For me back then it was the sound that blew me away more than anything else. I will never forget when I played Actraiser for the first time. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The first of many epic soundtracks to come. I still listen to so many soundtracks from the SNES. I just love that era for its RPG music.

    • @what9681
      @what9681 8 лет назад +1

Actraiser still has one of the best soundtracks after all these years, it sounds like John Williams and his orchestra did the music lol, and many of the songs are so catchy too. I would beat the game over and over again just to hear the end credits theme, it's unbelievably good. Of course since then there's been mp3's on the internet and youtube lol

SNES is my favorite system of all time. I was only 3 years old when it came out so I didn't participate in the launch, but I grew up playing it at my neighbor's house in the early to mid 90s. There is something so timeless about the SNES that no other system has been able to match. Mine is proudly hooked up to my 60 inch TV, and I play it every week.

Are you me? I was also 3 years old when it came out and it's also my favorite system, half an hour ago I was just playing Illusion of Gaia on my 32 inch TV and then I come here and find this video :'), it's just a timeless perfect console.

Wonderful memory there Johnny - cherish it. Cute detail: my parents bought me the exact same box (SNES + Super Mario World) in Belgium, and they totally caught me off guard with it. I remember coming home one evening after finishing home work at my grandparent's place, with this box standing on the coffee table. I could not believe my eyes. I vividly remember watching my dad play A Link to the Past a few months later. That's why this is my favourite console, my favourite Zelda, etc... So many great memories.

The SNES is easily my favorite console ever, to this day. Sure, the NES, PS1 and PS2 are all equally worthy of that title imo, but the SNES just goes above and beyond for me personally. Part of it's nostalgia, sure, considering I got this thing when I was like 6 or so and it was THE cornerstone of video gaming in my life until my teens (and still at least somewhat even out of that as I tried to play most of its catalogue even into the 2000s and eventually emulated various awesome Japanese-only translated games for it), but.... man, it's just so seeping with quality. The controllers were the best and most comfortable at the time and are STILL great (the wii classic controllers reflect that), the graphics and sound capabilities were more than awesome for the early 90s and still hit a special chord to this day as the pinnacle of 2d gaming before things started the big shift to ugly early-days polygons... soooooo many memorable experiences, colorful worlds and characters, unforgettable soundtracks, and SO many of the BEST GAMES OF ALL TIME specifically, like Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, FF4-6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Mega Man X, etc etc.....
Just... *damn*, what a system. It's hard to imagine anything will ever measure up unless Nintendo got as much copious 3rd party support again and made a simple, straightforward gaming machine without so many crazy gimmicks, or if some other company came about that was able to have the charm and understanding of what made video games as a medium as awesome as nintendo did in that era and had such support.

Jesus Christ I feel old Johnny...Why can't games now give me that magic feeling from this time? I think we've got spoiled with the internet and we gamers aren't socially connected in person to be passionate about them as we were. Me and my brother would play for days on new games we would rent and it was amazing to take home a new game every weekend.

I still play my Super Nintendo a few times a month. So many games for that system and during that era in general have aged so well. Super Castlevania IV still has some of the best music on the Super. Turtles in Time was a superb Arcade port and so many great platformers and RPG's. Johnny, how many SNES games would you say you have?

I still remember my first day with the SNES: me and family travel to Puerto Rico like aveey months for Dad business and Super Market Grocerys and monthly I bough Nes games but when I went inside Toys R' Us I die when I saw Super Mario World. dad bought it for me and I still remember that at that price was $259.99 Dollars! and F-Zero for $50 Dollaras. We use to travel for only one day and I didnt go out of the Hotel even to Dinner! ...that was so amazing memory from September 1991! I was one of the first in my country (Dominican Republic) to got the system.

Awesome tribute Johnny! Fantastic system! So many great memories with this system and my friends! I got one for my 8th birthday in 1997. Since it was used, my mom boxed it in an old shower tap box and for a moment, I thought she was giving me some plumbing for my birthday, which would have sucked lol! Then my uncle gave me Star Fox and Super Mario World that same day! That was great! Happy 25th Super Nintendo, thanks for the magic!

When the SNES first came out my uncle would rent one from the video store and bring it over along with U.N. Squadron, Captain America and Street Fighter II. Later he got his own and eventually passed it on to me as a Christmas gift. So many great games, so many great memories.

  • @what9681
    @what9681 8 лет назад +8

The SNES has the greatest 12-month launch game lineup in video game history and I don't see it ever being topped ever again, not even close. F-Zero, Super Mario World, Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Pilotwings, U.N. Squadron, A Link to the Past, Actraiser, Street Fighter II, Super Castlevania IV, Mystical Ninja, Final Fantasy II (IV), Contra III, Super R-Type, the list goes on and on, i mean HOLY FUCK! 1991/1992 were truly magical years, and that's not including all of the awesome games that were coming out for the Genesis those same years also.

Yeah, Mode 7 really seemed to be used less and less with each year that passed in the SNES's life. Seemed like in the first year of the SNES that every single game had at least one Mode 7 graphical effect lol.

      RetroGamerAaron
Final Fight was okay but hugely disappointing at the same time since it didn't have 2-player support, didn't have Guy (my favorite character), limited the number of enemies on-screen to 3 and was also missing Rolento's factory stage. I actually found Rival Turf to be a way more fun game since it had 2-player support despite being a total rip-off lol.
Streets of Rage 2 was everything I wanted a console version of Final Fight to be, and in fact I loved (and still love) SoR2 more than any other console beat'em up, it's the best ever of it's genre still to this day imo. Any time I play the game I can't stop until i either get a game over or beat it lol.

I remember reading the article that you posted pics from. Also remember being 'super' excited about Final Fight coming out and seeing those pictures in nintendo power. I used to play it all the time at a nearby arcade, and couldn't believe I'd finally be able to play it at home. Saved my money and bought it at Sears and love it to this day, with a Super Mario World still being my favorite Mario game.

I know how you felt about the surprise with your parents saying yes to buying your something unexpected.
My parents were the exact same they never really liked me playing video games when I was younger especially violent games but when I was 12 the day call of duty black ops came out (6years ago and I know it's not exactly a Super Nintendo but it was huge for me) I came home from school and had the exact same chat with my Mam and I have honesty never been happier to buy a game in my life and it was on the release day aswell!!!
The icing on the cake was when I went into the store and saw all my friends from school getting the game and they had all teased me about not getting the game and I was close to tears and I literally thought I was the shit...parents they can be great when they want to
Ps thanks very much for all your great content on a website filled with people with such pessimistic views I was thrilled to find somebody with happy in their name!!!Thank you very much

    Great story John.
I remember my dad coming to pick me up in the city when I was a kid. I lived with my grandmother and he asked me where he could get a Super Nintendo. I was so excited, so I told him that Canadian Tire was selling them and we went there... as I was heading out towards the checkout with him, I realized that he was buying only one and it was for my little brother. It broke my heart and he must have realized that I was upset, so asked me to go and pick up one for myself from the aisle. I was very happy at that point.
He dropped me off at my grandmothers and then had to do some grocery shopping before heading back to the country that evening. That afternoon I was playing Super Mario World. My little brother called from out in the country and asked if dad had bought the Super Nintendo, I told him yes he did and that I was playing it. He started crying on the other end, confused I explained to him that he had bought two, one for him and another for me. That didn't help... he wanted to be the first or only one to have played it...
Anyway, that's my memory of getting the Super Nintendo from my dad.

I loved my NES but I desperately wanted to play Super Mario World. So my Grandmother, bless her soul, told me if I did chores around the house she would give me $1 a day. After about 6 months, I didn't quite have enough but she went ahead and got it for me anyway - she's just always been a sweetheart like that. It was amazing - especially when I finally got Super Mario World for Christmas soon after. Probably my favorite system of all time!

OMG I had so many memories with this console too... SMW being my first game I ever played, then I played some others like Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Super Mario Kart. Then when I got a bit older I expanded my collection, MMX, Contra III, Gradius III, Castlevania IV, Fire Power 2000, DKC, etc. Like I could go on, and I love these games so much that I will play them for hours, and NEVER get tired of them. Like I always have a hard time picking out which SNES game I wanna play. And this system has most of my all-time favorite games on it. I'll be playing some of them, and like that music will take me back. And that's why it'll forever be my favorite system.

My Mother did the same for me with NES Zelda. I only got games on my b-day or Christmas - but I randomly saw Zelda sitting in a display case at Zellers one day and asked her if I could have it (fulling expecting a "no, we can't afford it"), and she surprised me by buying it on the spot. That memory sticks with me the same way the SNES does for John. It made my summer that year.

I don't know i all ways thought the snes look like a launch box lol !! When i wanted one again i opted instead to import a sfc and bought a everdrive for it.Given how it's second hand market is out of control now.Still, snes was when nintendo had the most for it's library of games.

I always liked the design as well. One gaming mag from back then praised it for being ahead of its time. I wish I still had it. There was a feature looking at all of the consoles that had launched up to some point in the mid ninties. I remember it had a cool little drawing of helmet-less Samus representing the section on the SNES. If only I hadn't thrown away virtually all of my gaming mags.

To each it's own BUT what about the Exclusives? do you prefer the North American only games or the Japanese only games?

Awesome system! Thanks for sharing your memories, Johnny!
Here in Portugal, Sega was king! All my friends had Master Systems and, later, Mega Drives (Genesis)! Me included! ;)
    Cheers!

Mystic Quest was an amazing game to play when I was 18. I'd never played anything like it before, it was so immersive. I'd only played 8bit computers before so the transformation was amazing.

You mention your parents would normally wait till christmas, for the Dreamcast was a shared christmas present between me and my brother collectively (ie. from our parents, grandparents etc).
I remember the following year when I got Shenmue, just for me.

Hi Johnny, i had the same broken shoulder buttons on my snes controllers. I took them appart and applied some ABS cement (it's used for irrigation pipe) between the button and the hinge in attaches to. Try it out, works like a charm

when the snes came out I wasn't even born yet, but it was my first console (got it when I was 4). My country used to be a little late, so while the rest of the world had the n64, I had the snes and I'm actually glad for it. Best console ever.

I swear I remember buying the Super Nintendo. I have to day though the 16 bit era was one of the best points in video game history to me. Such great RPGs, great games, great graphics and music. Loved all 3 systems, Turbo, Genesis, and Snes. I still have my original turbo, but i would need to find everything for it to get it to work.

I remember when I got my SNES! I had been reading the ads in the magazines for Final Fight, which was my current favorite arcade game. I was BLOWN AWAY by how close to the arcade version it looked. I started selling off my old NES games and hardware (regret that now) to be able to save enough to buy a Super Nintendo. I was at about halfway there, then one Sunday when my Dad brought me back home from our weekend visitation, my Mom and Step-Dad had went out and payed for what I lacked! They already had it hooked up to the little 13 inch tv in my room. When I walked in my room I about flipped out with excitement! lol

I was around for the Super Nintendo. In fact I remember when my parents got one for my family. It was a little bit later for us, because we didn't get one until 1993 or 1994 after we'd moved out of the city to the countryside. In fact I remember watching my mom play Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 in Super Mario All-Stars in the living room of our small two story, three bedroom/one bathroom log cabin. And then subsequently we got a lot of games second hand as we'd buy them from Rogers Video when they were finished with them (as in they weren't renting out Super Nintendo games anymore because the N64 was released and they were now renting N64 games).

Man the excitement when I got my SNES for Christmas!!! Was amazing times the best times! Now.....I feel so old and nothing is exciting anymore.....Chrono Trigger, Ogre Battle, Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy 3 (still got the box somewhere) The list could go on and on. Best days of gaming IMO.
