  • Canon City, Colorado has a western feel to it. The main attraction are the Royal Gorge Train and Bridge/Park. It is well worth the trip and we had a blast! plus less than an hour outside of Canon City, there's the famous Bishop's Castle!

I didn't do the train, but the rest of the area made up for that. Walk the high suspension bridge, cross by cable-car, and look down at the train so far away that it looks tiny, and check out the gift store. The family stopped there in passing when I was a child, and I got to be there again when I was 35. It was a remote location when it was built and everything was hauled up there by mule wagons. I actually met Mr. Bishop when I was out there, something of a strange person but he was building his dream while he spoke with a small group of tourists. He explained that God had visited him in a dream and told him to build it. He was a self-taught stone mason and that he designed it as he went along. I was in the nearby area for a couple days and saw Mr. Bishop several times driving around in his old pickup hauling more stones to use for his castle, always working hard, and always happy to speak with visitors as he worked. It's a monument and testament to what we can do if we work hard toward our dreams. I was also lucky enough to be in the area when the Aspens turned color for the fall, gold and yellow and orange as intense as a fire, one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Glad y'all liked it!
