Totally resonate with the feeling to have to read a ton before starting to write. It's a form of procrastination from the fear that I have nothing to say. And then when I do finally write, I find I need different sources...
Also, I loved the tranquil music in your vlog!
I didn't fully read all of my sources for my master's thesis, but in teaching American Literature at the community college level, I realized some gaps in my thinking. We were just trying to get the thing done in graduate school, but now in preparing for my NEH project and later for the PhD, I find it more than necessary to read all the way through at least the primary sources. Reading the whole work(s) slows you down, but you get a fuller sense as well. Great video. I'm still binge watching and enjoying myself as well.
♥️♥️♥️
Your work rises up curiousity and inspiration in anybody 😊
Thank you so much 🥺
I'm also writing my dissertation right now and I have the exact feeling of needing to read everything before writing a chapter. I think the more we learn and know about a certain topic, the more careful we get because we have been practicing this for a long time. That's, in my opinion, an improved skill... or we're just procrastinating lol
Could you make a video talking about how you track sources through your reading, and looking at historiography? I’d be interested to know how you do this as a PhD candidate, and any tips and tricks you can give to undergraduate or honours history students who are starting to venture into doing this and reading texts more closely this way. Thank you!
Check out my PhD student workflow video!
Idk how you’re balancing SJM with Academic Texts. I typed my Masters Dissertation on my phone and called it a day.
I lead a chaotic existence lol
Maybe a tip to combat the feeling that you have nothing to write. I have a small notebook which is sort of a reading diary. Every time I finish some reading, I write the date and three or four sentences about what this text is about and how this piece of text would help my research. The writings don't have to be shakespeare, they have to be raw, blunt, written in a way that they make you honest with yourself.
Writing up does not mean doing all the writing in the end after all the readings, it is more like writing the 'cement' between the writings that you have done alongside your readings, if it all makes any sense. Anyway, you do what is the best for you, Kaelyn. I believe in you! Come on, you can do it! I root for you!
This is great advice and something I do already in my research practice 🥰 thank you!

Technology question. Did you get your computer from US and then had it sent to UK, or did you get it from the UK? I wonder because the keyboards are different and I wonder if that has affected your writing.
I’ve bought all my computers from the states
8:49 I promise it wasn’t me (lol jk)
haha it wasn't
