    I had an early TR4A in the early seventies in Statesboro Georgia. Zero rust, completely original. It certainly needs an overdrive.

    Just an FYI, this car did originally have the rectangular motor mounts. I did replace them once before and it took some digging to locate the rectangular mounts. Most vendors had the round ones. Eventually, I did find a pair of rectangular mounts. Don't know why they fell apart when you took them out. They probably only had 50 000 miles and 45 years on them 🙂

    That's whole lotta work, but in the end I think the car is better than it otherwise would have been. I didn't realize the transmissions across several models and years were so interchangeable. I had a fully syncro trans in my TR4 but no overdrive. I put a lot of miles on it with no "transmission" issues at all. My problem was the dang rear main seal leaks which lead to oil on the clutch disk. I wish the redesigned rear seal had been available (or wish I knew about it) back when I owned it. The main reason I got rid of my TR4 was I just didn't have the $$ to keep fixing that leak and replacing clutches. Otherwise it was a great, fun little car. I'm looking forward to seeing yours in PA next weekend - assuming you and Elin deem it ready for the long road trip.

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the transmissions in these cars are pretty stout and seem to last a long time. Yes, the new style rear main seal is great…when we do a rebuild, we will definitely upgrade to it. Cheers, Tush

    Definitely one of the best vids you guys have put together. I'm a First yr owner of 75 'Six. Cancelled netflix because I spend most of my spare time watching the Tush and Elin brothers. Probably looking at a transmission rebuild as soon as I have the cash. Goes thru the gears perfectly, but My local shop (45 miles away) recommends I treat it gently, since it sounds like shaft bearings.... In this video toward the end, Elin's pulling out the lift from the rear, so of course there's going to be a question on rear lift point.. Ten yrs of Forum comments on rear lift point only muddies the water. Would be nice to see what I bought. Thanks

      @cheftush  10 месяцев назад

      If you are talking about the jacking point at the rear of the car, I agree there is lots of debate. Cheers, Tush

    Sorry to hear you had problems with the gearbox, BUT it is probably a blessing in disguise that you end up with a full synchro box that's been inspected and freshened up installed. You guys are so lucky to have all (or most of) the right spares on hand. I don't know if it is still true, but recall in years passed it was difficult and expensive to find the shorter main shaft!
    Here's hoping any remaining bugs are minor and easily fixed!

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush  10 месяцев назад +1

      The shorter Main shaft is about $350 US last time I checked. I think the availability is still fairly good on them. Yes, the all synchro transmission is definitely nicer!

  • @pda49184
    @pda49184 10 месяцев назад +2

    That was unfortunate to find an issue with the gearbox, but if anyone had enough spare parts and ability to fix it , it would be you & Elin. Fingers crossed that you've now got it all tickity boo and ship shape.

    Well, I drove the car today for the first time in several years - and it was a blast. Looking forward to seeing it again tomorrow on the show field at BCD. I am very impressed with how tight everything feels. I do think the accelerator pedal seems a little too close to the floor and I wonder if the throttle is able to reach fully open when depressing it. Looking forward to the interest in the car tomorrow on the show field.

      That’s awesome Keith. It is reaching WOT as we checked against the pedal stop. We didn’t change anything on the pedal height, shaft spring, linkage etc. See You tomorrow.

    Lots of good technical info in this video! You guys are definitely persistent and stay on task! Maybe now Elin can justify a Bridgeport milling machine so he can easily make the required modifications to the overdrive adapter plates! 🙂 Have really enjoyed this series, because this is similar to what I plan to do with my TR3A.

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush  10 месяцев назад

      Yes, a small milling machine would have been perfect. But, we managed with a drill and die grinder although it took awhile !

    ....I rebuilt my non-overdrive TR3a transmission several years ago (more of a maintenance inspection and some parts replacement)...When it first went back on the road it would not shift down into second gear...I said after all the work I will live with it until I feel the energy to pull it apart....So, at about the 25 mile mark I'm driving with a friend and explaining the issue and, without warning it lets me downshift into second gear....I'm ecstatic 'cause it just started shifting as it always did, only slightly smoother (new synchros), and I felt that was the problem...There were probably burrs on the second-to-third gear synchro rings I hadn't checked ..... I tune my 3A on my very old King Dial-a-tronic engine analyzer , I bet you've never seen one, lol , sure gets the looks from folks walking by my driveway..................John (west coast,Can.)

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush  10 месяцев назад +1

      If the car had a first gear synchro, we could have probably been able to drive it a little while longer…but, missing the first two gears was a bit much 😉

      @@cheftush I was taught to drive on several sportscars, started with an MGTD and worked my way up to an MGA twin cam and Porsche 356....I was told that, " Any fool can learn the rules of the road,...I'll teach you how to handle a car" ...He was a neighbour and 'Big Brother' who mentored me from the time I was 15 or so....I've never had a car with synchro into first gear, which includes some high performance Fords (406 and 427) with 3 speed overdrives...so double clutching is just natural to me, even with a column shift.....My 'Big Brother' is still a close friend and lives in Gibson's, B.C. and our lives have become a series of coincidences having both become pilots and aircraft owners and deeply into photography (I'm an ex TV cinematographer) without any connection for a long period of time....Funny how life works, eh.... I do miss the old Westwood Circuit that was so popular here in the '50's and 60's ......( I did pick up through your video that the top cover is different between a TR3 and TR4 trans, ..Good to know as I have a spare TR4 trans with a chip out of the cover at the shifter, I guess I may get it welded back in....lol )....Sorry to run on, memories do that to me now...

      With it initially shifting through the gears with the car not running, we thought it was more internal.

    I love Elin and your content. Very informative and entertaining. However your constant use of errr, errrm and aargh in every sentence is very irritating. I think you are trying to be too informative. It would help if you had some sort of brief scrip before you speak and highlight salient points. Otherwise keep them coming.

    • @cheftush
      @cheftush  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback Paul. These videos are already difficult to make and upload…having to create a script would put it over the top so, that won’t happen. I’ll try and be more mindful when speaking.
