Consider the effect of triggering the yawning reflex on the developing foetus early in the pregnancy! A mechanism powerful enough to disrupt the fragile tissues of the lip and palate. I postulate that tiredness and exhaustion in the expectant mother could precipitate yawning not only in herself but in her unborn.
The idea is counter intuitive so be careful not to dismiss it as fanciful. Later in the pregnancy, as the baby grows, invoking the yawning mechanism helps the mouth and tongue differentiate thus avoiding a 'short tongue' condition in the newborn.

What is the prevalence of these conditions? Are surgeries to fix the conditions pretty much always successful?
