      Did you learn this?
      Joseph Smith said Dec 16, 1838, "Such characters as McLellin, John Witmer, David Witmer, Oliver Cowdry, and Martin Harris are too mean to mention; and we had liked to have forgotten them." History of the Church, Vol 3, p232
      Brigham Young said, "Some of the Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, who handled the plates and conversed with the angels of God, were afterwards left to doubt and to disbelieve that they had ever seen an angel." (Journal of Discourses, Vol 7, page 164, 1859, Brigham Young.)
      All three witnesses were eventually excommunicated from the Mormon church.
      Two of the three witnesses who were excommunicated from the Mormon church later returned to the church after denying their testimony. Imagine if any one of the apostles denied their witness that Jesus rose from the dead, were kicked out of the early church, then returned again. Their testimony would be of no value. Remember that all three denied the Mormon faith at one point, and one never came back to the Mormon church going to his grave denying his testimony, yet Mormons still use his testimony for the book of Mormon. In fact, David Whitmer never returned to the LDS church that he was a witness for, but joined splinter groups that denied the original LDS church he was first a member of."

    This failed to mention that the mob persecuting Joseph, was Joseph's money digging friend's that he had promised them for years he would share the gold plates with them.
    But I do give partial brownie points for showing the hat that Joseph translated out of. Not full points cause they show the plates being in the same room.

    • @WasatchWind
      @WasatchWind 3 года назад +5

      Ah, so that's apparent why the stupid treasure hunting nonsense comes up?
      I'm afraid you'll need to look at the historical record my friend, as even secular historians would disagree with you.
      In my study of the life of Joseph Smith, I've researched the time he spent working for Josiah Stowell. Josiah had heard rumor that there was an abandoned cache of Spanish silver buried in the area.
      So, they went digging for it. I don't really find what is objectionable about this.
      In his own accounts, Joseph reported that after receiving instruction from God to leave the company of those trying to find the supposed treasure, he did so. This was not anything to do with the morality of the treasure seeking, but the morality of the men around Joseph doing the work.
      I believe it was Josiah's nephew or something that took Joseph to court after this, claiming that Joseph had swindled his Josiah somehow, but the court found Joseph innocent after Josiah vouched for Joseph's integrity.
      The persecution Joseph and the members of the church he founded faced was due primarily to -
      A - they were a strange new church that went against commonly held beliefs
      B - they gathered in large groups, and often voted together, swaying elections,
      C - when the church settled in Missouri, some members were staunch abolitionists, which riled the anger of the southern slave owners,
      and D - the church retaliating against their persecution.
      I do no know what video or website you got that erroneous take from, but I bet Wikipedia would give you a much better view of the events.
      In the persecution Joseph faced, he and other church members were tarred and feathered. That night, because the mob dragged him into the cold, letting the chill in his home, his young sick child died. He and his wife Emma lost many children.
      In this mob violence, many innocent men, women, and children were murdered enthusiastically in massacre in forced removal from Missouri.
      So when you come here and tell me that my ancestors were abused by state run militias, all because Joseph backed out on some deal that never happened, you are spitting on their graves.

      @@WasatchWind The mob that you are referring to are the mobs that came later on in church history. back during the translation of the Book of Mormon the church hadn't been formed yet and Joseph and Oliver Cowdery were the only members.
      Joseph's Role with Josiah Stowell wasn't as just some laborer with a shovel. Joseph told Josiah that he could find the Spanish mine and other treasures for them using the same stone that he used to translate the Book of Mormon.
      here is a 35 page document that sites it's sources, and if you read it you'll understand why historians in and out of the Church don't disagree with what I just said.
      www.dialoguejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/sbi/articles/Dialogue_V27N03_211.pdf
      the mob trying to get the plates from from Joseph included Josiah Stowell, Samuel Lawrence and the rest of the money digging crew.
      in 1825 Joseph received revelation that Samuel Lawrence was the person he needed to bring with him to successfully get the plates. (see the affidavit of Willard Chase) that mob was people that Joseph had worked with for three years, and Joseph was the leading folk magic seer. These people thought that Joseph owed them the plates.
      back when I was on my mission what was anti mormon information is now church history. I am not spitting on the grave of your ancestors by learning more about history that the church tried to hide.
      my ancestors came across the planes in the willy hand cart company and I am grateful for their sacrifice that lead to my life growing up in the church. I wish that the church was true and I don't hate the Church, I just don't like the manipulation of the facts to make the church look true.

    • @WasatchWind
      @WasatchWind 3 года назад +1

      @@jimmyhylton9957 From what I see, it appears that your information might be correct. I don't really see why it would be considered a mark against Joseph that some people thought he had wronged them.
      I apologize for my anger in my prior comment, something tends to come out when something you care about is challenged - it is hard though to get across calm tone in an online space.
      I do not think necessarily, at least at this time, that church leaders are maliciously obscuring or manipulating information.
      The church is making strong efforts to educate its members on church history, especially the more controversial aspects. In this way, when I have listened to, or read secular histories of the church, I now see much more clearly how to interpret what I am hearing, and placing it in context.
      What I'll note however, is that the church's purpose is not to endlessly squabble about it's history, but grow into a more perfect organization that is capable of preparing the living and the dead for the second coming.
      I am not sure as to your feelings on the church at this time, but if the church is correct, it is obvious that the devil would do everything in his power to deter it. He cannot destroy the church, but he can lead away individuals, and that is often his focus.
      On my mission in Florida, I encountered a great deal of anti. It was horrific. There were people that really hated us. They treated church members as less than human.
      I began to obsess over fighting this, and digging into their arguments. On one hand, it educated me about church history and doctrine. On the other hand, it always made me angry, and took away any positivity I felt while reading the scriptures.
      As soon as I withdrew from this obsession, I felt a noticeable difference in my mood.
      I do not know your current temprement towards the church friend, but I'd suggest maybe trying this if you feel so inclined. I know it has helped me.

My question is: why don’t they just do it? Not “try”. It’s just too much to be accountable for them, there is a lot. It’s not easy for them to say “oh, oops, it was a mistake.” They can’t own up to it. The fact that you spent two years apparently teaching a manipulated truth. "Needing to gain a witness from god" about the BoM's truthfulness already presumes the truthfulness of the BoM because this instruction is found _in_ the BoM. If the BoM is _not_ true, then you don't need to follow any instruction from the book. And it wouldn't matter what you believe you got from following the instructions, it couldn't be what you think it is. So the veracity of the book has to be proven _first_ in order to take the contents _within_ the book seriously.
    This is begging the question. It's circular reasoning.

    • @lineupon
      @lineupon  3 года назад

      Actually if you read Moroni 10:3-5 it says to ask if it is NOT true. Why NOT? Most likely that if you've been a sincere seeker of the spirit of God, you will already know. So it's saying, how can you feel it isn't true. I invite you to sincerely consider that maybe it really is from God. For every doubt someone can ask you to explain each miracle behind the book. But regardless faith isn't based on doubts or miracles, it's based on testing the doctrine and truth. The doctrine is pure and you will feel it. God bless you as you seek His will in your life.

    • @ThomasJDavis
      @ThomasJDavis 3 года назад

      @@lineupon Your argument misses my point. It's the "read and pray" method. It doesn't matter whether you're asking a god if the BoM is true or asking a god if its false, you're praying. You're following the method. So you're presuming that the method is reliable and that the contents of the BoM should be taken seriously.
      The method also presumes that there is a god who would answer the prayer in the first place. If someone follows this method, how would they be able to tell the difference between an actual genuine answer in the affirmative from an actually existing god and merely _thinking_ that they got an answer from a god who doesn't actually exist? What justifies the former scenario?
      As far as explaining each alleged miracle behind the book, or giving a secular explanation for a claim from a historical account, that is a secondary issue. If the contents of the book are wrong then it doesn't matter how the book came to be. It couldn't be what it claims to be. Besides, giving a secular accounting is ultimately shifting the burden of proof off those making the actual claims and onto those who don't believe those claims.
      We don't get to simply assume guilt until proven innocent. We don't just get to start out with _asserting_ our beliefs into reality. They have to be justified in order to be true, or at minimum, the most rational conclusion.
      I'm not sure what kind of definition you're using for "faith", but "testing the truth" makes no sense to me. That's presumptuous language. It's more accurate to say "testing a claim or proposition". You don't just get to pull yourself up by your own epistemological bootstraps. That's not how knowledge works.
      All I'm saying is that the method is logically fallacious. It's built on a fallacious epistemology. And as such, CAN'T lead to knowledge. It can lead to belief, but not knowledge because the belief is not rationally justified.
