With age, this band has become less edgy and more real. Tragic, hopeless, vile, and clawing. A much more cynical bouquet than I saw in my youth. But it will eat you alive if you start to believe it.

There is a band from Former Yugoslavia called Bjesovi, and their self titled debut album is sludge metal with a sprinkle of rockabilly, i highly recommend checking out that album if anyone is interested
I posted this to an Acid Bath video that will likely be removed, so, might as well say it here too. This regards Acid Bath. I'm a Louisiana native. It's almost unfortunate how relatable "When The Kite String Pops" is. Hot, humid summers - burning and drowning all at once in a dripping mess. The endless droning hum of insect breeding. Wildflowers and barbed wire; roadkill and flies. There are some cities, of a sort, few and far between. Mostly just towns or villages. In between, there's nothing for miles and miles. Trees and nature, so dense as to be unnavigable. The rural areas, you find people who life forgot. Some are just elderly, and watched their world disappear as the children and the jobs moved away. Some lost more than just their innocence to rampant drug abuse. And some just want something good to die for. Meanwhile, corruption poisons the well, from top to bottom. Everyone looks out for themselves and their own here, and will remember any slight you've made against them to drive in the knife at your weakest moment. Families will devour themselves over the most trivial shift in social power or economic mobility. And worst of all is that, in time, you seem to become just like them, for your own survival. I don't know if it's surprising that Louisiana hasn't created more serial killers, or if the deaths just aren't being reported correctly because of who knows who. "Welcome to the snare trap shaped like a state: here's your free gun and dark family secret." So, yeah, I like how Dax and his band really captured the deep-southern wasteland mood.

I got to work with Kirk Windstein a few times during an internship I had at a local recording studio. Dude was always so humble and down to earth with everything. A lot of smaller bands would be full of people with massive egos, but he was always the kind of dude you could just chill and have a beer with while he riffed

I saw the Melvins at an old Jazz venue that had a ceiling designed to push sound forward, and I was on the balcony, they shook everything. I am glad I brought ear plugs.

The distorted sounds are liberating because this world keeps telling me to be pleasant all the time and that music should only be about lolly pops and rainbows but life isnt, just enjoy talent and expression!

By the time I saw Flipper half the band had od'ed but it was good stuff regardless. Saw Fear that same year. I think 'Ha Ha Ha' might be my favorite track.
Would have been nice to see other than the southern scene pioneers mentioned. For example Grief, Dystopia and Toadliquor are early classics that really were kinda different and even darker, harsher & noisier than the more groovy and bluesy southern bands mentioned.

Where I'm from, there was a period of time when it seemed like there was no other metal shows on offer aside sludge and stoner doom. Before that time, I earnestly thought that it was impossible to get tired of smoking weed, but, alas, I was proven wrong. Nowadays I like my metal played on regular speed, or faster.
Every Sludge lover should give a band called Slund a try, a combination of Sludge and Grindcore. Sounds odd but the combination of grimey, tar-pit guitar sound with generally furious tempo and aggressive shouting really does work.
my dad recommended melvins to me after I showed him an alvin and the chipmunks cover of call me slowed down so that the vocals were the only normal-sounding thing about it. I found the simlish off-putting at first but it's growing on me

Sludge is also image and lyric wise very often about depression, hardships and substance abuse often combined with the almost tongue in chin "occult" themes. Like "Satan forces me use drugs". Whereas doom might have more "traditional" heavy metal themes.
I'd be interested in that. During the rise of the scene in Florida I was only an hour drive from Morrisound Studios and bands like Obituary, Death, Cynic, and Atheist. I remember standing right in front of Chuck Schuldiner in a lounge in Longwood during the Spiritual Healing tour right after Carcass opened. I miss those days.

I am very proud to be one of the first to bring this music to the world. I coined the term "Sludge Metal" in 1978. I'm no longer interested in pigeon holing myself into "one" genre of music. That is a condition of smart phone jockeys who must categorize everything. Life isn't in blocks, it flows like water and ever changing. This is why I dislike being in the metal scene. The promoters, record companies, etc. can't get past the obvious and they fail at every turn by doing so. Human talent should dictate, not Sony Records. I feel for studio people and song writers everywhere for putting up with the constant roadblocks that don't have to be there.
Why no Alvin and the Chipmunks on 16 Speed? Sludge Never Dies is an essential record that perfectly encapsulates the sludge scene and the band as a whole before Alvin died.

Sludge is pretty much slow thrash. Although it's more like slowed down fast thrash rather than the actual slower music from thrash bands...

I am very proud to be one of the first to bring this music to the world. I coined the term "Sludge Metal" in 1978. I'm no longer interested in pigeon holing myself into "one" genre of music. That is a condition of smart phone jockeys who must categorize everything. Life isn't in blocks, it flows like water and ever changing. This is why I dislike being in the metal scene. The promoters, record companies, etc. can't get past the obvious and they fail at every turn by doing so. Human talent should dictate, not Sony Records. I feel for studio people and song writers everywhere for putting up with the constant roadblocks that don't have to be there.
