to HUD, while it rose less than 8% in the remaining 373 communities. Nearly 150,000 children experienced homelessness on a single night in 2024, reflecting a 33% jump from last year.
Disasters also played a part in the rise in the count, especially last year's catastrophic Maui wildfire, the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. More than 5,200 people were staying in emergency shelters in Hawaii on the night of the count.
Robert Marbut Jr., the former executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness from 2019 to 2021, called the nearly 33% increase in homelessness over the past four years “disgraceful” and said the federal government needs to abandon efforts to prioritize permanent housing.
The numbers also come as increasing numbers of communities are taking a hard line against homelessness.
Communities - especially in Western states - have been enforcing bans on camping as public pressure grows to address what some residents say are dangerous and unsanitary living conditions. That follows a 6-3 ruling earlier this year by the Supreme Court that found that outdoor sleeping bans don’t violate the Eighth Amendment. Homeless advocates argued that punishing people who need a place to sleep would criminalize homelessness.

You wouldn't have to with a full time job you could rent a hotel and live by yourself.
Some people know how to survive and some people don't that's why I don't believe you because homeless means you can't afford to pay for a room at all. If your purposely staying homeless just because you can't live at an expensive place that's a dumb move actually if you want to aquire wealth apply at an expensive hotel and have a weekend side gig were you can write your own schedule instead of 19 you will be making 45 an hour between both jobs.

Without the $1,355 rent expense I will have the money to save up for a truck camper. With a plan and strict dedication to that plan nearly anyone can slowly build to the point where they can escape the rent trap and eventually escape the wage slave trap. But civilization is failing and those that don't escape by 2030 may have missed their chance and get sucked into the vortex of humanitarian disaster that will ensue when enough of civilization fails that it all collapses everywhere all at once. Edit:
Not only that, but they also own a lot of land, and that's a very good reason why housing prices are so high.
Besides, the ultra rich make decisions on their own, while in politics it is you who vote for them.
The ultra rich invest in weapon manufacturing and sometimes in gangs and insurgencies. They also invest in economies that may be hostile to your country, so stop pretending that they're innocent or harmless.
It's easy for someone with a lot of money to deal damage. Tracking their money is a very exhausting task which involves a big expense in the first place, so it'd even more difficult to keep them under control.
Not only that, but the more money they hoard, the less money there is for governmental projects. Musk is already an oligarch who's got enough resources to start a civil war if he really wanted to. He's already using his propaganda machine to spread dangerous misinformation.

Folks suffer financially when disasters happen. We can also pray to be more compassionate. I'm not talking about a long history of evictions I'm talking about a circumstance that causes sudden homelessness for instance when a landlord goes to renew a lease and they raise the rent $500 and then that person can't keep up and it causes an eviction. There are lots of reasons for evictions and they shouldn't be a life hindrance where someone constantly has a noose around their neck.

High housing costs relative to income, stagnant wages, and income inequality drive this issue. Job loss, weak social support, medical expenses, evictions, and lack of affordable housing also contribute, while systemic problems and inadequate policies further perpetuate the phenomenon.

Every city and state should do a monthly audit covering tax dollars. It should include a breakdown covering usage and the distribution of funds. This should be recorded publicly and made available to all citizens. Also, any organization, agencies, or groups utilizing the funds should also be included in the monthly audits.

I’ve been living in a shelter in Seattle since September and the problem is no appropriate solution/rehabilitation is available. I’ve yet to meet one person that hasn’t exhibited some sort of mental instability. Jackets and meals are nice & appreciated, but almost all these men need a real doctor, but more importantly: the sense that someone cares. I love the case-workers and social workers, but there just aren’t enough of them; the ones present are overworked and exhausted.

Rent prices are WILDLY out of control. No wonder there are so many homeless here. It all started thirty years ago with a mass migration of folks who sold their houses in California and suddenly found themselves able to buy mansions and apartment buildings in Washington. I well remember when my rent tripled in one year because the building kept selling to new owners. Rent had been relatively sensible at first, but quickly became impossible to afford. Nobody was tripling my wages!

I'm sure the increase in homeless asylum seekers entering the US hasn't had any impact on that 18% right? California has 187,000 homeless and New York has 150,000. Washing comes in at #3 with 31,000 homeless. Is it a coincidence that the two states with the most illegals and refugees also have 5 times as many homeless as Washington state? When TRUMP takes office you will see these percentages decrease as the deportations begin.

I'm in the Southeast region of the country, it's bad here too. No one can afford to buy a home, everyone is packed tightly into stack and packs and also migrant populations now. It's not a mystery why birth rates have plummeted. I hold 2 STEM degrees, make decent coin for the area I live in (well above average) and yet feel priced out or the few options I have are in rough areas where I am better off renting in a nicer area. I'm very concerned that if the value of the US dollar continues to plummet where it affords less and less and housing costs continue to stay high, I'm very concerned something akin to French Revolution 2.0 is going to kick off. Fun fact 1776 happened before the French Revolution. There are a lot of highly educated people on the brink of homelessness or homeless, it's not all junkies and unskilled people. As AI replaces jobs and other jobs have been outsourced, people lose hope, There is this cruel disconnect between those who have assets and plan at that level and those with little to no assets who have to work to provide basic necessities. We are human, we learn skills, maybe it pays out for a little while, but even the most advanced skills end up being outsourced or replaced by machines. It's not bad we can innovate, but it is bad if we can't protect and enhance the quality of life of our fellow countrymen when they are contributing to the community in a positive way. It used to be yo could be an assistant store manager with a few basic accounting skills and know how to stock shelves, run a register, and you could make enough to afford a small apartment and pay for (state or community) college or take a nice vacation, get a car-whatever, you had enough for a roof over your head and food on the table. Today, there are people working at gas stations and living in tents behind them 9serious stories in Florida about this) or 3 families crammed into olde smaller ranch homes designed to hold 1 family. Meanwhile if you do go to school, most people do so and incur a debt for it, but when you get out there is no reward aside from a higher paying job, you don't qualify for any hosing relief even though "free market" housing rates are expensive, making it harder to save to buy anything of your own. 😥

I never saw zombies with such frequency as Seattle and Portland. It is accepted even expected. Seattle authorities are not supported in doing anything, it’s just the way it is here. They like to get drunk drivers but drugged citizens on the streets with no income, that are desperate to get the next high likely not legally, the courts seem not to care in a real sense. Maybe catch but definite release then hand wringing at why that doesn’t get better.

Where did they spend that money? Not on homelessness. I live here I know what I see. And the cost of housing is trying to catch up with CA without the CA wages. $2000 for a studio of any worth. And the landlords can just keep raising and raising. No law against it and no improvement to these properties. A bill was brought to the State congress to cap these rents but it didn’t pass. The democratic Mayor and other leaders in this state have defunded the police, and decriminalized everything, so these homeless can be very dangerous. They don’t get arrested, they don’t go to jail. The police in my community are wonderful and there are resources but these homeless don’t follow thru. Especially the addicted homeless, they would rather be homeless and high than follow any rules to get help. If arrested they are handled with kid gloves then set free. There needs to be some really tough love here. It is out of control and dangerous! This used to be a beautiful place to live. There were no “bad” areas. Not anymore. So if we are third who’s first and second? More democratic cities that do nothing? These liberals here, do a lot of virtual signaling then do nothing!
