Peter Stradelmeir writes below that Angelina's mom, when asked why she was crying during this performance responded, "that was when I knew I had lost her to the world". In the 7 years that have elapsed since then the world has indeed begun to get a sense of this immensely talented young woman. Her journey has really only just begun. IMO she is destined to be one of the greatest artists the world has ever seen. In her original song "Shield", which she wrote at age 11 or 12, you get a real sense that she knows what a profound impact her voice, her talent and her career will have on her and on her family. She refers to her family as her shield, protecting her from strangers and others who will seek to exploit her as she attempts to fulfill her dream. She also writes "forgive me for all that I am". An incredibly complex and intimate phrase that most adults, let alone a child of 11 or 12, would be focusing on. It is an example of what makes this young woman so special. Her character, her humanity and her humbleness, combined with a once in a lifetime artistic talent, are a gift to each of us that have been and will continue to be blessed to watch and share her journey.

I live in Denmark just south of Norway - The day after this audition, the hostess in the Danish TV-news
said, that something extraordinary had happened in Norway, and then they showed Angelina´s whole audition.
One more thing - Angelina has later told, that the moment she walk onto this scene, she felt at home, that it was here she belonged.

As the lady said when she sent Angelina out on stage, "go and give them jazz". And did she ever... and has never stopped. She does so many styles and genres, but you can always hear the jazz roots. Here is a quote from Angelina when asked about this song in an interview done before this show aired....
"The reason I chose this song is completely random. I love jazz, but "Gloomy Sunday" was random. It was a night I could not sleep and my mother was stressed that I was awake long after midnight. Then I borrowed my mom's iPad where I wanted to listen to jazz on RUclips before I fell asleep. Then came a picture of a beautiful lady screaming at the sky and with her eyes closed... I'm talking about jazz queen Billie Holiday. I heard the song "Gloomy Sunday" that night and then I had to hear it every day. I love the melody. I understood well what the text was about because I know English well. Every time I sang it I felt something special about it, it's hard to explain in words. When I sang it for mom, she said that this song is nice, but that it was incredibly sad song". - Angelina Jordan

@@wippletits I agree Kent. I'm always amazed at how someone can superimpose something like that on a situation (very easy to do on YT), and how easy it is to buy into---with no verification. Like the John Legend backing track rumor with AJ's performance of "All of Me", which I willingly bought into and continued to spread. When something like that takes off, it quickly gains wings and can be seen by millions as "truth"; especially if they want it to be true. I appreciate your healthy skepticism, which helps keep us all tied to reality. 👍😊

That was a wonderful reaction, Valerie. This performance went viral over night on YT (over 5M views), and has over 25M views now. As one judge said, I think we have a star here. And the others felt the same. But for me, it's her next performance in the "judges cuts" that cemented that perception for the judges. All the singers are gathered on the stage (no audience) to perform for the judges. The judges give no feedback at this time, but they will decide from this who moves on to the semi-finals. Each contestant steps forward and does their thing, then returns to the line (looks like about 20/25 singers). Angelina then steps forward in her traditional white dress, barefooted, snaggletoothed, mounds of hair, and sings another Billie Holiday song, "I'm a Fool to Want You" ruclips.net/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/видео.html totally a cappella. And she just kills it. Then she smiles, does a half curtsie, says thanx, and returns to the line. Notice the young girl in red behind her place her hands over her face in amazement when Angelina returns to the line. Most of the singers probably suspected that they were now performing for second place. Angelina went on to win the show by a landslide, receiving almost half of all the votes. Her next two performances are equally amazing.
"Bang, Bang" ruclips.net/video/3D0e0miMSI0/видео.html In the semis she covering the Nancy Sinatra version of this song written by Sonny Bono (1966) for his then wife Cher.
"Summertime" ruclips.net/video/nsBfBuc9d9I/видео.html In the finals she performs this classic Gershwin song from the American Opera "Porgy and Bess".
Thanks for your exceptional insight into this young, prodigious, phenom. I always learn something new from your analyses. Looking forward to your next reaction to Angelina. 😊💕

Even though I have seen this MANY times, I am still amazed that she had no idea how good she was. None at all. I have come to learn that Angelina doesn't think in terms of ranges of good or not good. For her, it is either right or it isn't. She has an truly astonishing ability to know precisely how a piece should sound, and she invariably makes it so. All the improvement we see with Angelina over the years is her experimenting with and developing her instrument, so she can get her performances right, in whatever genre she attempts.

First Valerie let me say thank you for your wonderful reaction to Angelina. I truly look forward to your comments and opinions. I am enamored with Angelina. Actually I love her. I adore her. I have been a huge fan for over 3 years. I knew almost from the very first note I heard her sing that I was incurably addicted. Until her AGT performances it really felt like Angelina was this astonishing little secret miracle shared by a select few whose souls were deeply touched. Now, the world knows of her and I admit to the tiniest jealousy at the thought of sharing her but still I am deeply happy for her. She is far, far more than just a gifted songstress of seemingly unlimited talent. She is the epitome of character, grace, beauty, compassion, humility, charity and joy. Not a single day passes without my listening to several of her songs. When she sings nothing else exists for me. Her voice and countenance envelop me in serenity, tranquility and awe. My soul is at peace and I know God Himself smiles with delight at this wonder with which He has graced our lives. There is something elusive and beguiling about Angelina that leads me to believe I will never fully comprehend what she has done for me but I'm going to spend my twilight years trying. I pray God bless and keep her all the days of her life.

her family did encourage it, angelina fell in love with jazz at the age of 1, and she sang a song on camera emulating a jazz star. thats what she wanted to be. she wants to be like billie holliday, like all the people she looks up to. she was very young when she started playing, singing, playing piano, and guitar i think from the videos people have found of her learning to sing. its really interesting. i really wish more families let their kids sing. i only learned recently that my mom liked to sing in high school and people loved her voice. she hid it mostly from us for 50 years. i sing alot more now, especially after hearing about that.

I'm glad to see you reacting to her again. I love your reactions. I don't see she interprets songs form a child's point of view. Somehow she can inhabit the emotional world of a song, even when she doesn't have that emotional maturity herself. She can have us all feeling sad at the end of a poignant Adele song, for instance, and then burst into a cheery goodbye. It's kind of jarring sometimes. You make like to know she just signed with Republic at 14. Don't know if you would like it (I know your predilection is for jazz), but I like her covers of Rhianna's Stay or of Lana del Rey's Young and Beautiful.

Great review and commentary as usual, Valerie :)
Everything you said is on point. Specially how children soak up what their parents expose them to culturally. And if the child happens to be as gifted as Angelina, listening to jazz from a very young age sort of paved her way. I have to point out her extraordinary ear for music which you can observe not only in her tone, melismas, musicality but particularly in her timing. She takes the time to come in the right moment in sync with the music, or elongates certain words for emphasis.
Also, regarding her family and particularly her grandmother encouraging her career, the great thing about it is that they didn't "push" her to be someone she was not already. They only gave her the freedom and the means to be what she wanted to be.
When the world learnt about Angelina, they proceeded to protect her from excessive and early exposure, while still allowing her to slowly develop her craft and her career.
One last thing, Angelina has not only been blessed with a unique voice but also with a big heart, kindness, humility and generosity.

Angelina said she started exploring jazz music via an iPad and RUclips. She searched for jazz songs and decided to sing the ones she loved. Initially I guess she got exposed to jazz at home via jazz records being played.
Her mother said Angelina picks her own songs. Even when she was very little. So she has found her way to most of the covers all by herself.

There’s so many places you can go with Angelina, but it seems you have not watched her other NGT performances. Whether you review them for us to watch-and I hope you do-you should listen to her other audition song, I’m a Fool to Want You (a cappella). And then her two actual full-on performances of Bang, Bang and Summertime. Just for your sheer enjoyment and amazement, you have to see them. On her first two Billie Holliday pieces, she’s basically channeling Holliday. On Bang, Bang and Summertime, you’re watching Angelina giving her own interpretation to the songs.
Summertime is stunning. Bang, Bang is, no question, the best version I’ve ever heard-and I’ve loved this song since the 60’s when I heard Cher’s classic version and Nancy Sinatra’s even better take on it. Angelina conveys the adult, melancholic theme better. It’s chilling to hear and watch Angelina deliver this. You understand right away that this 7 year old realizes that the power of her performance will not come from showing off her vocal range, but by an understated, quiet performance that has the audience transfixed at the first notes. She’s still mesmerizing me today.

My parents were music freaks. They loved big band music. They brought me to many of those concerts like Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Mel Torme, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, Blood Sweat and Tears, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Return to Forever etc...it just seamed to rub off onto me. I got really involved with music at 4th grade. I was hard core finishing music education in college and performing in various professional bands and some studio work. I was no where near as talented as this young lady. She will be a well known performer for a long time.

Hopefully, with the new recording contract, they will press some vinyl LP's. Imagining hearing that old style jazz on vinyl. It probably won't get much play from the tween to 30 demographics, but my generation will love to dust off our phonographs and amplifiers to appreciate true classics. I hope that her recording label allows her to stay true to her style. I'm sure they will push her toward the money making genres, but I hope they allow her to continue with the classic genres also, as well as originals. I am very close to someone (my son-in-law) who's music company is affiliated in some way with Republic Records. I'll give him my suggestions for her hahaha.. I wish.

She was young and learning when she developed her singing. If you wonder why she holds your heart in her expressive hands when she sings....anything, it is because Lady Day is in her vocal chords. Billie sang through pain. Angelina sings from her soul, from her depth as an early learner listening to a genius jazz singer. She is so gifted.... When I listen, I bring my tears, and my heart....

If you watch Angelina Jordan - I Who Have Nothing ruclips.net/video/RjQZKBpVaes/видео.html recorded by her grandmother at her school's recording studio when she was six years old, you will see why she had the confidence at age seven to audition for Norway's Got Talent. The discussion with the engineer at the end translates to:
    Angelina: Was it good?
Technician: It was great Angelina. For a first time.
    Angelina: Laughs
Technician: No it was completely beautiful, actually.
    Angelina: Laughs
Technician: There was a some mess-up in the middle part.
    Angelina: Yes
Technician: You shuffled some of the words around.
    Angelina: Laughs.
Technician: How did you feel it worked yourself?
Angelina: Wheeeel, it was ok... Only one sentence was...
    Technician: Yes, there were some
    (cuts off)
    I appreciate your Angelina reactions.

You pointed out how she sounded like a young child here (because "she was 7, for cryin' out loud"). The amazing thing is, over the course of just a few months (5 or 6?), she lost a lot of that childlike quality in her voice. Or, well, I guess I should say she learned how to compensate for it, because she didn't _completely_ lose her so-called "rasp" (or what I like to call her "childlike hoarseness") until she was 10 or 11. In the second round of this competition, singing "I'm a Fool to Want You" a cappella, she sounded very much like she did here, but in the semifinals, where she sang Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", the limited range of the song, pitched much lower than "Gloomy Sunday", fit her voice perfectly, and she was able to deliver a more powerful, more mature sounding vocal. Then in the finals, she took out all the stops and sang "Summertime" in a style reminiscent of Dinah Washington, "only more so" [grin] (although the musical arrangement is that of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's 1958 version).
I really hope you choose to react to the other 3 NGT performances. If you want to stick with longer versions and English subtitles, you can use these videos:
    * "I'm a Fool to Want You" ruclips.net/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/видео.html (no judges' comments in this round, and the only pre-song stuff is just her saying what she's going to sing, so subtitles/captions are not necessary - please note that this particular video is the only stand-alone upload of this performance [i.e., not part of a compilation] that includes the _full_ song: all other videos of it present an edited version [apparently the way it was originally broadcast on TV] that omits the entire bridge section of the song)
    * "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" ruclips.net/video/pcBoB49Gxn8/видео.html (includes post-song judges' comments, with English captions ["CC"] available; unfortunately, the video is in the wrong aspect ratio [16-by-9 video squashed into 4-by-3], so this other version ruclips.net/video/HCaDyiqs7Wg/видео.html is better for watching her sing the song - you can switch to the captioned video for the post-song stuff)
    * "Summertime" ruclips.net/video/bnpFsCNKzFg/видео.html (includes pre-song mini-interview and post-song judges' comments, with English captions available)
There's also a video containing the announcement of the final results: ruclips.net/video/zN4kAof1is0/видео.htmlm9s (English captions available, but I don't think they're quite as good as in the other video I linked to, so I don't suggest using this one for the "Summertime" pre- and post-song stuff)
And finally, there's this short interview with Angelina's mother as the post-win celebrations are still going on around her: ruclips.net/video/OP1ZUeCrbMI/видео.html
If you don't care about all the pre- and post-song stuff, you can just use videos 3, 4, and 5 of Rusty's chronological playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL2v8kgVeo4EbYDVnRwObjETfWpXbzbgIO

This was the episode to enter the contest, the rest of her performances hereinafter:
    1. "Gloomy Sunday" you just reacted to
    2. "I'm a Fool To Want You" a cappella judges not allowed to comment (no subtitles)
Here you have the complete sequence (unfortunately no subtitles) ruclips.net/video/y3oYloFYRzI/видео.html but with google audio translator I got the following main words and look at the end those going forward, including Angelina: "Thank you it was nice; we'll have a little conversation between us it is better to go out and then we will call you back in just a short time; very well done... Welcome back It was nicely done and you can sing at a very high level and very much different kind was taken and thus also a very difficult task for us 4 and we have made a choice and I will ask the following to take a step forward: Natalie, Ulrik, Vegard, Adele and Tommy he is unfortunately no longer in the competition. Thank you very much for participating and for the great effort. Thank you for coming you can go out (meaning they stop there); then it comes to remaining here, it's like that everyone goes ahead in the competition! "
    3. "Bang-Bang" in the semi-final ruclips.net/video/7LVHl_juO-Q/видео.html
    4. "Summertime" In the final (subtitles avail.) Full final show ruclips.net/video/zN4kAof1is0/видео.html

She's nervous at the beginning. Notice how she stumbles over her name. Notice also that last question about the meaning of the song. It sounds like Angelina doesn't know what the song is really about (it's about a man wanting to kill himself to be with his dead lover - kind of dark). But she still captures the feel of it, by instinct.

Hi as a fan of your reactions especially to Angelina Jordan, I’d love you to have a listen to this little girl. I have been listening to her for a few years on RUclips. I know she is from Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, but rich in culture. I don’t speak her language but it obvious she has musical parents who are singers and have their own orchestra it seems. The little girl is 10 now it would seem and sings in a few languages and English. The link below shows her ability. It’s not English, but her stage presence and confidence at 10 is amazing. She’s been doing this since about 7 as far as I can see in front of hundreds on stage. She seems to be one to watch. Amelia Uzun. ruclips.net/video/uUKQIVjRuno/видео.html

She was three and she took two and I dumped her water. Billie Holiday means the world to her that Louis Armstrong Frank Sinatra, even Whitney Houston she studies people from 33 years of age her grandmother in addition to jazz and she took it to duck duck to the water. She loves this music and she still loves it all.
