Flashcards are very helpful. I use Anki. I'm not against physical cards but Anki solves the sequencing problem. The real repetition comes from encountering the words in the real world. Flash cards can lead to a virtuous circle because it helps you get to good reading practices which reinforce all the words you have already learned and introduces new ones in context. So I like flashcards.
