    AGATHE
    A multi-award-winning play by Angela J. Davis
    Directed by Mukul Ahmed
    17 April-4 May 2024
A plane crash takes the life of an African president and ignites a killing spree that the world will later recognize as the 1994 genocide against Tutsi people in Rwanda.
The person who was next in line for the country’s presidency - and who was, in fact, the country’s head of state for less than a day - was Agathe Uwilingiyimana, a university professor and an advocate for women and girls’ education.
A beacon for our times, Agathe’s silenced story and brave spirit is captured in this riveting play.

    Reviews of AGATHE
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️'For a play about a very sombre and serious subject, Davis’s script contains many funny lines...Agathe is a tense and effective reminder of how order can slide into chaos and why we should stand against inhumanity, even as it overwhelms us.' (The Reviews Hub)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 'Natasha Bain gives an outstanding performance...the passion of the performers and their reactions to external events and each other makes for a captivating insight into a forgotten leader' (Morning Star)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 'a powerful piece of theatre storytelling' (Red Bus Londinium LIfe)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ‘The use of lighting was on point...even made me jump...emotive and underrated acting for what they were portraying' (My Borderline Life)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 'Do yourself a favour and catch this play... You’ll thank me later.' (Breaking the Fourth Wall)
⭐️⭐️⭐️'There can be few things more inspirational and more harrowing on the London stage right now...The story of Agathe Uwilingiyimana is important, and deserves to be shared and known...[Mbaye Diagne was] An inspirational figure deserving of his own theatrical legacy, and Attoh-Woods captures the charisma and understanding of human nature which made his exploits possible.' (Salterton Arts Review)
'A play about Rwanda that has lessons for u today' (The Spectator)
'This clear, accessible story is performed by an impressive cast of five actors that never fails to hold the audience's attention...Agathe and Mbaye stand as important examples of how... people can oppose genocide and save people's lives.' (British Theatre Guide)
    'Fascinating and insightful...' (Survivors Fund)

‘This taut, moving new play is inspired by the real-life heroism of Agathe Uwilingiyimana. .
Judges commended the play’s vivid cast of characters, its multi-faceted human window on virulent social violence, and its introduction for international audiences to Agathe’s African feminist legacy.’ (Jane Chambers Award Judges Curation Notes)
‘Prescient and powerful, this play uses language confidently and accessibly. Though this is about another place and time, one cannot help but see in Davis's work, parallels to our current extremism, and the strength and courage of anyone who defies it.’ (Rachael Carnes)
‘A richly conceived, harrowing, compelling play. More than a clear portrait of a courageous woman --though it is certainly that- it creates a sense that, even in the worst of times, there can be a possibility of goodness and nobility.’ (John Minigan)
