The obvious answer is to buy both!
If they made available fractional gold buffalo's I would buy more of them
They did but for a short time I've seen a 1/10 2009 buffalo.
I would go for the buffalo, because it’s pure. No need to harden the gold Eagle as they are not used for every day circulation - hard to teach old dogs new tricks! 👍😀
I was under the impression that there actually is 1oz of pure gold in the Eagle, that is why it weighs 34+ grams and not the normal 31.1 grams.
You are correct. 🍻
Very true. The additional weight consists of a silver-copper alloy that adds significant durability to the coin. That makes it a superior coin to the Buffalo to me. 🤷🏻♂️
When Speg says pure gold I believe he's saying that the gold in the Buffaloes is 9999 fine whereas a gold eagle has copper and silver added so it doesn't look as good and is not as pure. He's not saying that they aren't an ounce of gold
There was not an ounce of gold in the pre-33 coins because they were meant for circulation so they needed toughness.& the price was fixed at $20 for the Saint. The krugggerands also are 22k but have an ounce of gold in them
With flowing hair silver dollars and 1795 mint director Rittenhouse & Assayer Albion Cox upped the silver content weight by a bit without telling Congress or the President. You brought your own silver or gold back then and they'd mint it for free. Of course they got sued and the client got several thousand dollars 5 years later.
Spanish vob and in 1733 silver reals along with thallers and brit coins circulated legally until 1853. The US had no gold of. It's own until some was found in Randolf & Cabarus Ctys, N. Carolina in the 1830s. There are private mint coins one of which I'm considering now. Them the US finally built a N. Carolina Mint, which are caving in now around the football stadium.
Then came gold at Sutter's Mill, Mexico. Mexico didn't hear about it until we took Cali as a war prize two weeks earlier. I have a fairly high grade PCGS 1854 (private mint) that says "bent⁸ on it. You çam see teeth marks on it. I guess they really did that as a highly reliable gold test. 🐥🐣🦷🦷
it is 1ozt he's referring to the purity being 91%
The gold eagles contain 1 oz of gold, same as the buffalos. The additional metal is copper and silver, which means the eagles weigh more than the buffalos. That might explain the price difference. The higher durability of the eagles is, IMO, a non issue as nobody is carrying these coins around in their pocket change. Having said all that I personally prefer the buffalos.
An ounce (of gold) in both. Only a smelter could care I guess. For the rest of us;
An ounce is an ounce- so either you pounce.
I wish I could afford either one, got to stick with silver for now.
I don’t think of either. Last gold I bought (which just shipped today) is a Britannia.
I really do not care because I prefer buying fractional gold. Fractional gold is much more practical and more liquid when you sell it.
I'm surprised actually that a lot of people don't know Eagles are alloyed. Why they are this way is really just a throwback to not only pre-33 coins, but also the English Crown. They were alloyed to make them hardier for "circulation." Obviously Gold Eagles are NIFC but they kept the "Crown" formula.
I do like the gold Buffalo's more.
What *I* would really love to see is the Silver Buffalo's come back (as 999 instead of 900)
Everyone and their brother makes a generic Buffalo round and people eat them up.
A real silver buffalo like the 2001's would definitely be a big seller.
Silver buffaloes are 999. I've never heard of a 900 buffalo.
I have piles of gold eagles and glad I bought them
They are both beautiful coins. I think you just go with the best value…which usually correlated with the lowest premium. A steady diet of both seems like a balanced approach.
I have always thought the Buffalo was the sharper looking coin
Why is the Buffalo significantly more expensive than the Maple Leaf?
Some people stack partially for when the SHF, in which case a more durable coin is better for regular currency needs.
Yeah if the Buffalo is cheap right now, I say go for it!
🔥🦈🌊
I usually buy neither, except for a few fractional Eagles.
Maples and Brits are a much prettier coin IMO, and carry $40-$55 less premium for the same amount of gold, so these are my 1 ounce stacking choice.
Gold philharmonics are the prittiest
Just passed on both the AGE and the Buffalo for a .9999 Britannia. 1/2 the premium.
went brittania also because they dont usually stock them here and i wanted one. think im going maple from now on. im close enough to canada that maples and suisse bars are preferred. think i am done with eagles and buffalos unless the price is less
@@38wheat40 same! love it!brittania so nice!
@@jacobmanalang8162 that's unfortunate that they don't stock philharmonics. They usually have the lowest premiums of any bullion coin.
I would definitely go with the Buffalo. Wish they still did fractional.
Me too! 1/4 Buffalo coins would be awesome.
_I prefer the bisons/buffaloes; Gold Buffalo coins have a higher purity at 99.99% (24.1-karat) compared to Gold Eagles, which are 91.67% pure (22-karat). Although both coins contain the same amount of pure gold (1 troy ounce), Gold Buffaloes are often more appealing to investors seeking higher-purity bullion._
_For example, if you're purchasing 10 coins, each containing 1 troy ounce of gold, both Buffaloes and Eagles have an equal gold content of 10 troy ounces. However, Buffaloes are more easily recognizable for their purity worldwide, which can increase liquidity and demand in certain markets. Therefore, while both options provide the same raw gold value, Gold Buffaloes may fetch higher premiums, especially in purity-conscious markets, making them a potentially stronger strategic investment over time._
Pure Gold is not taxed here in Canada so I buy Buffalos instead of paying thirteen percent tax for the Eagle !
I would really like to see the U.S. Mint try a new design, obverse and reverse, for bullion coins instead of resting on the laurels of coins past. The Walking Liberty is the most graceful of all coins, though, imo. Understandable as to why that design was resurrected for the ASE obverse.
I'd say some of it has to do with the facts you can buy smaller eagles. meaning they can have more of 1 coin. the eagles have several sizes. for me I can only afford 1/10 oz per month but I am saving a bit more to be able to buy a Buffalo. I guess it's difficult to say one way or another but I do agree the Buffalo is a beautiful piece. good day gents
I have Am Eagles, a Buffalo and now, I'm stacking both gold and silver Britannias.
Noooo WAYYYY!!! That's just too HARD to believe. What a cluster mess, lol. 😂
Because the Gold Eagle is the superior coin in all manners of fact. Buffalos are for Loosers.
Hope your ok Speg. Good seeing you back.
I like both but one big thing I like about the eagles is the specific sound they make when you ping them. On top of the durability I have been involved in some private sales where for me it’s a lot easier to ask to ping the sellers gold Eagle vs asking the same for the softer Buffalo. In a situation where you don’t have access to a sigma or more advanced testing methods, those who have an ear for the sound of a gold Eagle will know it’s authentic by that specific frequency drawn out ring.
The buffalos make a sound as well and also come with their own benefits but I am speaking from experience of doing private transactions where sigma testers aren’t available and fractional gold is a common theme.
Hey Speg! Why don't you do an analysis of proof eagles versus business grade? Are extra shiny coins worth the extra price?
I prefer the buffalos. I like the yellow look of them over the copper look of the eagles. Where I buy from you are correct the buffalos are currently $6 cheaper. Great Video!!!
I have all the gold 1 OZ except the buffalo, and I really want one but cannot find any up here in Canada.
Did you try APMEX? I've got some PCGS MS-70 Buffs I'd trade you one (not everyone) for an equal PCGS or NGC AGE but I don't know RUclips rules or Canadian Customs. It's just a favor cause I've already got my quota of both and going back to numi auctions,. Stacks & Bowers, Sedwick for shipwreck material, Southebys ect..
Free silver and copper and a more durable coin. Kinda like saying...which is better, a 50 cal or an AR?
I like the new design on the eagles but I won't buy an eagle when I can get a buffalo for the same price or less
Well me i live in greece the most popular gold is the gold sovereign
Have always alternated between Eagles and Buffalos .... going to focus more on the Bisen now that Brian sells it for one point less. Thanks Speg!
I've seen the same thing. I love buffalos, can't afford anything right now which is a shame but it's how it is.
I'm hoping one day to add the reverse proof gold buffalo and the reverse proof gold eagle to my collection.
Considering the premium... why not just stack the maple leaf?
The U. S. Mint has always ripped you off like l have always believed an ounce of silver & gold regardless of what is squished on it end of dilemma…?
Why do they not make fractional buffalos. I know they did a year or two but it makes no sense to not.
Pure Gold means pure dings means not so pure buyback prices!
The premiums are basically the same. Philharmonics or Brits are cheaper and 24k. 😎
I always love watching your channel
If Buffalo came in fractional, I wouldn't even think about AGE's.
I have a couple of older Gold Eagles but since it has been Buffaloes with a couple Maple Leafs and a Britannia. For fractionals I do Britannias and Maple Leafs.
The reason I stopped is what you mentioned; the purity which affects the color. If I buy gold for value holders I want .999 at least. I know the gold content is the same as stated but the 22k gold just has the wrong color. It isn't as pleasing to the eye if you know what I mean. 😉😉😉👍🖖
Today, 19 Sept, 2022 the gold ask price $1,685. Buffaloes, I see some on our favorite dependable site for $1,823. Gold Eagles are 1,862.
It is 2500 April 2024!!
After you have been stacking for a while, it just comes down to personal preference. The mint put out the buffalos to satisfy the purists, but the eagles should be worth a little bit more from the added weight and cost of the silver. I don't think anyone is going to melt their buffalos down for the .9999 at this stage.
both are 1ozt of gold in the end that's why I go with whichever is cheaper at the time of buying. I don't even bother with purity as long as its 1ozt its good enough for me in bullion.
I like the buffalo better for sure!
Glad the first bullion I ever bought was the Gold Buffaloes!!!
Sounds like a good deal right there.
I have many kinds of coins foreign and domestic, im in the US so now im only interested in US mint because i want to pwn whats easiest to cash in to pay a bill. I think the easiest way to cash out is to own what is local
I like both, but have noticed the same....the Buffalo is cheaper and Ill take that!
Buffaloes are currently $15 cheaper than Eagles on SD Bullion.
The eagle does not trigger a reporting form when sold vs the buffalo
Don’t they both have the same gold total? Even if they weigh different/have a different gold percentage at the end of the day it is still 1oz of gold both ways? In that case, sounds like me to go with whichever is cheaper at the time.
Not that I can afford either right now lol
Yes, same amount of gold total
I just bought 2 buffs a couple of days ago.
I had already came to the same conclusion as you have with the Eagles and the Buffaloes.
Both are good. But pure is always better. The eagle is still one ounce of pure gold, just has copper and silver added to it.
If you take care of your precious metals, why would you prefer to purchase the 22kt AGE over 24kt Buffalo? Personally, I think the Buffalo coin design is one of the finest the US Mint has ever produced.
The Buffalo is a gorgeous piece. I don’t usually purchase 1oz gold. I tend to wait for deals locally on fractional gold close to spot. I do however prefer pure gold so if I had to choose between the 2 I would go for the Buffalo. The only non pure gold I really purchase is if I find a very good deal on pre33. I would scoop some 1/10th eagles if close to spot though. I primarily focus on silver, but if I find a screaming deal on gold I will get it.
Only gold coins i buy. Buffalos should come in 1/4 oz tho
Well preference of The Collector
Krugerrand
Maple Leaf
The Eagle is a far better looking coin than the Buffalo, and both have an ounce of gold and the Eagle gives you some free silver.
I prefer the Buff.
Its opinionated.
gold buffalo's for me beautiful coin thumbs up
Buffalo gold all day every day 💰
The point numero uno would be that there’s overall one ounce of gold. The eagle has also the tax advantage here in the US. The melt price would be the same all things being equal but of course this are coins, personally I like them both. Would buy the cheaper
The 2022 gold eagles they stopped producing them to do there models and other stuff so there will be lower mintage for gold eagles this year
was just about to point out the Maple Leaf being .9999 gold, and they also have a security feature. That feature is pretty useless though as no one seems to have the device to check the coins, even places that are listed on the RCM site.
I've personally always preferred the Buffalo to the Eagle by far. 👍
Buffalo Gold 999 pure 1 ounce, I just got a beautiful Britannia Gold 1 ouncer
Your opinion is just that, yours. I will continue to stack Eagles.
Your right Buffalo is 6 dollars cheaper right now on SD Bullion
I can’t afford a full once at one time or it would be the buffaloes.
You're right it's odd that the Buffalo is cheaper.
I only have a 1/10 oz gold Eagle, and I want a 1 oz AGE at some time in the future.
I have no gold Buffalos.
Gold is not on my list for the foreseeable future.
If only modern designer's made coins as beautiful as those from Teddy Roosevelt's time!!! Now those folks designed some gorgeous coins... guess that's why the current group "borrows" them for current coins!
Dude, it's called spoofing, I thought you knew. THE GOLD BUFFALO 'S will continue to be the top gold coin we will see minted by the USA. They should bring back the fractional buffaloes, I'd purchase those in front of eagle too. Great video 👍
Want to buy a Fractional Gold Coin, good Luck trying to buy fractional Buffalos.
The eagles are still a full ounce of gold, you’re just getting more metal with them. Because their primary trade is done in the US. If we were trying to trade eagles in other countries, they’d frown at us and ask for the buffalos as globally the standard has become 9999. Im hoping they change the eagles to 4 nines in time. Until then, calculate how many you have to buy to equal an extra ounce of silver with your gold eagles.
Sitting outside my local coin shop to go get my August gold challenge
Where are Buffalos cheaper then Eagles?
Buffalos dent easy
i will buy 24K pure gold buffalo as compared to AGE 22K...
Another reason ….. 60% of the world market is for 24K gold .
Buffalos went down a percentage point (found it)
The Eagle is definitely gold, but it's not FINE Gold
No fractionally makes me an Eagle buyer
I think tax is added to the Eagles in my country cus it isn't pure. So I would pick Buffalo, and it looks like the colour of my country's pure products so my eyes are more comfortable with them. The Eagles would stick out like a sore thumb with that tinge.
I believe Canada will tax Eagles as they are not .999, but Buffaloes are, so it's treated differently....I think.
Common Speg... one coin contains more precious metal than the other... didn't even mention that! 😂😂😂
Not sure what you mean? The eagle technically has more precious metals in it seeing as how it also has silver.
@@Spegtacular exactly! That's one of the reasons why the gold eagle is better than the buffalo. U didnt mention that in the video is my point.
Well, if you want ONLY gold, which will be easier to get it from?
Pros and cons depending on the application.
I buy the gold Kangaroo, less premium than either the Eagle or Buffalo. Also, the Kangaroo is not subject to the 1099 requirement when selling.
Just me.
What is the 1099 selling requirement? I'm in Perth so not sure if that is an Australian thing.
@@mandoperthstacker that only applies for US citizens. Unfortunately we have to pay taxes until we die.
@@mandoperthstacker It's a US tax reporting statement. Legally speaking, you are supposed to claim any profit that you make in selling your bullion. In lower amounts,, it on the "honor system" of reporting it to the IRS, but once you get to certain amounts (based on what you are selling), the buyer will fill out a form 1099 and send it to the IRS reporting the sale thereby forcing you to address it on your taxes.
@@IMDunn-oy9cd ah gotcha. Well if I could I would allow the US to adopt our rule and definition on precious for tax purposes. Precious meaning that at it is safe from government taxation. Also it would save paper, and unnecessary work hours on the system. 😀
@@mandoperthstacker Agreed. Most people just handle their sales in a manner that doesn't produce a 1099.
The IRS also will say that it is intended to prevent money laundering. But, as with all thing IRS, I remain skeptical.
Cheers
Buy the eagles because it doubles as stacking silver =) That being said, I go for a different coin that's far closer to spot price than either of these US Mint options. Also just also got the new Spanish Mint bullion coin with a really cool new security feature, it has like the britannia's circle with two different images depending on the angle, but the Spanish coin displays 4 distinct images in the gold depending on the angle.
Buffalos
❤❤❤
Good video and info
The only practical reason to buy the buffalo over the eagle is if you want to melt it down into your own alloys for lower karat jewelry. Purity is important for giving you full control over the alloy composition. But let’s face it, nobody is buying buffalos to melt them. That’s what bars and grains are for.
Otherwise, the added durability of the eagle is a significant improvement. The small amount of silver and copper boost the durability by a significant amount. It approximately doubles the hardness relative to work hardened pure gold and is an increase by up to 6x versus unworked annealed gold.
For most people, the odds that you accidentally drop the coin or someday put the coin in your pocket and walk around are greater than the odds you melt a buffalo for use in a gold related manufacturing process. All else equal, get the eagle.
Buffalo...Eagle??? I'm more impressed with that table holding ALL that gold...IKEA...Walmart???
For me, the answer is simple. If my state shuts down, there's a good chance I'll be on the road. Although the Buffalo is .9999, the Eagle is more durable. In troubled times the mixed coins are always the better option.
@@patheticprepper4496 You're ignoring the history of money.
I think the gold buffaloes are ugly and especially the type two Gold Eagles give me the type one older Eagles any day. Big Bird head with a pronounced eyeball. Who the hell at the mint thought that the type 2 looks better than the type one?
The Britannia gold 1 oz is my favorite. Followed by the maple. Then the eagle. The buffalo I don't know why it's just doesn't look good to me
In a way if you think about it. The Eagles may not be a true gold coin. 🧐
