Rest in peace Kenny wheeler. Also Anthony braxton was one of the best saxophone players in history. Playing the 3 major horns, alto saxophone. Clarinet and flute plus a couple of extreme horns. The sopranino saxophone and the contrabass clarinet.
We did a show with a duet between Anthony and Roscoe Mitchell back at Michigan State University in 1975, which was superb. I got to see them write the music for the show backstage. Anthony did a quartet gig at MSU later that year, with Spencer Barfield on guitar, and Gary Schunk on piano. A truly amazing musician.
This is fantastic footage, and your recording of it has (mostly!) held up really well - thanks so much for posting it here. At the risk of stating the obvious, this appears to be the complete show; it runs considerably longer than the Montreux segment of Arista AL 5002, making this a really valuable document. I'm going to write it up properly on my Braxton blog over the next day or so (will post the link below when ready) but in the meantime, for anyone who wants the breakdown: 1. Comp. 40N fades in at 0:26 (clipping off the very beginning, unfortunately) 2. The section from around 02:45 is *completely omitted* from the Arista record, which has an edit here to Holland's arco bass passage; the record picks up the thread again at around 09:25 in the video, so we lose more than six and half minutes 3. From here, the video and the record are identical all the way through the remainder of 40N and the whole of Comp. 23J (which begins here at 12:56) 4. The record then has some applause transplanted on, and omits the whole of Altschul's drum solo, so that the section beginning 26:13 and ending at 29:30 is also *missing* from the record 5. Again the video and the record are identical from here, through the transition phase building up to Comp. 40(O) - which begins around 32:38 and finishes at 36:43 6. Once more the record has some applause stitched on at the end, and the whole of the rest of the show - most of which is a high-energy reading of Comp. 23G - is again missing from the record. Fabulous to have the whole show available, which really shows the opening number in particular in a whole new light. Thanks again 🤩
