    The “no one cares about your high school” is so so real. I was in a sophomore/freshmen interdisciplinary course. It was honors. My sophomore year one freshmen girl’s introductory fun fact about herself was taking a few AP courses in high school. I remember looking to my left and right and seeing every single sophomore want to disassociate into the next dimension. It’s a honors interdisciplinary course you had to write an essay to get into. EVERY person there took AP/IB and had stellar ACT scores and if they didn’t it was because their school was too poor for such programs and they still had excellent scores, so either way you look like a bit of a tool for bringing it up. Your high school academic achievements do no matter once you’re in college. For the record, my fun fact was that I’ve “beaten Skyrim”, as in done every quest+got all the achievements until there was only repeatable quests. And my professor thought that was at least funny. One guy’s fun fact was his ability to fold a t shirt in 10 seconds and he brought a t shirt to DEMONSTRATE. That’s memorable!

      @jtg42n42q iuq3irqn nah. I've had a professor that genuinely took pride in watching people fail. He gave exam questions that he knew most of the class wouldn't be able to answer, simply because it was above our knowledge or skill level. I was a straight A student in my major, and I struggled regularly in that class (also part of my major). I rarely blame a professor for the failures of the students, but I've never felt a professor was actively working against the students like this guy was.

    • @scottbecker4367
      @scottbecker4367 3 года назад +44

      @jtg42n42q iuq3irqn a good grade in those classes doesn't mean much if you don't learn anything. Again, the professor was teaching way above our skill level on purpose. Not slightly above our skill level. Then I would take responsibility for not knowing the material.

      @scottbecker4367 3 года назад +25

      @jtg42n42q iuq3irqn don't have access to them. Still went and got my biochemistry degree. The class I'm referring to was undergraduate physical chemistry, and it was taught with problems graduate level physical chemists would be attempting. Again, well above our level and very little to do with biochemistry.

This will depend on whether or not the professor uses plus/minus for the letter grades.

    Do. Not. Procrastinate. Freshman year my intro to health professor gave an assignment where we would have to write jounal entries for one month about one page each double spaced. It sounded easy enough (just write some bs about what foods I ate and what activities I did that were active) naive freshman me thought I could do it in one day like I used to do with my projects in HS. I realized 1/3 of the way through that I was in way over my head and I ended up staying up for the whole 24 hours just so I could get a B- on the project. That's an extreme example and I've learned my lesson from that one time. Seriously, guys, your professors assign work to you in advance so you'll have enough time to do it, use that to your advantage.

      I know this comment is three years old, but I find that insane that you had to do that in college because I had to do that basically, only in my freshmen year of high school. I was in a GHP class and we did a journal prompt everyday for 74 days, (and then do a second one for the next semester) and it was for my English. Well I did some procrastinating... But in the end I maybe forgot one or two cause I didn't number them. But the only catch is they all HAVE to be five sentences unless other is specified, soo uhhh yeah I ended up getting a 0% on it even though 95% of it was done 😢 but I was able to do the rest for a 50%... let's just say I did not make that same mistake for the second one, but I did procrastinate still 💀

One of my English professors (now a good professional friend of mine) casually swore sometimes, and really, you can't discuss certain books without cussing at least a few times. However, I never swore with my art professor because he was a very soft spoken, mild mannered man and I didn't think he'd take as well to it.

Shake hands with the person sitting next to you in class. Compliment the person in front of you on the bus on their Rick and Morty pin (or whatever). If you recognize someone when you’re in the dining hall, sit with them. Eating in front of people scares me and I still do this. Here's my advice
    1. Pace yourself. You're free!! Teachers won't hold your hand for everything anymore. Some people find this concept incredibly liberating, others need some time to adjust; et yourself into a comfortable pace and once you find it go ahead.
    2. Get the idea of natural smarts out of your mind. You need to try!!! If you dont get it the first time, try until you do. You're paying for the chance to learn. Don't let others intimidate you. Be the best person you can be and dont base your success after others. You're not competing for the first spot in your school, you're trying to learn and get a degree.
    3. Everyone learns differently, if one method doesnt work for you, try another one. Theres different types of learning and you need to find one that best suits you and your time.
    4. Your syllabi Are your guides to your success or failure of a class. Study them and learn what you need to pass.
    Hope this helps someone!! Good luck !!!

On the other, you might get people more interested in talking about everything except schoolwork until the "study session" becomes just another group hangout

      @hidansektas 3 года назад +2

      @@Amber-ql9fs i can only give you general advice so here it goes. You cant really prepare with trying to prepare for classes because it wont be like anything you have in high school (but depends on a country, here we have different types of high school where you learn basics of law, medicine, something more tehnical that will help you if you enrolled in something like engineering, and then also high schools like in america more or less which i went to unfortunately but i digress). Get used to studying and concentrating and procrastinating less. Legit my high school was brutal and we had so much to study that i had no issue adapting to studying at uni even though people from other high schools had a hard time (people from my high school type generally do better because we did good on entrance exams for high school and its only smart-ish in those). Get used to having so much stuff to do at once and organising everything. Side note and maybe most important - you dont have to pass all your exams at once, the most important thing is to learn it and memorise whst you learned because you need to actually apply that knowledge some day. Seriously you'll do good the key is organising and knowing to study correctly and not wasting time. Good luck and have fun the rest of your high school as well

    The whole thing with approachable teachers is so true.
    My middle school teachers were really tough, and one of them constantly talked about how easy we have it and high school was going to be much worse. That class was really difficult so I panicked. Got to high school and those teachers, especially junior and senior year, were a lot more cool and fun to talk to. Some of those teachers then talked about how college is so much harder and nothing like high school. Less scared by that point, but whatever. Community College, those teachers were so nice, and one of them specifically helped me to become more social. Then I moved on to a small university. Those are the friendliest, most approachable teachers, even two teachers I've been working with in coding (I'm a digital art student) a project were very friendly and helpful, we meet often and I plan to sit in on one of those classes to learn more code even after I graduate. Those teachers at my Uni are so helpful and nice. My love for learning only went up, and it reflects from the teachers.

    Some general freshman advice for youse:
    1. RATE MY PROFESSORS WILL LITERALLY SAVE YOUR LIFE
    2. If you're on a relatively big campus, look up how far away your classes are in relation to each other. If your classes are back-to-back, they're 15 minutes apart, you have 10 minutes to get there, and you're walking, either invest in a bike/scooter or choose a different class that's closer or starts later.
    3. If you live in the dorms, PLEASE, for the love of all that's good, follow the rules set by your RA. Don't get mad at us when you're cited for having alcohol in the room when we explicitly told you that you can't have it. Also, just go to the stinking floor meetings and the programs if you're able to. That will make your RA happy and they may be more lenient with you as a result.
    4. TAs can make or break your experience in a class. I happened to get a chill TA in my history class and he graded pretty leniently, but my friend in that same class had a much more strict TA.
    5. You won't be in class for as long as you were in high school, but that's no reason to not put in effort. The classes and exams are often much harder and you'll actually need to study for them. Also, you'll have more free time, but that will go towards your extracurriculars. Basically, you may be very busy despite barely being in class.
    6. EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND!!!
    Tis a lot, but good luck, have fun, and relax! You got this!

    During Orientation/first week of college, try attending as many different classes in your stream as you can. Sometimes the modules you register for aren't always as interesting as you thought and there will probably be that one random class that you will instantly fall in love with and you can switch modules before it's too late and you're stuck with modules that make you hate college. During my first year I had these 2 classes that I absolutely despised and later realized(by attending my friend's lectures) that I could have exchanged them for classes that didn't make me want to shove pencils in my ears.
    This also applies for modules with different lecturers.

I have friends in the same situation who want to go to law school now but have low GPAs because of freshman year. JUST STUDY and show up to every class!!! Your future self will thank you.

    Remember that your professors are human. Now more than ever, they will expect you to understand that they are also human adults with lives, children, other jobs, etc. Don't expect your professor to email you on a Saturday at 2AM, give them time and don't put it off. Show them some kindness and don't be afraid to connect with them if they're that type of person. I developed a close relationship with my art professor and we've been talking through the entire pandemic even though I'm currently not in school. He is one of my favorite people, a genuinely kind man, and has inspired so much good in my life. None of that would have happened if I didn't recognize him as being a regular person with a life.

    Most schools have a library. If you are like me, and get easily distracted and start playing around on your personal computer when you get frustrated with your work if you do your work at home
    Pack some food
    go to the library
    for the love of god don't leave until you are finished with your work.
    I've found it to be much more productive to do your work at the library. You're pretty much forcing yourself to sit there and work out how to move forward. Otherwise, you may find it is 10 PM, you messed around most of the day, and you still have about 6 hours worth of work you need to get through.
    on that note, I hear some people get away with this but for most: if you aren't in a fluff major, don't procrastinate. this isn't high school and you will regret it.
    Also, don't forget to go out and relieve stress from time to time. Go for a walk or just do something you like. Seriously committing to doing well in college can build up stress and it will mess you up if you don't relieve that stress from time to time.
    Sleep is important and losing it can have a cascading effect on your productivity, health, and happiness.
    EDIT: The comment the person made about taking knowledge from college library databases while you are a student is highly underrated advice. Just the knowledge relevant to your major can be a couple thousand dollars and more after you lose your student status and I wish I had done it more.

    what i still see with a bunch of ppl is that they downplay the importance of HOW to study for an exam. knew some people used to who barely study for exams in high school and still got an A’s but absolutely struggled with exams in college. the truth was that they never knew how to study for tests and are currently trying to pick up the pieces the hard way. the energy is largely different and you should study the material because you need to understand it-do NOT just memorize stuff.
    also: STUDY GUIDES! many of your professorship may give out study guides before the test: DO IT DO IT DO IT! write, type, draw all over it if you can. yes you can also share the study guide via google doc to the class and ask for student contributions. you would be surprised with how many ideas and interpretations students can collectively have about certain materials.

    ITS OKAY IF YOU NEED TO DROP A CLASS!!! You're not a failure for realizing that a class might be too much for you at the time you're taking it. Stop being so prideful and understand that its better to have a dropped class on your transcript than a D or an F.
    Also, if possible, take the classes you have the hardest time with at community college in the summer (if they're basic classes and are transferable to your university). The time frame of the classes are shorter, the classes are cheaper, and even if you don't do so well in them they only transfer a pass/fail grade, not an alphabetical grade. (It could depend on the university, but this was true for my case)

      This. I cannot stress this enough
      I once had to drop a math course because of the fact that all the work was done strictly on this website, and each class would involve the Professor just walking around the room asking people if they needed help. While the professor was extremely insightful and helpful, the site itself was a complete mess. If you got more than 2 questions wrong on a ten question assignment then it would generate 5 MORE assignments for you to do each week that was required AND counted towards your overall grade. (Which was also entirely dependent on how you performed on the website). By the second or third month of the course I had to do 25 assignments on top of 5 quizzes + homework assignments a week and I was just like, there's literally no way I'm going to be able to pass this class. I tried talking to the professor about it but there wasn't anything he could really do about the extra assignments generating & didn't take it personally when I dropped his class at all. This guy was one of the only professors who waved at me in the hallways up to the very end.

    Getting up before 8 AM isn't as simple/routine as it was before college. I found that out within the first couple of weeks of college. I had an 8 AM my first semester (Tue/Thurs) and I went from getting up around 7:05 at the start of the semester on those days to 7:45/7:50 at the end of the semester on those days (my 8 AM was in my dorm). There were some occasions where I laid in bed and nearly went back to sleep. Most of those times, I was able to wake up in time to get dressed and head to class. On one occasion, I accidentally went back to sleep and woke up and got to class after it started.
    Ultimately, I took three 8 AM courses during my time in college. For the final one, the powerpoint notes were online and because of that, I skipped on several occasions (as did most of the class; it was Physical Science btw and it was HUGE during the first day and on the day of the final). I was able to get a couple of extra hours of sleep on those occasions.

    My big piece of advice is, don't let freedom go to your head. No parents around, surrounded by peers your own age, no one to tell you to go to bed or what you should be eating, it can go to your head very easily. Staying out until 1:30 in the morning or staying up as late as you can to see how long you can last, both things I did in college, are not good ideas (my record for staying up was 5:30 AM). Of course, drinking and drugs (neither of which I did) should be avoided, especially if you're not 21, and once you are 21, please be responsible with alcohol.
