Making A Kiwi Trellis

  • I have been working on a trellis for my parents. It is a Mother's Day gift. I just got the trellis put in place and it seems to work. The big idea with this trellis is that the kiwi plants that are going to grow on it will strengthen and support themselves at some point in the future and the trellis will rot away and disappear. Therefore, I did not want to use any metal fasteners to put the trellis together. I used metal stakes to hold the trellis down to the ground. This will keep the trellis from tipping over in the wind. It is all connected with mortise and tenants and glue. I also wanted an overall form of the trellis that would allow the kiwi plants to grow from either side and connect in the middle and form a single structure.

Kiwifruit. All one word. Originally called 'Chinese gooseberry', the New Zealand market took off in the 1980s and pushed the word 'kiwifruit'. A 'kiwi' is a bird. A 'kiwifruit' is a delightful fruit. Particularly the gold ones as they're sweeter and the skin isn't furry. BTW, nice trellis. Very cool design.

And that folks, is why you don't get a woodworker to do a construction job if you just wanted a quick, simple trellis. On the other hand, if you want a biodegradable work of art.....
For anyone interested here are some facts about the plants.
The reason you need two plants is because there is a male and a female. Hence you need at least one of each to produce fruit.
Also, world please note that it is Kiwi FRUIT. A Kiwi is a New Zealand flightless bird. The national bird.
The reason for the confusion is because people from New Zealand are also referred to as Kiwis - as a nickname. (It's not considered offensive).
Hence this fruit coming from New Zealand is called a Kiwi Fruit.
Ironically the plant originated in China but New Zealand developed that berry into the commercial fruit you know today so New Zealand gets all the credit.
