  • This is a test to find best choke tube constriction for APEX TSS Waterfowl hunting ammo. In this review I tested Carlson's choke tubes and Muller choke tubes at 40 yards to see how each pattern. I used the following choke tubes: modified, full, extra full, decoy, passing, UFO. This is high performance APEX #9 shot tungsten traveling at 1550 fps in a 3" shell. It is ideal for hunting ducks, geese, pheasants, and much more at long range. I was very surprised with the test results.

    In this experiment I used my Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl shotgun with its 28" barrel. I did the test at a certified range using quality eye and ear protection. The choke tube giving the best pattern density was not what I expected. Also the recoil was not too high. APEX provided the shells tested in this video at my request, and Carlson's and Muller provided the chokes. Thanks to them for their support. #waterfowlhunting #duckhunting #goosehunting

      Thanks! One of my first thoughts was actually using this as a turkey load, since its a bit cheaper. But the patterning of the true turkey shells is drastically better. Though this added velocity is nice. I wouldn't be opposed to using them in a pinch. But the tighter the choke the worse they seem to pattern, so that approach has limits.

    I shot this ammo last season at ducks and Canadians and it performed flawlessly! We were set up on a predominantly duck pond one morning and it actually ended up being more geese than ducks. I only had the TSS #9's and it did the job on those geese! I was worried at first but after the first group it was clear that a goose at 30 yards had no chance against #9's! I shot a factory modified choke for most of the season. One interesting thing I noticed when cleaning ducks was there was complete pass through with the pellets! I hardly ever found pellets while cleaning birds. This stuff is absolutely crazy at what it can do. I also used it squirrel hunting and it preformed just as good! just another plus is being able to use TSS squirrel hunting on public lands where non toxic shot is required. Shooting squirrels with steel is almost useless but the TSS really opened up my abilities in the woods! If you can afford to buy some to try it out, definitely do so.

    I saw tss shells in action goose hunting last year. Had a young hunter in the blind shooting tss (reloaded 8’s) 20 ga. Had a flock of 4 geese work in and 3 of us jumped up knocked 3 down and as the last bird was flying away I was thinking well he shouldn’t have gotten away. Kid fired his last shot and dropped the goose stone dead at approximately 80 yards. I was more than impressed.

    Another excellent presentation. To save money and lessen the beating on your shoulder, have you ever thought about putting the ballistic gel behind the paper target so that you can test the pattern and penetration at the same time? Not having done this myself, I have no idea if it would actually work, but I thought I’d bring it up. Thanks again, god bless, and go get ‘em on the high plains!

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  Год назад +1

      Thanks so much! I have thought about it, and there are two issues. First, the paper would retard penetration and un-even amount due to the folding, tape, and metal lattice inside. And second, I would get little bits of paper and cardboard propelled into the ballistics gel and it would be ruined much faster. I could put the pellets on the gel, no problem. But the other issues are prohibitive. Thanks for the thoughts though!

      I don't think I could give any useful description of the inside of the choke tubes. I will say the quality of the metal is very nice. Interestingly, the Carlson's all patterned almost the same. The Muller gives you alot of diversity.

    • @jacobfarley824
      @jacobfarley824 7 месяцев назад

      I cant tell you the difference on diameters. I can only say Muller deigned his chokes to give a more consistent pattern out to certain ranges with his chokes ( better spread with less holes in pattern). Carlsons is an extremely nice patterning tight choke.

    I was just thinking about titanium bird shot or Waterfowll shot .what if somebody used titanium pellets and got the speed up to around 2000 plus feet per second for a waterfall load

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  11 месяцев назад +1

      So actually titanium has a very light density, half the density of steel. Which would make it one of the worst possible materials for a projectile. It is very strong but it is light, which is why it's used in jets. It's a good idea, but it's on the wrong side of the density scale.

    I recently bought into the internet hype surrounding Muller chokes and bought a 12ga passing for my Benelli SBE 1 with the forcing cone lengthened at angle-port when Rob Roberts was running the place,also fitted with a 720 ported choke tube ive shot for 25 years,but thought id see what all the hooplah was about....and...to be polite i was throughly unimpressed..I ran 2 diffent 3in loads,and 2 differnt 2 3/4 loads thru it and my patterns all look like yours (horrible) as a matter of fact its probably the worst choke tube that has touched the barrel of any of my guns in over 30 years..What a total flop. I decided to put my own choke back in and ran the same series just to see if it was me or something else becasue how could it be that they were so horrible..it had to be something else....and yup..they smoked the Muller in all 4 loads..by at least 2x the amount of pellets and no giant gaping holes in my patern..I should have known better.if it sounds too good to be true it usually is,and in this case it is

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  11 месяцев назад +1

      Well, that's a sad story. What I can tell you is that with this ammo, the Muller was not impressive, unless you were trying to get the pattern to open more at close range. But with Bismuth, it's the best performing choke of any I've tested.
